  1. Hello all! :)

If you didn't already know, I am a dancer. This is my 4th year in a semi-professional ballet company, and I do ballet, pointe, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and teach a class for 3-4yr olds. I've met a few other EMCers over the years that also enjoy dance, but it somehow only dawned on me today that I should make a thread about it. :D

You are welcome to post anything dance-related here, but to get it started:
What are your dance experiences? Do you consider yourself a dancer, or do you just enjoy watching it? What different types of dance have you tried or seen? :)
  2. I think that's really awesome! I wonder if your team/group (I'm not sure how the company manages the dancers) will perform in front of a live audience on a full scale? Like Broadway or something? I'm rather curious. :)

My dance experiences are making people laugh with my horrible non-existent dancing skills, haha~

Personally, I leave the dancing to others, you know, those who know how to dance. I think those people are quite lovely to watch with their movements. Not only that, (it may be because I'm super inflexible) but watching them show off their flexibility just amazes me!!
  3. I do some sweet sweet pop n' lock
  4. I did tap dance for years, then I got out of shape  I wish I had stuck to it, some how I had rhythm with tap shoes but I could never figure it out with instruments haha
  5. I use to do dance for plays and different auditions and stuff. That was some of the coolest moments of my life. I've wanted to dance more, that and music together is something spectacular. I really cool how you've done it for that long and still are so passionate. Oh, and I know I am gonna get bullied but DANCE MOMS... GIRL.. I know it is all fake but the actual dancing is amazing and the edits are even better.
  6. Yay, a new thread. :D

    I have never danced myself.
OrangeDuck, however, who was my best friend in my first years on EMC, danced a lot, as did her best friend. I went to a performance of their group once, and of course saw them and others dancing at our school's Christmas musical every year. I wonder if they still do dancing! Maybe I should ask.
I think besides you, Moople, I don't currently know anyone who dances.
The class for 3-4 year olds sounds interesting! What do you do with them?
  7. My favourite dance has to be the floss, it only cost 300 vbucks! =D
    sorry not sorry =P
  8. Half of the class is ballet, and the other half is tap. :) We do a lot of fun little dances, and they sometimes have small performances at the fair or in the studio.

A lot of what we do is try to help them learn. Their names are written down on papers against the wall, and when they first come in they have to find their name and put their stuff under it. Most of them don't know how to read or spell their name, but they learn over time.

In the beginning of class, each dancer gets a colored circle with a number on it. They tell us what the colors and numbers are, and then the location of that circle is their spot for the rest of the class. If we step away from the circles, they have to remember which one was theirs and return to it. :)
  9. Love the poll option call-out ;)
  10. When Eviltoade responds to a thread, you know you must respond to the thread as well.

    So...
I personally do not really care for dance, but I do jam out to "Come and get Your Love" by Redbourne (the song Chris Pratt dances too) Of course, when nobody is around ;)
  11. Stopped dancing three years ago cause I didnt find a nice Studio when I moved :( Wish I'd continued it! My mom signed me up when I was five to do ballet and it just grew from there. I was just that average boy doing every class, five times a week! Must have done that for eight years straight and I really enjoyed it. Just started Yoga and am realising everything my body has lost since I stopped, everyone should dance! ;)

Edit: Need to add that when we had Rehearsals the most exciting part was the costumes, I loved those weird things! Once I even wore those "wooden shoes" or clogs, really fun! Quite embarrassing but when I did Acrobatics, I dropped this girl who I lifted
  12. Wow, that is so cool!! :D
    Very nice. :)

Huh, that does not sound like a good idea. :p Did it have a Dutch theme?

  14. Been a while since I've bumped this thread! Long post, haha.

Today I finished my 6th year of performing in the Nutcracker. I was a Ballerina Doll (a solo) an Orchid (Duet) and a Snowflake (Full company). :D All three shows went fairly smoothly, and I had a lot of fun! The best part is always seeing my friends and family at the end though. ^_^

I will post Nutcracker pics later, but since we are nearing the end of the year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some important things that dance has taught me, the first being determination/perseverance. :) Over the years I have overcome many challenges in dance. From physical challenges that required consistent stretching to improve my flexibility, to emotional challenges such as learning to accept corrections as a good thing rather than something to be upset about. I didn't get into the pointe class when I thought I would, and many years ago, I was upset by that. However, I kept going and worked hard towards achieving my goals in dance, and I have since been promoted to the highest level in the company and worn the pointe shoes and tutu that are in the dreams of many young ballet dancers. :)

This is something that I have built up and enforced in dance, but it can be applied to many aspects of life, such as jobs, relationships, or even school. It's perfectly fine and normal to be upset by setbacks or failure, but make sure that you learn from it and apply your new knowledge to achieving your goal.

Another thing that dance has really enforced in me is the way that I should treat other people. We are taught to treat our teachers and fellow dancers with respect. The theater that we dance in does not belong to us, but we spend hours cleaning it after performances to ensure that we leave it in better condition than it was when we went there. We all have to work together, and we all have our differences and strengths and weaknesses, but we learn to work with them.

I might add more later, but these were the first things that came to my mind, and I have found them very important. Dance is what you make of it -- A teacher, an expression, a hobby, an art. What does dance mean to you?

  16. A very painfull backbone.

Seriously though: Yes, I have done ballet. It wasn't very long and I was quite young, but I did actually enjoy it. It just wasn't a very "masculine" thing to do, which, at the time, was a reason for me to stop (I was bullied quite badly alredey, and didn't want to make it worse)
I'm kind of sad that I didn't contignue, as I would have quite liked to be a at least modereltly good dancer. (Also, have you seen those guys? God, they're hot  )

After that I started doing something else: Theatre. I started with musical, with which I kindly stopped because of my singing talent (or lack thereof,) but I later went to a group that played simplefied/translated versions of famous plays (I think I was 14?) I didn't really dance there, but the musicals still had quite some dancing in it (especially because the derector was obligated to give me a leading role, as I probably was over the 6 '2 at that age alredey (I'm 6 '7 now,) making me "noticeble")

  19. We may be stuck in quarantine, but that doesn't mean it's time to stop dancing! My dance classes are now online via video call, which is definitely a new challenge. My studio hasn't started doing all classes online yet, but I'm very happy to be going back to four dance classes per week this month. :) Three of them are ballet, and one is hip hop/jazz.

Has anybody else been dancing lately?
  20. Just when no one is watching... ;)
