Should there be a limit on Derelict Protection?

  1. Permanent Derelict Protection has been an excellent add-in to EMC. While coming at a high price tag of $125, being able to take time off from playing and having peace of mind that their residence will be left untouched is amazing.

However, as of lately, I've noticed multiple highly-coveted residences (residences near spawn, corner residences, '#000', etc) be abandoned for multiple years (occasionally pushing 4 years). It would be great for staff to reconsider this system and put a sort of limit on derelict protection so active players could have a chance at claiming those residences. I'm sure these residences have higher foot traffic and would allow for up-to date builds, revamped malls, and more.

Yes, players did pay $125 for their residences to be left on the server but, in my opinion, if they haven't been on the server for an extended period of time, it's unlikely they will return.

    What are your thoughts?

  2. I have been saying this for years now. Unfortunately, since they did pay for it and were promised permanent protection I feel like they can't do anything about it since if they removed it they would have essentially stolen from them. So I support the notion that after several years have passed there should be some kind of system where they would either be moved or allowed to be taken finally.
  3. I have to say no to this, as pointed out above players have paid real money for this.

That being said I do get your point, some players have not been on EMC for years and may never return, so in this case if possible, Aikar could contact them and get permission to at least move their res (if built upon) to a new location.

I think though that Aikar is happy to leave things as they are as it's not an issue with so many vacant plots, its only players who may desire those plots who would/may have an issue. You could contact the player via PM on the website and ask if they would let you have it (have seen this done in the past), or you would pay them for it. You would then need SS to transfer the plot to you.
  4. I would say no because my hotels depend on it. My residents need to know that they will always have their rooms even when I stop playing.
However, if Aikar needs to get permission from the res owner first before resetting it, then I can live with that. I'll just keep saying no. My reses aren't in any particularly desirable spots anyway, so I don't think anyone would go to that trouble.

  5. No particular residence location is necessary to own, but rather desirable such as the spawn res.

To go back on the permanent derelict service (provided to hundreds of players for a considerably expensive price) just so people can get a spawn res easier is a terrible idea, and that's before you even consider any possible legal ramifications.
  6. perm protect sucks, lets just remove it
  7. Best we leave this alone, less we want to upset a lot of people who had the purchase with their money invalidated...
  8. I absolutely hear everyone's comments, and note that I am not suggesting the program be removed as a whole. All I am suggesting is t0 reconsider a time limit to the program (more than 3-4 years).

Example: If a player has not logged into the server for 1200 days straight, the residence could be up for grabs. If a player has been inactive for 1199 days straight and logs in at 1199 days and 23 hours, the residence will remain and will have another 1200 days.

There is a relatively high likelihood that players who haven't been seen for that period will not return as a previously active player.

I, myself, am happy with my residence locations, but there are multiple players who would love a better location due to proximity to landmarks on their respective server.

  9. My suggestion would be to keep residences protected, but if the owner of those residences doesn't log in at least once a year, their residences can be moved by request.
  10. I don’t have perm protection, but I’m all for keeping it.

A lot of player who have spawn Res’s may no longer be apart of our community (because life does move on) but they were first in best dress at the time.

We should be all happy with what we get, and enjoy our community how it is.
  11. Just because someone is no longer active it doesn't lessen their contribution to EMC history.

Permanent protection means that - permanent. If someone has paid for it then they have it and I really don't see any fair way of going back on that.

A permanent residence dereliction voucher is a promise. That promise is the residence will never go derelict. To change that would be to break that promise.

It could be possible to change that for future vouchers. Then you have a difficulty of knowing which "version" you are holding. It won't solve the problem of current desirable residences being claimable.

I am against any such change to the permanent residence dereliction voucher. It would break a promise.

  13. I stalk the forums for threads like this. As a spawn residence holder on 2 accounts; both with permanent protection. I agree to the following to "relocate" the residences meaning your belongings/architecture are permanently protected but not its location. The terms should be updated to such, even if money is paid as all services/features are always subject to change as per user license agreement via disclaimer section in supporter category tab.
  14. But they're unable to do this. When staff move reses, things break. Small things like torches, potentially big things like item frames. Those item frames could be holding your entire promo collection--that's how I display mine. If someone were to move my res, those promos could go poof if someone doesn't pick them up fast enough. Lots of things break and fall and, if they aren't picked up in time, go poof. So I really would not be happy if this happened to me. Even if I was there during the move and no one else could get into my res, what if I miss some important items? If I fail to pick up everything that breaks? If teleport signs break and I can't place them back without knocking down some walls because they led to hidden areas? Nope, too much of a pain.

  15. Obviously big changes need to happen then. To say it can't be done and end discussion is the lazy way out of not wanting to do anything about it. Work is work, if its too much of a pain, find a different position.
  16. Are you saying that all of the staff are not good enough? They do their best, but some things are impossible. The blocks that break are all of the blocks that are not full, solid blocks, and I'm not sure if that's EMC's fault.
  17. According to the Oxford Learners Dictionary:

Permanent: Lasting for a long time or for all time in the future; existing all the time

    Oxford says it best! Sorry.

A home is more than a building, but also the land it sits on. A lot of res' are advertised with their number. There are certain shops that have a consistent numbering scheme across SMPs. Even if a perfect move could be made, (as SteamingFire points out, WorldEdit is not perfect, especially if an orientation change is made). Some builds span multiple residences.

I don't see a way that such a move could be made fairly, without breaking the promise of your residences will never be unclaimed, no matter how long you are offline.

  19. If a player want's a town spawn res which is perm protected, you can send a PM to the player, it may take a while for a reply, I think though that most players log on to the web-forums even if they don't play anymore. The player Koyzoy on smp5 has a quartz built museum next to town spawn, this covers a few residencies. Some of which belonged to another player who had stopped playing, Koyzoy explained he was building the museum which was part built but he needed the other residence to complete it. The owner seeing the work that was being done and the quality was happy to let them have the area.

If you want a res next to town spawn, then I would suggest you contact the owner, perm-res or not they may want $ or Rupees for it. Although, I am not sure of the legality if they can charge $, however expect to pay more than the $100 or $125 they paid for it or several million Rupees. The last spawn residence that I seen sold on EMC was done by Krysyy and weant for 2 million rupees a few years ago.

My understanding is that permant res voucher is with the player not the res, so giving up the res they can just claim another somewhere else, this does need clarifying though by admin.

So as stated earlier, if they no longer play on EMC, admin could ask the owners of these town residences if they still wanted to keep them, if not admin would auction them off and its highest bidder wins. So my advice start working and earning rupees in preparation, and just so you know 4 million may not be enough.

  20. Crazy idea: Remove the town residence. It is outdated and serves no purpose. All new players start out on their own residence now anyway. Make a new world called the Town world. This would have a teleport to the usual teleports and maybe one for a random residence. I imagine it wouldn't be hard to do and it doesn't break and promises made.
