Just joined, will probably bring in my sons

  1. So, howdy. I just joined the server. I went through the tutorial, and I've explored the town and store and some outposts. Now, I have a few questions to get answered before I actually go out into the world.

First: There was a *lot* of stuff to read and learn. Wow.

Second: Frontier and Wilderness are same thing? I see signs that seem to use the terms interchangeably. Maybe.

I will probably bring in my two sons (ages 10 and 14), and we'd like residences near (even next to) each other. Can this be arranged? Might also bring one or two of their friends to play with us.

What is the relationship between residences and what we may build in the Frontier. Do people use the residence as a base or just a showcase? Can I teleport between a residence and a Frontier base?

When building in the Frontier, do I need to go away from where others have built? Is there any real reason to "claim" territory? I see "ESTABLISHED" threads in the forums. What is establishment and why?

In my time exploring the town and residences and outposts, I never saw a single other person. I was kind of hoping to see people. Not crowds, but at least some people. Kind of looks like a ghost server. My residence is on SM4.

I haven't explored outside the outposts, yet, but looking out at the distance, it looks like a lot of "trash structures" around -- incomplete stuff, random one-block towers, etc. (I'm not complaining or insulting, just observing.) I want to build in a "fresh" area, but I don't want to be so far separate that I never seen anyone or anything someone else has built. How far out do I need to plan to travel to reach an undeveloped but not lonely area?

My previous experience with a multi-player server was a PVP/raiding server, (can't remember the name), that no longer exists. Although it was PVP/raiding, and the best defense for yourself and your base was to stay hidden and unseen, at least in the spawn area there were always at least a dozen folks to be seen. And we occasionally crossed paths with one or two raiders out in the world. Here, I want to play out in the open, (see and be seen), but the spawn and common places seem vacant. What's up with that?

    Thanks,
    Bullgrit
  2. P.S. Also, my residence is on the border of two different biomes -- desert and hills -- so the grass is brown on one side, green on the other, (cut diagonal across the residence). Is there a way to change the biome to one? (Preferably green grass.)

    Thanks,
    Bullgrit
  3. An abridged version would be nice, wouldn't it?

Frontier: Mainly a place to build a wilderness base and explore. Wilderness and Frontier are interchangeable.
Wastelands: A place meant for gathering resources. This is much smaller than the Frontier.

You will need to find two adjacent residences, but it is possible. /res unclaim to unclaim the current residence and then /res claim whilst standing on another to claim it.
Note: Unclaiming a residence will remove everything on it.

Residences are used as anything you want: storage, shop, mansion, art, base, or even a showcase.
You cannot teleport directly from your Residence to your Frontier base yet. However, you can make a rail system that leads close to one of the outposts and once you are close enough, /town will bring you back.

Establishment: Basically, you own the land you are on officially.
You can unofficially own land anywhere you want, but not in anybody else's established territory (unless they allow you).

The actual town is HUGE! With a maximum of 40 players, it is rare to find somebody walking around. You can use /v playername is visit somebody though.

If you want that kind of area, you should join somebody's outpost. It is wise to venture far out with some friends to stay away from griefers that can join the server.
The reason for the wilderness being ugly nearby is because people used it to mine/gather resources before the Wastelands were announced. The Frontier was never reset to fix the damages.

Not everybody plays in the wilderness. It is rare to find somebody in the wilderness :/

Edit: Made it nicer. You should read the wiki!

  5. Frontier and Wilderness are same thing? I see signs that seem to use the terms interchangeably. Maybe.
Frontier and Wilderness are different. The Frontier is never reset, this is where you build towns and farms. The Wastelands is a world that gets reset every once in a while (and when there is a new update), it is purely for resource gathering.

What is the relationship between residences and what we may build in the Frontier. Do people use the residence as a base or just a showcase? Can I teleport between a residence and a Frontier base?
Residences are in town. You may build shops here and other stuff! You can do ANYTHING you want with your residence. No teleporting outside of town, only moderators can teleport outside of town and they have strict rules to when they can teleport.

When building in the Frontier, do I need to go away from where others have built? Is there any real reason to "claim" territory? I see "ESTABLISHED" threads in the forums. What is establishment and why?
It is smart to go away from where others have built. I believe you must be (500?) blocks from another outpost in order to ESTABLISH a base. An establishment is so that staff know where your base is, and what it is so they can help if Griefing occurs (correct me if im wrong felloe EMC peoples).

In my time exploring the town and residences and outposts, I never saw a single other person. I was kind of hoping to see people. Not crowds, but at least some people. Kind of looks like a ghost server. My residence is on SM4.
In the towns, they are heavily populated. Most people keep to themselves and build on their plot. The outposts you visited might be abandoned or just not heavily populated. Definitely not a ghost server. It could be that you are on SMP4, alot of people use SMP4 as an afk farm server. If you want to be around tons of people alot, I would suggest looking on other servers.

You cant find a fresh area that is active and pretty unless you join an outpost. Many players are scared of griefers so we go hundreds of thousands of blocks away to prevent that.

My previous experience with a multi-player server was a PVP/raiding server, (can't remember the name), that no longer exists. Although it was PVP/raiding, and the best defense for yourself and your base was to stay hidden and unseen, at least in the spawn area there were always at least a dozen folks to be seen. As I stated before, players are scared of griefers. I would look into joining an outpost where you are near players. Maybe look into it.

Give EMC a while, it is really fun :) Hope you stay and have fun here! EDIT: got ninjad by Sky....

  7. Welcome!

3+ years of stuff... better get reading xD

Older members such as myself, will use Wilderness (Also refered to say [the] Wild) but newer members use Frontier. The Wild got renamed to the Frontier a while back.

You'd have to try and find the reses next to each other. The town has/is expanded/expanding, so you may have a chance.

You cannot teleport anywhere in the Wild or Wastelands. A residence is for keeping stuff safe and locked up, while a wild base is for joining together to form a town.

This is just setting the place as an outpost. It gives the owner some powers and things, but not essential to smaller scale buildings.

The town is massive. You'll see people every now and then. Also, we're on the same server! Yay! SMP4 buddies!!

Quite far... use the nether to go far fast, . If you want to join my outpost you're free to!

The wild isn't used by everyone. Many people have already established their outpost. PvP and raiding aren't allowed on EMC, but I won't deny, it does happen from time to time, but the mods do an amazing job is catching the criminal.

If you have any other questions, just reply or shoot me a PM :)

  9. If you want to find two residences next to each other, I suggest using the live map. It is under servers. It highlights open residences, so you can look for two near/next to each other.
  10. If you cant find OPEN ones but you can find a couple derelict residences (to see if it is derelict do /res info on the res) it costs 5000r per residence but then you can forceclaim them.
  11. Welcome, hope you enjoy your stay :D

  13. The answers:

Frontier and Wilderness are same thing? I see signs that seem to use the terms interchangeably. Maybe. Yep, they're exactly the same. The wild was the old term for the frontier.

I will probably bring in my two sons (ages 10 and 14), and we'd like residences near (even next to) each other. Can this be arranged? Might also bring one or two of their friends to play with us. It can, you just need to find a derelict residence next to yours. Check if it's derelict with /res info. Then, /res forceclaim if it is. It costs 5k and you'll need to unclaim your first one before, though.

What is the relationship between residences and what we may build in the Frontier. Do people use the residence as a base or just a showcase? Can I teleport between a residence and a Frontier base? You can build in either the frontier or the wastelands. You can't teleport to and from your base, so you'll have to run all the way back and forth. I'd recommend using the nether for faster travel, though.

When building in the Frontier, do I need to go away from where others have built? Is there any real reason to "claim" territory? I see "ESTABLISHED" threads in the forums. What is establishment and why? In the future, there will be the ability to claim land with Dragon Eggs and Tokens. The other, more current benefit to establishing is so you can establish a set of rules and "own" the land. More on claiming here. Dragon Tombs info here and Token info here.

In my time exploring the town and residences and outposts, I never saw a single other person. I was kind of hoping to see people. Not crowds, but at least some people. Kind of looks like a ghost server. My residence is on SM4. Yeah, it's not great - most residences are derelict or unused. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about it.

In a way, you want a lonely area. It'll be less likely to be griefed. Griefing is illegal, but doesn't mean it can't happen. Most griefers are banned within 15 minutes with staff online. In order to claim, you need to be 5k from an outpost and 3k from other established bases. I'd say 8-10k out should do the trick.

The players are spread out a lot throughout lots of residences. You won't see a lot of people in the frontier, because it's mainly for building. If you want to see people, try going to EMC Events (here) and try to be active in chat. If you find out SMP4 isn't for you, you can always switch servers to a more lively one.

P.S. Also, my residence is on the border of two different biomes -- desert and hills -- so the grass is brown on one side, green on the other, (cut diagonal across the residence). Is there a way to change the biome to one? (Preferably green grass.) Yeah, it costs 20k - info here.

    Welcome to the Empire! :)
  17. Hi there!

First of all welcome to the Empire.... Well, there goes my playtime (I'm currently kinda short on time) but let me try to give you a heads up start. First of all, please don't pick this up as a "RTFM" (no; that F stands for 'fine' (seriously!) because this is a family friendly server); but as someone else already mentioned above; http://wiki.emc.gs is a great source for information. The Empire is constantly working on the wiki to make sure it covers all the important information in the easiest way to understand.

So if you need a reference; that's it.

BUT... Wiki or not I'll be happy to help.

Don't try to take it all in at once. My suggestion, this goes especially for your sons, is to focus on some main commands to start with and let the rest sink in over time.

For example; you can go to the wastelands (/waste), nether (/wnether) or frontier (/wild or /frontier) using there separate commands. As you can see: now you'd need to remember 3 - 4 different commands. That can be overwhelming.

So, for starters, concentrate on /town. It transports you to the town spawn, it provides you with some basic items to use (workbench and enderchest) and most of all: it has portals to the Wastelands and the Frontier. Sure; you don't have full control over where you're heading (these other worlds have outposts in several places (wind areas)) but it does help you to remember one single important command.

Next: /assist. Keep the Empire Assistant in mind. Not only is this one single command which gives access to a whole lot of other commands and functions, it also helps you learn those commands as you use them over a longer period of time.

Wastelands is for mining, Frontier is for building.

Wasteland can go to waste (literally), Frontier is to explore the wild frontiers.

Warning: Although the wastelands can go to waste (mining wise) it is still not allowed to grief. Golden rule on the Empire: respect other players builds, even in the wastelands.

Next; Although the Frontier is for building, you can build bases and such, you're completely on your own. Your area won't be protected from griefers in the same way you're protected in town. If griefers do strike then you can report them (the Empire does not tolerate nor condone griefing; people who break those rules will be punished when found) but you do take a risk. Also; you cannot teleport back and forth in the wilderness (wasteland & frontier).

You teleport to those areas from within town, end up on an outpost, then go explore. But to get back to town you need to make it back to the outpost first.

Small side note: you can lock chests in the Frontier for a small fee, that can help you to keep some items safe.

    Depends, probably not.

You can use the livemap (see http://servers.emc.gs) for the server you're on. Empty plots will be marked with an orange / yellow block which can be clicked, this will help to find empty spots. The server overview will also show you how many empty (available) residences there are.

Although it is nicer to find a spot together it may not be necessary. You can teleport to peoples residences using /v <name of player>, provided that they're on the same server. So even if you are placed apart from each other then the other persons place is but a single command away.

Maybe nice to know: recently the server staff has begun expanding the town areas. Meaning that we'll soon have a lot of new residences which are ready to be used. Could be useful.

As a side note: the default server (the server where a new player lands on) changes every 5 or 10 minutes (I don't know the exact delay from mind). So it is possible that your sons may land on a different server. If so then they can /unclaim their residence (remove the place they're on), teleport to the server you're on and then use /v open (find an available residence) and then /claim it.

None. Your residence is fully grief proof, even your animals are protected from harm done by other players as well as themselves (when an animal runs off your plot it'll be teleported back). The Frontier is just that (see above).

Here you'll find both the requirements as well as the benefits of establishing an outpost.

At this time it's more or less cosmetic, but there are plans in the making to allow outpost founders to protect their wilderness lands in the future.

    smp4.

Note that the Empire is a server which never sleeps, but sometimes we do take powernaps ;)

And no; I am jesting a little. There are hours when the servers are crowded, then we have moments where fewer people are on. At the time of writing we have 26 players out of 40 online on SMP4. Check this URL for the livemap, and you'll be able to see where everyone is: http://smp4map.emc.gs/.

Also don't forget town chat ;)

See the rules / recommendations which I posted earlier.

My personal recommendation would be to focus on the town world to begin with. Especially because the town world (your 60x60 plot) is completely secured from griefers. This allows you to gain experience with the Empire (which is my main tip: don't try to take it all in at once) and helps you become familiar with things.

Then you can always consider going out into the Frontier. But yes, doing so will bring some problems with it on its own. One concern being going back to town.

What I do is to use the frontier on another server. My home server is smp2, but I'm part of a frontier outpost on smp4. Because you can easily hop between servers (/smp2, goes to 2; /smp4 goes to... you get the idea). So if I feel like messing around in the Frontier (which I really need to be doing this weekend, I'm slacking a bit) I can simply issue /smp4 and pick up where I left off.

Want to go back to town? /smp2 and I'm home.

    Maybe something to consider....

    SO....

And once again welcome to the Empire. We're a family friendly server, we're also a server which is largely moderated by the community itself (I kid you not, and that's actually one of our strong features (in my personal opinion)) and the main idea is for everyone to have fun. Young and old alike.

Although I don't have children myself I've been here long enough to say that this server is a place where you can safely let your children play. The server more or less looks after itself. Sure, there are (and there always will be) rotten apples around but if there are then we have qualified staff members who can (and will) enforce our server rules.

One last command... or two.. If anyone is giving you trouble and you know that they're breaking the server rules then you can /report them (/report <name of player> <reason for reporting>).

Do not use this command for fun, to try or because another player annoys you but isn't breaking any rules. False reports are frowned upon.

But that helps you to bring an offender to the staffs attention.

If a player annoys you but isn't breaking any rules: /ignore them.

    So there you have it.

    Shell's mini-guide into the Empire :D

  18. Welcome. I have not been here very long, about 6 weeks or so. In my opinion, you have found a very fun and unique server, very family friendly. We are also a family on here. Depending on your play time and diligently looking for vacant land, you will get your residences next to each other. One of the best parts I really like is no raiding / no griefing. Does it happen, yes BUT the staff do a great job trying to track the culprits and punish as required. Hope to see you around.
