some IG specs?

  1. Hi everyone!

I have a few questions, the thread about which I didn't know where to put, so I'll put it here but tell me : if this is not the right place I'll erase it and rewrite it in the correct section.

    So, hmmm.

First question : is there no nether quartz in the frontier nether? I've seen clumps of glowstone hanging from the ceiling, but no quartz, be it in the open or when mining through the nether rack.

second question : is there a max number of entity set or is there no max entity cramming? I've tried to make a mooshroom farm (the small one where you feed the cows crowded in a 1*1*2 hole over a hopper) but all I got was a very noisy very densely packed clump of mooshrooms, and when I accidentally destroyed one of the block in their wall, I got a tsunami of mooshrooms flooding the whole place. Talk to me about running around killing cows that where dodging my blows ninja style!

third question : is it ok to build a mob grinder? if so, is any kind allowed? I'm thinking about a simple no-light inside type of grinder, that would be flooded regularly to push the mobs toward a hole, to their demise.

which bring to the fourth question : is there any restriction on the redstone contraption that one can build?

and to the fifth question : are there mob spawners in the wild, or not? And if yes and if I chance upon one of them, can I turn it into a mob grinder?

I'm sure I had a thousand more questions, but they seem to have flown my mind at the moment...
  2. Question 1 : Odds are you are in a very very old portion of the frontier when looking for quartz there. I may be mistaken, but I believe that area may actually pre-date quartz. Travel further out in the wild and you will find quartz in the nether. I know I have :)

Question 2 : I believe the cap is set to 250 in the frontier, 100 in SMP town, and 150 in Utopia town.

Question 3 : Yes, I have seen my son build a similar one to the one you described for spiders / cave spiders.

Question 4 : Here again, my son and I am sure a multitude of others would know this right off, but in general I doubt it, but if your redstone contraption is causing serious lag, then yes there is a limitation. I remember one neighbor in town used to have a firework launcher that just kept spamming fireworks, it looked cool, but when you got close to his residence....you could barely move. Staff intervened and had him make it where he could turn it on when he was actually using it for an event or something as opposed to constant 24/7.

Question 5 : As mentioned above, I have seen my son build similar things also in the frontier. I would just caution that you are keen on the Outpost rules and regulations in place and also utilize your anti-grief system to prevent damage to your build. You would not want to unknowingly build something grand in someone else outpost area only to have to take it down.

Have fun in your Frontier Adventure, and Welcome to the Empire

  3. Hi KnightZerOne!

thank you for your reply, it's clearer now. And I guess I'll have to venture far in the nether, then... booooo... I hate the nether...

  4. Just a thing about question 1: The frontier is not dedicated for mining, it's not against the rules but it's nicer to leave parts of the frontier you're not going to build in alone to keep them nice :) Generally if you're far away from others it's fine, but there's a world called the wastelands that gets reset every now and then that's dedicated to mining :)

  5. Resource gathering "really" should be done in the waste not the wild anyway. Doing so would also create new resources for you to obtain with the waste resets and keeps the frontier from becoming an empty waste lands itself since it never resets.

  6. Do remember that for mining operations, you should use the Wastelands, not the Frontier. :) And there it should be much easier to find Quartz, too, as the Wastelands get reset frequently!

    Edit: double ninja, wow.

  8. I'm going to approach question 1 differently

The area you're looking is most likely the nether from before quartz was added. I remember digging a tunnel to 5,000 blocks out after the quartz update to collect some quartz (whoa, that reminds me, I believe that quartz is still there in a locked chest!). If you go past this 5,000 block area, you should also be able to find some quartz, unless the area has been cleared from quartz already, or was generated before the quartz update. :)

In order to not have to walk/dig such a long distance, you can also collect your quartz from the wastelands nether. That nether gets cleared every few months, so doesn't have the 5,000 blocks no quartz zone, and more regularly gets new quartz. :).

Add to that, that unless you're mining at your outpost, it's generally advised to mine in the wastelands worlds, as opposed to the wild, because the wastelands reset every few months, but the wild does not, so by mining in the waste we're keeping the wild a little more cleaner, because that world is here to stay, while the waste is not. :)
  9. It's not exactly the right place, this forum section is normally meant for players to share their guides and howto's. General questions are best posted in the community discussion forum, but considering that this is about the Frontier you could also consider using the Frontier & Outpost forum.

I wouldn't bother with trying to correct this, just keep it in mind for a future post. That's the fun of the EMC forums: generally speaking it's a very relaxed place. Of course there are rules to follow, but when mistakes are made (like this one)... yeah well, that happens ;)

The others have already warned about mining in the Frontier. But... in addition to the above I'd also like to mention that there is no problem at all if you're on your own (officially established) outpost. Judging by your question I doubt that this is the case here but I figured I'd mention it.

Yes, use the /entc command to check for the current number of entities in your area. This works both in town (residences) as well as in the wild.

No problem at all, but always be careful where you build it. For example: if you head out far enough into the Frontier then you may come across areas which have already been claimed by others. You can still build there, those are not forcefully protected areas, but when doing so you always risk that others might not approve and ask you to relocate.

However, that will only start becoming a problem when you're at a minimum of 5k blocks away from the outpost. Within that area its pretty much a free for all (because no one can establish something there).

Tip: be sure to use /buildmode so that you're using block protection. This will prevent others from messing with your buildings.

Just common sense. To elaborate on the example above by Knight: if you leave your fireworks to go off all the time then this could also be a serious hindrance for your neighbors, because apart from the possible lag they're also constantly hearing those fireworks shoot out. Which can be annoying, especially if you have to continue to listen to that for, say, 3 hours worth of gametime.

However, there are some changes when compared to vanilla Minecraft. Most notably is the time which hoppers take to transport items, those have been lowered a bit in order to prevent too much lag from happening. You can find a full overview of all these specific changes (not just redstone) here.

Sure thing. However, always make sure that it's actually yours.

For example; if you come across a locked spawner then it's obviously already been discovered by someone else and therefor you'd better leave it alone. But anything else is fair game.

  10. Oh wow, shelly comes along and out-essays everyone...
I think everything I had typed here to explain things are useless now...

    Oh, shelly forget something:
You may redstone anything you want, as long as you're not abusing any mechanic (duping things/using chunkloaders with water despensers) as long as it is a legit farm, it should be fine, and, of corse, try to ceep it lagg-friendly, I think I'm going to make a little guide on how to do that someday (with some other redstoners) but basically try to not use/use a little as possible redstone dust (those make more lagg as pistons), and be sure to light up all places there are redstone torches, to prevent light updates.
  11. Nah... multiple answers, multiple opinions, multiple views. There's something for everyone :)

  12. Hi everyone!

I stand chastised... But to my defense I only intended to find enough quartz for a dozen of comparators or so, I wasn't going to and didn't intend to lay waste to the environment. I fully understand the need to protect it as best I could.

    thanks! I'll check asap

Thanks! Very useful tips I didn't know about!
Indeed, a thread about it would certainly be of great help, to the servers and to the newcomers!

  13. Since literally no one answered the main part of question 2, there is no max entity cramming.
    PenguinDJ and Jelle68 like this.
  14. For Question 2, there is no Cramming Limit, although EMC wants to add it seeing as its part of MC, but they disabled it to allow for players to change their farms.

So for now, they are fine, but in the future you will have to redesign the farm so they dont suffocate.
  15. afaik, if we re-enable cramming damage. We will give a warning first.
