Otus the Music Snob - Series Thread

  1. They're admired for their contribution to the music world, most of them are innovators who changed how music sounded forever. (Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, EVH, etc.) They got away with those acts, because back then those actions weren't as serious as they were today. Without these people, your alternative stuff that you enjoy may have never existed, music would of been unprogressive and boring all the way up till now. Of course, there are many artists that progressed music in its entirety who are good people, but music may of been different.
  2. No need to duh me. I think you are getting a bit worked up. You said, "In conclusion it's been dead since the 1970s. Kind of a good thing, seeing as all of its major stars were messed up (lead singer of Aerosmith did some awful things to teenage girls, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin did too, Billy Wyman of the Rolling Stones, Elvis's wife was 14 when they met and he was in his mid twenties, etc.)."
You infer that the '70s stars were messed up and aren't now or weren't before. Sorry to inform you but your own example of Elvis wasn't a '70s rock star. R Kelly has had a harem of underage girls for years and only now gets the headline because they have came out to the media that they were abused. It has nothing to do with 70s rock stars. What about Michael Jackson. If you hate 70s rock that's cool but if you want to make comments on the morality of very powerful men you should start a new thread.

  7. Uh? No, I have not. I wasn't expecting anyone here to know Andrew Huang, by the way. :p Except from Pink Fluffy Unicorns, I suppose, which I hear surprisingly often, from people who I really wouldn't expect to follow him - and they probably don't, they almost certainly found out about the song in another way.

AMAZING drum beat at the intro to kick the song into full mood, it really hooks you into the song and was a great implement. The rest of the song continues with palm muting and a light guitar melody, backed up behind what seems to be a keyboard, great guitar affects though! Song has an incredible atmosphere to it, absolutely pure artwork and pure genius. The drum beat sounds very punchy and very authoritative, I like it! The bass is pretty good as well. Spectacular guitar solo, it gives a floaty and spacey feel, love it.
Holy! The saxophone is amazing! It blasts out of no where and gives a raspy blow, great implement, would never of thought of a jazz instrument being introduced into metal; That's what progressive metal is great for though!

Overall this song is genius! I love the mysterious, atmospheric, hopeful, and peaceful world ending vibe it gives out, from the keyboard work which gives a great atmospheric effect, the rhythm guitar which gives your classic doom metal feel, and your lead which gives a melodic sound which absolutely kills in this song! This, all along with the great bassline give this song a great sound! Total grade: "+"

Thank you so much for sending in this suggestion, I really appreciate the talent and intelligence put behind Progressive music! This music is not for the simple listener, you really need to have an ear for music to truly enjoy this, and with that, I say you have a great ear!

INCREDIBLY HEAVY INTRO very loud, very Deathcore, I like it! Punchy drums which seem to pierce through you, along with the heavy hitting riffs, and the pulsing bassline, beautiful! The vocals actually don't scare me anyway, even though I do not prefer this vocal technique, I can highly respect the skill and dedication it takes, good work on him! Song gives a very heavy and angry feel to it, and it seems like this song would be a great gate way to release yourself from the things that hold you 'hostage.'

You're brave for listening to this music, and i'm pretty sure you're seen as abnormal for listening to Deathcore, but even if I don't like it personally, (I'm a thrash guy) I can see the skill and dedication that is included in this type of music, and because I have gained an adaption to heavier versions of metal, I can easily listen to this song and pick up that it IS MUSIC!

A very long song, but as a fan of Pink Floyd I can get through this.
Beginning brings a very much appreciate and skillfull melodic lead playing, beautiful!
Next part unleashes a heavy palm muted guitar and bass meeted with an amazing drum beat, head bangable..
Perplexing guitar solo which continues a bit later on, which then transitions into a messy, yet effective jumble of instruments which transition into the next track...

Mystical and emotional effect leaded with the simple strum of an acoustic guitar and yearning vocals which progress into a psychedelic type melody, along with great drums!
I love the questioning and desperate vocals and lyrics that are spread near the end of the song, it gives question, and a feeling of doubt. Great spacey/psychadelic guitar work near this line of the track, interesting and cosmic.

Overall, very neat song, takes some time to sit down and listen through it, but it has a really good drum work throughout. The guitar melodies and solos give off a great theme to this song, and the vocals and lyrics give question and doubt.. Genius "="

Thank you for this suggestion as well, never got into Avenged Sevenfold, but I will definitely need to check them out thank you, you have good music taste.

  10. Not my normal talk on this thread, but I just wanted people to know about how my music taste became so strong.

About a year ago, my dad popped a cassette tape into his truck while we were driving down the country side. That tape had 80s-90s Christian Rock and Metal bands on it, such as Petra. Although, one song caught my attention, and it was this one..

It was a moment that would change my life forever, a moment that would shape my love and knowledge for music. I don't know what was so special about the song, maybe it was the unique vocals and great hooks the song had, I don't know, but it was without a doubt, the song that got me into metal. After hearing a few more of Whitecross's songs, I immediately took a look to YouTube and got hooked; I have heard metal music before, but I honestly though it was all screaming and violence... Little did I realize this curiosity would open up a new world to me that would totally change my life forever.

Around this time, I used to actually hate music, strange right? I thought all music was boring and stupid, and the only music I listened to was stupid meme songs and popular hiphop songs that exploded out into the scene. Except for one band though, Marianas Trench, a Pop Punk band which luckily held my little interest in music together... a little I suppose. I don't know how it continued, but eventually I discovered artists such as Michael Jackson which brought back my interest in music back to life. This opened a gateway to older music which I took an interest in. Some of the first songs being, "Jukebox Hero" "Paint it Black" and a few other rock classics that took my breath away. At this point though, I never had a good ear for music, I wasn't focused on the instruments and the complex song patterns, I was more so bought on the hook, which I now understand is so overused in today's music because it's "easy" to listen to, you don't need any knowledge of music at all to like it.

After a while, I opened up more to other bands, such as ACDC, Guns N Roses, and eventually my favourite band, Pink Floyd. This of course opened up to wayyy more bands, such as, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Greta Van Fleet, Van Halen, KISS, and many other Classic Rock bands. At this point in time, my ear for music had grown at an incredible rate, I could now understand the complexity and skill it took to write songs, I could easily pick out and listen to specific instruments in songs and understand the role that they played, and this skill eventually came onto this thread!

At this point in time, I had never gained a huge interest for metal, and I had kind of kept Whitecross, Stryper, Holy Soldier and other bands that had constructed my music taste back in the shadows. Until, I found the YouTuber BecomeTheKnight. His channel can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBIObHID9vYsowPtbYKVdMw
If you didn't know, his the "Mike the Music Snob" series is actually the reason why I started this thread. I found an extreme interest in what he was doing, and so I decided to try it out myself.. I owe it to this guy though, he TRULY got me into metal music. First off I listened to some "Old School Metal" playlists on Spotify, which of course show your metal classics, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Dio, etc. But that is when I delved into the genres themselves, trying to find a preferred genre I looked to "Stoner Metal" which I instantly was hooked on by THIS playlist:

With this knowledge of what Doom and Stoner Metal was, I researched bands throughout that genre, and that is where I found The Sword and Black Sabbath. Interests in The Sword took off before Black Sabbath, but you know I instantly got hooked on Sabbath right away! With this huge interest in these genres, I then took interest into my latest discovery, Thrash Metal. With the fast speed riffs and solos, and violent vocals about politics, war and our world troubles, I was instantly hooked. (I grew an interest in Glam Metal when I discovered Classic Rock)

Without this huge interest in this kind of music, I would of never been the same person I was today. Music shaped my life like no other thing has. With music, I grew an incredible understanding about the world around us and the whole art of music itself. I have been said by my father to have an insane ear in music, and I can humbly agree, I can just point out what's good and what isn't.

Taking this in, I would like to also thank each one of you who participated in this thread. It not only expanded my knowledge on other genres, but it also strengthened my self esteem and allowed me to develop my judgement for music. Thank you guys, love you.

Impressive music video, considering it took over 3,000 frames to animate, and with how well they did it, lots of colours and the music video pops out. Boring melody though, nothing I can sit through too long. What the guitarist played was incredibly simple, as he was only strumming once every so often. Even then, his solo was pretty simple and is something I would see on a "top 50 easiest guitar solos for beginners" list. Same for the other instruments, simple drum beat, simple keyboard work, it all seems pretty mundane and very easy to listen to. Vocalist is pretty good, although I can't get with his voice.

  14. Tubelectric, from Jazz Jackrabbit, by Robert A. Allen. I couldn't find the music on YouTube in perfect quality, but this should do. https://youtu.be/o2idyeFWdmA The rest of the soundtrack is (in my opinion at least) very good also, but you probably don't know it, so I won't ask for a review of the entire thing. Here's another track though (again, not in perfect quality, but I don't feel like uploading them myself, as the entire soundtrack is available in good quality; just not the separate tracks.)

Retro Videogame music is not my passion, but nevertheless I do find a compelling interest in the unique sound it has and I can definitely see why you love it so much. Very compelling, nostalgic, memorable and unique.

  16. That's nice. :)

It's getting harder to think of music with lyrics... I've got another one, but it's Dutch again. :p
After this I'd like to share one of my own compositions (in the retro video game genre).
I honestly doubt you'll be able to appreciate this, but it's a true Dutch classic (and known internationally as well), and I wonder what you'll be able to say about it. ;)

I also did a retro video game cover of this song. :p

Heh, this song well.. um... It has a very cheery and happy melody and beat, something you would hear at some tame dutch party, but...... um... well.. sorry to say but... it's... SIMPLE OK... well actually, simple isn't so bad now that I think of it, actually, this song is pretty easy to listen to, I can listen to it while occupied with something and not worry about missing out on important lyrics and song parts. With that said, it's pretty catchy, I enjoyed it, but as you know, it's not. my. style. lol ;)

Also, PLEASE send in your own composition, I would absolutely love to hear it, and i'm sure it will be great, as great passion comes great outcome..

I was also wondering if you could do a report on the 'Retro Game Genre' ON this thread soon. As someone who hasn't really adapted an ear for it, I am incredibly interested on your take for it. All you really need to do is name the title something along the lines of "Retro Videogame Genre Review" and basically take it on from there, give a little backstory to it, maybe a few facts, and give some examples of artists, songs, retro games and your whole opinion on it. This of course is optional, but it would still be highly appreciated :)
    Thank you!

Some of you may of already heard of the passing of the young american rapper, xxxtentacion. xxxtentacion, Jahseh Dwayne Onfrey, or just 'X' was leaving a motorcycle dealership around 4:00 on June 18th, 2018, when a dark coloured SUV with two black males open fired on X who was sitting in his vehicle. Both suspects fled the seen and the shooter was said to have been wearing a Red Mask. Around 5:00 on June 18th, X was pronounced dead at the hospital, he was 20 years old. Previously at the scene, witnesses said he was motionless and had no pulse. After X's death, it caused a huge outcry within the rap community and left many fans heartbroken, and caused many conspirices of the late-artist faking this death, as he has done before.

X was considered one of the most controversial rappers at the time, as he had been charged with cases of theft and domestic violence. X was no stranger to a violent past, and was even apart of a robbery; what gained a large amount of attention to the late rapper was when he was charged with beating his pregnant girlfriend in 2016. He was awaiting a court date at the time of his death.

X grew up with a passion for music, and was influenced by artists such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Nirvana, and many others. During his time in a correction facility, he met with fellow rapper 'Ski Mask the Slump god.' After release, the two focused on several projects. After releasing a few albums and songs on SoundCloud, X gained popularity through his hit single "Look at me."
After a few more domestic charges and a controversial timeline, X continued to release records and gained a popular interest, releasing his recent album '?' and his hit single 'SAD!'

Although Onfrey had a very controversial and violent past, he was truly trying to change, as he became more loving towards others and his fans. In fact, X was shot only a few days before he would of started his charity run.
It's no doubt X has given so many fans a peace like no other. Some fans even account the times where X's music prevented them from taking their own lives, and this isn't the only thing, many fans found a huge connection within X's music; X, who was struggling just as much as most of his fans.

So, you can say that X was a very bad person, you could admit that he deserved jail time, but you cannot deny that his music changed the lives of millions of fans. X was hurting, he had a rough life which can be reflected upon many of his songs, and he just wanted to let others know that they were loved, he truly was changing himself for the better, which can be said by his very own lawyer, who said after his multiple court appearances he was done with his past and truly started to change his life for the better, looking at and owning his mistakes.

We must not pester this dead man's legacy for his terrible past, but we should look at the changes he made within himself, and changes he made around the world to his millions of fans. X had a huge opportunity of life ahead of him as he was only 20 years old, he just started a freshly new chapter in his life and the pages were ripped from him when he died.

I don't exactly like his style of music, but I definitely do appreciate the sheer passion, talent, dedication, thoughtfulness and love he put into his songs. From the bottom of my heart X, I HOPE you are in a better place right now.. May your legacy live on to give a positive impact on many people's lives.
