promo sugestion ancient rolls the perfect promo

  1. My concept is that it is not a holiday per say, but a seasonal festival. No one is getting off work to celebrate it. Were we to incorporate more holidays from outside the USA, we'd likely stick with holidays that are more public. Sure, we may do fun events that sometimes align with one of the lesser known 'festival holidays', but this discussion was pertaining to promos and therefore answered to that specificity.

My brain is now rattling about an EMC Renaissance Faire though =D
  2. Festive food, music and Long bow competitons?
  3. Not trying to argue or anything but I think that definition of ‘holiday’ is subject to some extremely heavy culture clash.

From what I understand, America has ten federally-recognised national holidays, each of which are singular days, but does not have any mandatory paid time off.

The UK has eight of these holidays: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, a random day in early May, a random day in late May, a random day in August, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. But the UK also has six weeks of mandatory paid time off, which can be taken at any time in as many pieces around the year as you please provided the business or organisation you work for says “yeah sure, we can go without you for these days.”

Using your definition of ‘holiday’, you could say English people aren’t taking time off work for St. George’s Day, Welsh people aren’t taking time off work for St. David’s Day, Scottish people aren’t taking time off work for St. Andrew’s Day, and Irish people aren’t taking time off work for St. Padraig’s Day, so they’re not holidays. But many people definitely do take time off work for them and they are, in fact, holidays.

To confirm your suspicion, yes, Eisteddfod is more of a festival. St. George’s Day is similar though. Most European holidays are centred around festivals (Saint Days don’t celebrate the Saint, they celebrate the country and culture who chose the Saint as their patron in similar ways to Eisteddfod) rather than a ‘MLK Day’ or a ‘George Washington’s Birthday’, but we don’t get mandated time off for them. You either choose to take the day off and go to a pub and attend a festival or something, or you go to work, go to the pub and attend the festival after work.

I’m super glad to hear this though 👀 could be a lot of fun for all involved I think
  4. No harm in clarifying. Looking at those holidays would be EMC's focus then, though the random days are confusing, lol. The Saint days we just traditionally stay away from because of controversy/religious affiliations, with exception of the commercialized St. Patrick's day, which as you've said does cause controversy as well.

  7. If you have additional holiday suggestions, please make sure to follow the example of SteamingFire and create a thread with details of what you'd like to see. The more specifics included, the better.

  8. I do appreciate the statement that you only want to use heavily commercialised holidays. I've tried to form a stance on it several times, but without success so far. It's interesting for sure. :p
  9. I like the idea, but since most of the holidays in America are corporatized/commercialized, it may be a bit confusing. People would not understand the significance of this particular holiday. This is especially true since this is mainly an American Minecraft server.

+ I really like the initiative of the idea.
    - I do not see it being implemented, since it's quite "unknown" to much of the player base.
  10. It's more that for any holiday, we use the 'commercialized' side of the holiday. So while St. Patrick's day may have negative connotations or Easter may be heavily religious in nature, there is a commercial representation which we try to follow and stay away from the controversy. Call it politically correct holidays =P

  11. I'd rather not. But considering that it's a vague and multifaceted term, I don't really mind you using it.

  12. Perhaps we're looking at this from the wrong direction. EMC is it's own world. Establish EMC holidays that are unique to this culture. Founding Day - when was the server launched? SMP1 day, SMP7 day.... etc. Noodle day? Ancient Buns day (watch out for skin changes on that day - eewww).

  13. I am indifferent, I have nothing to support or deny this suggestion
  14. We have an annual birthday event, including promotional items. :)
  15. True. I have a few of the birthday items on my walls. I was just thinking of new names for the holidays for "Flavor"
