Otus the Music Snob - Series Thread

  1. Black Smoke Rises is my favorite from them too. I think they can be much more than a nostalgia act also. I happen to be disagreeing with my buddy who is a successful record producer on that one, but hope springs eternal ;)

I don't think it's all "new crappy music". I am an old punk. I have lots of faith in a garage and 3 chords lol.

There's only two kinds of music. "I like it, or I don't." Many folks will not have the same exact 2 lists as me, and that's fine :)

The Cramps (RIP Lux Interior) were one of the best live acts ever to perform. Their studio work does not begin to come close to them live, especially in the late 80s and onwards. The Misfits are my eternal youth, and will always be super fun for me. I love them. Neither band is especially complex, deep, or impressive. I don't often meet anyone who'd I recommend them to because they require an appreciation of something like say Discworld (the novels by Pratchett). But both bands are a riotous bunch of FUN, twisted humor and silliness, and for me, wonderful memories.

Anyways, I'm enjoying your reviews. Fun thread, thanks :)

The Great Gig In the Sky - Pink Floyd
    Suggested by: TuckerAmbr

Really hypnotic, floaty and psychedelic piano piece at the beginning. The song then transitions into Nick Mason's pumping drums, really good job on his part. Piano piece continues and an organ plays in the background, this of course is played over with the voice of a women singing, in the most interesting way possible, it's almost like she's yelling. Great part on Pink Floyd for adding the vocals there, it really makes the song stand out and is something I haven't heard of before listening to Pink Floyd. Very innovative. The song then calms down and transitions into a softer and more developed vocal track, this time with more range. Slowly, but surely, the song starts to fade away into nothingness. Exceptional work, very innovative.

This is a great song by probably my favourite band ever, and if not, my favourite prog band ever. These guys are geniuses, not only are they incredibly talented, but the way they layout their music and are able to connect every song in Dark Side of The Moon is astonishing, especially for their time. This song has great drum work by Nick Mason, and great organ/piano work by Richard Wright. Two very exceptional musicians who were very recognizable, they are a great part of Pink Floyd! The vocals on this song is really what makes this song stand out. I haven't heard these type of melodic vocals in any song before, it's true evidence on how innovative and genius Pink Floyd was, great band.

Overall, the song is very unique, hypnotic and dreamy, great job on Richard Wright!

  6. It's hard to say, and there are many opinions on the matter, but at this state, rock, mainstream wise, is dying, or is basically dead. Back then, the Billboard top 100s were full of rock and metal songs, but slowly, after the 90s rock became less rock, and more electronic/poppy, it faded away. Now, we have top 100 billboards which have no rock or metal songs apart of it. Even with a Rock billboard as it's own genre, only about 2 or 3 songs in there are actually rock n roll, the rest are alternative trash.

With that said, rock n roll can or cannot be dead depending on what you look at. Mainstream wise? Rock n Roll is definitely slipping off, and dare I say it's dead in that sector, which basically it is. As for Rock n roll as a genre; nope. Rock N Roll will never die and will always live on, forever. There are plenty of newly formed Rock n Roll bands now, bands such as Greta Van Fleet and Black Pistol Fire. These bands don't get much recognition, and they are covered by the other Rock bands, who call themselves "rock."

Rock is still quite a popular genre, and many people do still actively listen to it (exclude the alt rock peeps). People are still obsessed with Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Aerosmith, Lynrd Skynrd, etc.

So, is Rock N Roll dead? Mainstream wise, basically yes, in reality? Nope, Rock N Roll will never die, Rock brings so many people together and has changed music and influenced like no other genre ever will. In Total, Rock N Roll will never die.
  7. so what do you think of Avicii?
  8. I can't speak for the Billboard 100 or what it's like in the United States, but here in the United Kingdom we get rock songs pretty high up in the charts all the time. Mr. Brightside by The Killers, released as part of their Hot Fuss album cycle in 2004, has been a part of the Top 100 for two-hundred weeks and is the most streamed pre-2010 song, and is now a British cultural staple. Harry Styles opened up his singles release with Sign of the Times, a soft rock piano ballad that has a sound not out of place with 70s Britrock (David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, etc.). Even the boy band he came from, One Direction, moved from their 2011 teen pop debut album Up All Night to their 2015 pop rock finale Made In The A.M and were just as popular as ever globally (I also see it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 100). Moreover, despite their transition to lounge pop with their latest album, Arctic Monkeys continue to be as popular as ever and have been a rock band for 8 of the 9 years they've performed. Liam Gallagher, a former member of the 90s rock band Oasis, released his solo debut album in 2017 that launched at number one in the charts and outsold the other nine albums in the top 10 combined - and it was even a Britpop record (despite the name, it's a rock subgenre that spat on the face of American grunge, taking influence from 70s rock and 80s pop), a genre that hasn't seen much success since the mid-1990s.

However, I see you're refusing to acknowledge alternative rock as 'rock 'n' roll' and have labelled the entire genre as 'trash'. If we're going to go with that, we should also acknowledge the fact that 'rock 'n' roll' as a genre has been dead since the 50s when it gave rise to modern rock music, of which alternative rock is a part of.

I still don't see it as dead.

  9. Never got in to him because I was never an electronic music fan. The first time I heard of him was when he died. I don't know what he was like, and I don't know what talent goes into mixing electronic music, but he was sure creative and i'm sure he made a positive impact on many lives.

Heads will roll - Yeah Yeah Yeahs (basically dance till ur dead)
    Suggested by: ABlankCanvas

Song is definitely recognizable, although I don't like the genre it's pretty good. The singer is pretty good and brings a good taste to the song. The music is pretty hypnotic and pretty late night "party-ish." I enjoy a lot of the verses, they bring a ton of danger to the song, including
    "Off, off with your head
Dance, dance 'til you're dead (dead)
    Heads will roll
    Heads will roll
    Heads will roll
    On the floor"
Pretty gorey, yet pretty powerful. Why do I even say this is gorey? The music video is literally a werewolf mutilatingpeople who are spewing out confetti instead of blood. Possibly the most artistic way to die I would say.

Over all, the song has really great verses and a pretty memorable chorus. The vocalist combined with these lyrics make this song incredibly powerful and seductive in a way. This all of course stands infront of a pretty hypnotic electronical piece, pretty good for a genre I don't like. The song makes for a very deadly, dangerous, yet fun upbeat experience.

    Autobahn - Kraftwerk
    Suggested by: 907

This song has some incredible 70s space vibes to it! Seems pretty space rock. I like the whole theme of mimicing martian sounds, and I like the rhythmic beat and melody. Vocals are almost nonexistent in this song, but it's okay. When they do play though, it matches well to the music.

From this song I catch some early Pink Floyd vibes. The song has a really nice spacey feel to it. I like the melody and the beat, along with the whole relaxing nature of it

    Crockett's Theme - Jan Hammer
    Suggested by: 907

Takes the same theme as Autobahn, except the beat is much more in your face, and there is a much more clear and spacey melody. Quite fitting guitar solo in the middle of the song, nothing hard to play, but I approve!

Overall, this song has a really great loud rhythmic beat to it. Spacey and neat melody done by the synth. Neat bassline and a guitar solo and riff only a spaceman would be able to play. Over all, the song has a very nice in your face space feel to it, very cool, I like it.

Bearson feat. Kailee Morgue - Go To Sleep (Oshi Remix)
    Suggested by: ArkonXT

Don't really like dubstep or electronic music, but it has a pretty good heart throbbing beat, pretty good melody. The vocalist is pretty good, she has a good delivery. Over all, the song has a killer beat and bass, not a bad song at all, but it's really hard to review electronic and dubstep songs lol.

  17. Heh, I wouldn't count Harry Styles as rock, EVER, neither alt rock.

Rock isn't just a sound. Anyone can mimic that sound, including Alt Rock and Pop Rockers. Yes, you can consider them rock with the instruments and arrangements they use, but it isn't real rock.

Real Rock isn't just the sound itself, but it's also the people and the culture which makes up the song. It's hard to explain, but here goes nothing.
Bands like ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Guns N Roses, KISS etc. are rockstars, not only because of the music they play but their lifestyle. The things they do, the culture they have, their personality and geniuses are Rock N Roll. It's incredibly hard to explain, but Real Rock is not only the music, but the culture itself. You can have a modern "rock" band like The 1975 play only ACDC songs, but they will never be rock n roll. It's just because they aren't, they don't fit the culture, and they don't represent Rock N Roll at all.
I hope that made sense, Rock N Roll isn't just the sound itself, it's a culture and a lifestyle.

Sure, you may of named some british Rock groups who made it to the billboards, but like I just explained, they aren't Rock N Roll at all... They don't follow the lifestyle or the culture, they don't represent it..

When I talk about Rock N Roll, I also mean Classic Rock, basically most Rock songs between 50s- early 90s

As for Rock N Roll as a lifestyle being dead, yes, it is pretty much dying off now, where it used to be a Rebelious thing, now, it's become a genre basically for middle aged people at this point. Rap and hiphop have taken the position of rock, and thrown it out of the window.

Also, even if Harry Styles, One Direction, or The Killers made it to the top 100 billboards they still are not Rock N Roll, and will never be.
