Windows 10: EMC's Recommendation and Win10MC

  1. You can do a manual update if you need to push it.

Have you even tried it cause from my perspective having to pay for a personalised skin does seem like taking my money.
  2. So if people have not noticed, Win10 is being offered for free to people running 7 and 8.1. This is partially in response to ending support on XP, rather than releasing SP4 (there is a privately fan-released SP4) to allow continued infrastructure use, as many corporations and governments still operate on the XP infrastructure, as the cost upgrade computer networks is millions of dollars depending on the size of the government/corporation. In fact, some governments have proctored deals with Microsoft to have a tertiary SP4 update for their system as they cannot afford the millions to upgrade or rely too much on the old system setup. Entities such as the US Navy and British government pay about $9,000,000 each year to Microsoft to get continued support from the company. In fact, many ATMs still operate XP even today.. I laughed one morning a few months ago, when I went to the bank to deposit a check and saw that overtly annoying BSoD on the screen of one of the ATMs stating that XP has crashed.. xD
And although MC: Win10 is available in the Windows Store, a post was listed in the launcher a couple of days ago that allows all people whom currently have a legitimate copy of Minecraft to log into their Mojang account to get a free copy of the Win10 app from the Windows Store, as it does seem to apply under the original terms and services that allows all upgrades to the game be applied for free forever. The console versions do not apply in these original TOS because they were not really developed by Mojang in entirety.
  3. You technically have to pay for a personalized skin in all of the console versions, even though they do provide free skin packs, I see it as with the streamline between Win10 and XBone, that the Win10 version is more of an XBone port than an PC upgrade, especially with the Win10 version not being compatible with a lot of PC resources.. o3o

  4. Duuudes windows 10 rules i think in ny opinions its wayyy better
  5. pssst i think he was going for the consumer versions, if you go server versions too then we need to add server 2008 and 2012.

I was saying that saying that Microsoft is not trying to take money from us is a wrong statement. I have the XBOX version and the Windows 10 version. The Windows 10 version is just a glorified XBOX version that is still way behind the regular desktop version.
  6. PS: Minecraft on EMC seems to work fine for me. Screenshot attached

  7. The windows 10 version is a glorified Xbox version and has very few features. I posted a thread yesterday about what Minecraft windows 10 is and isnt. It is in beta for a reason partially because Microsoft hasn't rolled out windows 10 to non—desktop devices. It is also free for us with small cosmetic costs. I would say that is still a pretty good deal given that this will likely be the version used on all of Microsoft's products that can't run java.

  8. Win10 is having that fancy feature that allows PC gamers to play with xbox gamers. If you think that it being a "glorified" xbox version is a downfall, then you have missed the meaning of it entirely.

How upset would you be if you only had access to the xbox version of MC, but your friend has the Win10 version and he got things for free that you had to pay for?

The xbox version of MC is setting the bar for Win10MC for a reason.

  9. Yes, I have. I've upgraded mine to Win10 since the July 29/30 and so far I LOVE it :) I love Tech. I have been following Tech Radar, PC Mag, PC World, etc.
  10. I used my 360 controller on it and it works fine.

  11. Ill give you an example of when I would use this... Some of my relatives really like Minecraft. However, the only version they can get is pocket edition because they are too young, and don't have a computer to play on. So, when these relatives come over to my house, they can set up a pocket edition server. I can then get on W10 Minecraft, and join the pocket edition server to play with them.

I understand if situations like this don't apply to you though...

  12. i just read this, and my computer cant run on windows 10 anyways because the cpu isnt supported ;D
  13. How.... What are you currently running?
  14. Installed Windows 10 at the release, and I have encountered 0 issues.
  15. Thanks for the insights Aikar.

Having been a software developer on MS platforms for over two decades I second your advice. Not all of the bugs Aikar is alluding to will a) be evident on day 1, such as gradual file, registry, or other system corruption, or b) be things you will never directly see, such as security exploits. This is why people who want stability out of their computers or who just don't want to reinstall everything (on the off chance of truly severe errors) should wait. Let the early adopters, who we stability lovers need, be the ones to find the issues.

I have found the number reports online about "Something happened" disturbing. MS used to be better about letting tech-heads like me solve our own problems. (e.g. maybe there was a driver conflict error, and I can remove the offending card and put a better supported one in. Or maybe the server was just too busy and retrying later will work. I can't know any of that without the technical details.)

Since I need to study and use MS OSes in my free time to stay current on tech to keep my job I will eventually upgrade. But I'm putting it off for a bit for the reasons mentioned above.

Oh, and I play MC on a linux box, so I won't be changing over to the Win10 version any time soon. I tried the RPi version, and well. It was cute, and incomplete, certainly not what I wanted. Also the Android version was cute too, and much more complete but again, not what I wanted. A touch interface is just clunky for me to use.

I do commend folks for trying and embracing all of these flavors of MC. As I understand it MC 1.9 will bring some UI improvements that started on mobile platforms. I also commend those embracing Win10 early in its release. Their efforts will let stability lovers like me have the desired stability once we upgrade. So thanks early and mobile tech adopters!
  16. The biggest thing I noticed was that Minecraft Windows 10 edition was significantly faster than PC edition. Normally I can get 20fps with optifine + tiny render distance and fast graphics. With the new version, I could get noticeably smoother gameplay with a far render distance and fancy leaves. I can't wait to see what comes from it.

  17. Aikar told me to wait a month, I installed it today anyway.
