This takes a little practice, but you can clear a DC of material very quickly. Note, other blocks such as dirt under the column will give you minor headaches since the shovel will want to break those, too. This also works under water. Practice . . . . . . . 😁

Carol, to clear columns of sand, gravel or sand-gravel mix. Do the following: Hold a stack of torches in off-hand (left hand). Using your favorite shovel, break the bottom block in the column - as the block breaks and the column begins to fall, place a torch by right-clicking.
