  1. Official EMC New Player Awareness Month - 2018
    (3rd Annual)

Does "What do I do?" or "Where do I go?" look familiar? This is a common calling card for a brand new player who has just joined the server. The experience of joining by itself can be overwhelming. Having completed the tutorial and entered a new world where all you find is an empty plot with signs you don't entirely understand, many players are unclear on directions they could take.

This oftentimes results in frustration and causes some to quit entirely. These players need our help in providing some form of guidance! Some of these new players have never even played Minecraft before, let alone played in a multiplayer setting. It could even be the first game they've ever played. The learning curve might be quite dramatic! An online community as we all know is a unique experience; one that should not be taken lightly.

To help rectify this, I am calling on all EMCers to help new players in any way you can throughout the entire month of
MAY (I help you?). As mentioned in the past, this, of course, is not limited to May but a good practice all year round.

    What can you do?

The most useful command we have is /newplayers. This will show you a list of all the players who have been on your smp less than a month. Use it as often as you can.

    New Player Checklist:
    • Welcome new players to the server, it is important to make them FEEL at home. Believe it or not, these new players will remember your name, and come to you when they have a question. Example: "Welcome to the server!
    • Letting them know that if they DO have any questions, they can ask at any time and you will be happy to help. Follow up with: "If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!"
    • Tell them that if they need additional help to please use their compass that was provided to them after completing the tutorial.
    • Commands such as /help, /guide or /assist are also essential as well as referring them to guide.emc.gs.
    • Reminder: if they have lost their compass, tell them to simply type /assist new, and this will give them a new compass to navigate the server. Their compass also acts as an actual Minecraft compass pointing the player to their spawn point and is soulbound so they will not lose it if they die. The command /map should be mentioned as an additional tool as well.
    • Remind them that they can gather materials in the wastelands, build permanent large structures / farms in the Frontier, or create their own experience on their plot - by building their very own house or unique shop!
    • If they remain for longer than a few minutes, PM the player and ask how "everything is going so far" and if they are liking the server. You may also want to include how to respond to your tell.
    • If someone is asking for assistance in Town Chat (especially a new player), please respond to their question, even if you do not know the answer and refer them to the Wiki.
    • If a (new) player is breaking a minor chat rule, such as advertising in town chat, that player may not know about Market Chat - In a helpful nice way, explain that "Market Chat is used for advertisements.". This can be applied to any sort of minor rule the player may have broken - if it is a more serious violation, /report them rather than attempting to correct their behavior.
    • If you have referred someone to the server, check back with them to see how they are doing.
    • The forums are also a great place to welcome new players - respond to their Introduction threads with kind words and helpful tips for getting started. :) Or write a little something on a new players wall!
There are MANY more ways of helping new players than the ones mentioned above.

    Do your best.

New Player Awareness Month is not about a promotional giveaway or offering a reward for welcoming the most people: it is about helping our new players feel at home. Our community is such an amazing place and it is sad when someone leaves before they can realize that for themselves...

  2. Lol I do this anyways! :)
  3. I love this! I mean, most of Empire does half of this w/o blinking an eye soooooo....
  4. I love this! It's always nice to see people interacting with new players and really making sure they feel like part of the community. =)
  5. Love it! I think most EMC players do this anyways, but it's still good to be aware of this.
khixan, loj, SansTheTimeLord and 7 others like this.
  6. I love it! I always try to welcome new players when I see the message pop up in chat, but I hadn't thought about how confusing it can be when they first join. I'll try to follow up and make sure they understand how to get around and do stuff more often. I think most people forget what it was like when they first played minecraft or first joined a server and had NO idea what they were doing, lol
  7. I concur. I had a few lovely people welcome me when I first joined.
  8. Always nice seeing this thread pop up once a year, for some reason it reminds me of my nooby days... wait... that was yesterday
  9. I think EvilToade needs to leave the swamp more often. :p

We do this all the time on 7, we enjoy letting New Players know about all the public farms that are available to them. It helps them feel more comfortable and confident before they go out into the Waste or Frontier.
  10. Nice to see that this is still going! It's a great thing to do!
  11. Mhm... I'm never online... I'll make an AI macro that responds to people when I'm afk, should be doable in an hour or two, right?
  12. I think that it is May twelve months a year on EMC :p. I honestly don't know any community or server that is more welcoming and helpful to new peeps :).

But this thread is a nice reminder and has some good tips ;)
  13. You know, practically everyone I already know on the server already does these things... :p I didn't know about /newplayers, it might be fun to habitually type that and welcome newer players...
  14. Same

  16. Last time (or the one before) I welcomed a new player and tried to help them they became a supporter within 5 or so minutes. Turned out it was an alt :D

Seriously though: Nice to see this coming back. As others have said I don't think it's really needed but I do like the extra attention for new players.
  17. I'm new an I already do this!
  18. Oooh yeeeeea boiz! Hopefully I can get on a few times throughout the month and see if anyone new is on

[Edit I realized a critical typo lol it's fixed]
  19. Huh, and I always thought this was
    "Welcome Toa de server!"
  20. I do this quite often yesterday I have a person that hadn’t been on the server 7500 to help them get started
