Waste Reset Warning with the upcoming 1.21.1 update

  1. This is a warning that the Wastelands will be resetting with the upcoming 1.21.1 update

I will note that Mojang has indeed released newer versions since. But we will be jumping from 1.20.4 to 1.21.1 only (with ViaVersion). Mojang is to release 1.21.4 next week. I hope to have us upgrade to that new version within a reasonable amount of time... It has new world generation features. And I'm unsure how I want us to navigate this double reset situation. I'm open to suggestions (maybe planning a reset on some of the worlds extra early).

Anyways, back to this reset. Remove any items you have in the Wastelands!
I'm going to give this about a 2 week warning... I don't see us updating before Friday December 13th. So that gives some reasonable warning. This update has a ton of backend work that has went into it. So we are taking these last couple weeks to resolve issues and prevent catastrophes.

I've got some other things in the works as well. Just not quite ready to announce more at this time. As soon as we can. :)

  2. Thank you to all the developers who work so hard so we can play and have fun.
    Keep up the great work.
  3. An early Christmas present! Thanks to all the devs for your time

  4. Hold on a second...

Announcing a Waste reset/server update on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving; and the reset date is on Friday the 13th AND it's 12 days before Christmas?! Those are quite the coincidences ;)
  5. I'll probably get to explore the new features after the holidays, but this is great! :D

    Thank you chickeneer!

  6. How dare you update this server around the time I will be off work for 2 weeks giving me tons of time to explore the new stuff in the game.

  7. Thanks Chicken!!! I love all of the comments . . . ;)

  8. Thanks for letting me know, I need to hop on and get my blocks of air out of the wastelands quickly! 👀️ 💦️

  9. Thanks so much for all the work you do, EMC team! Can't wait for the reset and the update!

  10. Would it be easier on you to hold off the update until you are ready for 1.21.4 or do you foresee that taking a few months at least to be ready for the 1.21.4?

  11. That is a valid question. The simplest of answer is, no it wouldn't be easier...

The current update from 1.20.4 to 1.21.1 has already ballooned to be just as complex as our jump from 1.12 to 1.15. I've gotta get some of this stuff out. The 1.21.1 to 1.21.4 jump will be smaller, but has an unknown number of obstacles within it. Could take me a couple days, or a month. Hard to say...

Truth be told. I am not ready to ship the update today. I am just hoping I find the time to resolve those last issues before then. :)
  12. Good to hear. I kinda figured it was going to be one heck of an update going from 1.20.4 to 1.21.1.

"Fun part" is it also seems that some of the modders out there are also having some issues with the change too.

Looking forward to seeing what is to come.

  13. I've lost track of what the current release is and what EMC will be updating too. All I know is that whatever you do, Chickeneer, I really appreaciate your efforts and dedication to this server. I also extend this thought to all staff and other helpers/builders.

There is always something fun going on in EMC and I am looking forward to exploring a reset wasteland.

  14. ^ This, 100% :D

As to the question about reset schedule, I wonder how fast the waste gets generated anyway? Like if it's a couple months until another EMC update will there still be enough unexplored Waste to not worry about it? I haven't kept track to know if this is a valid thought or not. That might also reduce the chances of there being any pale garden biomes to find, though.

    Two actually actionable ideas:
1 - Chunk Culling: I've seen this done for updating servers/worlds that are only one world. I have messed with it a bit myself, a program called MCA Selector makes short work of it. You filter chunks by "inhabited time" so that you can reset (delete) all chunks that players have only been in for a short time. 5 or 10 minutes is pretty safe, if you want to be super careful 1 minute makes it pretty dang unlikely that anyone has anything valuable in those chunks, yet it still nukes all the areas that people just ran/flew through looking for biomes.
This could also be paired with a warning to get valuables out if you (a player) are concerned, but know if you've spent any significant time there it's safe. I believe the timer counts any time that chunk is loaded by a player, not just the player sitting in that specific chunk.

2 - 50% reset: A much easier and less labor intensive option is to, as you said, reset some of the wastes. I'd say deside and announce now/before the first reset which SMPs will be reset again in a few months. I think Even/Odd SMPs would be a good system.

  15. This update will be adding the different versions of wolves/dogs, right? Do you know how that will impact the tamed wolves we already have on our residences? I have a lot of tamed wolves already and would love if eggifying them before the update and then spawning them in their respective biomes would let me control which of my wolves become certain variants.
  16. I'm lost.
Why are we discussing/proposing these ideas?
The way I understand it, generating the new wastes does not take much effort.
The stuff that takes time is adapting all the EMC-code to the new API/resources
  17. I asked for feedback...

  18. apologies, missed that.
I also missed that the pale garden stuff is not experimental and included in 1.21.4 instead of being 1.22, sorry.

For me the statement before stands, the bulk of the work is you adapting the code, not pressing the "reset" button.
I would support waiting for february/march for a full reset.

  19. Oh, after rereading the thread, I'm all for holding off on the reset so as to prevent a double reset condition.
