Upcoming changes to the official Empire AFK Policy

Discussion in 'Empire News' started by Aikar, Jan 24, 2014.

  1. Will the policy be different based on if you're in town or not?
  2. I understand that. Still. 20 days work for 20 minutes at a time? This just seems so dumb.
  3. I don't understand why this is being implemented? The only reason people should be booted, for being AFK, is if the server is reaching capacity. Again most of the people commenting are the supporters, the elite, the people who play A LOT. Not all of us have hundreds of thousands of rupees laying around to do what ever we want, when ever we want. Or do we have hours and hours to play nonstop. Some of us have a family and it's nice to get MC set up, next to our spawner or whatever, then take care of family business, dinner, etc. When that stuff is done come back to play. If the server was full boot me, but if there is still only 15 people (smp6) why then? Explain to me how me being AFK effects anyone? I don't have active neighbors to make my crops grow, villagers spawn, trees grow...

Sorry if this is harash, but it seems to me that only a hand full of people are making all the decisions for everyone who plays. If this is the new policy, then this is the new policy, it is what it is...
  4. I agree there is no reason to afk for 24 hours every day.
The only time 30 min is a long time, is when you constantly look at the watch and eagerly waiting to get home because you are so bored at school/work.

But please give paying supporters a perk.

  5. To be fair, we never allowed long term AFK.

We've had an anti AFK system in place for a long time, and even have had written rules on it in the past.

It's something we kind of just let slide to where it is today, without actually approving of it.
  6. I guess a boost for Supporters is not unreasonable.

  7. I think a REASONABLE cap for the afk is 4 hours just my opinion tho.
  8. I personally do not agree with this. Auto farms are deffo not easy to make, gold needs loads of slabbing which is a total pain and you must be determined if you're going to slab a lot. Iron farms are annoying to build and the setup building is pretty tedious. I don't see what's wrong with using an autofarm since you put yourself through the hassle of building one and spent the investment. Plus, you may noticed I made the word "auto" in autofarm red, it's because due to this update it isn't very automatic if we need to be doing something at the same time, kind of ruins the purpose (to an extent, won't really bother someone who was going to multitask anyway).
  9. I like this, but possibly normal members have 1 hour of afk iron gets 2 gold gets 3 and diamond gets 4 hours.

  10. Okay, some people are saying people put much effort in it. When you want to hack a website you put lots of effort into it too. When you want to rob a gas station you also put lots of effort and money into it. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be disallowed/punished. I'm not saying that with afk'ing on an auto farm you are doing something very wrong, I'm just stating that the statememt "it costs effort and money" doesn't work.

  11. So what if I just tape down my key so I walk into a wall, staff won't know and I will still be doing an action to avoid getting kicked, what then?
  12. Bypassing the AFK detection is punishable, and the anti-AFK system is more advanced than you think.

  13. Unless you used a macro, you really wouldn't be able to trick the system. Aikar's not an idiot, he knows what people will try. Odds are, you'll have to attempt to send various different packets to be considered "active." Things that would require more than one button press. Of course, if the staff see people walking in little squares while periodically saying identical messages in local chat, they'll catch on.

Autoplaying macros were already against the rules, so nothing really changes here. I don't see what's so obscene about this change. Heaven forbid you have to be at your computer to collect resources.

  14. Then you are a bad man, sam;)
  15. I do agree it shouldn't be so much higher over DT. So I guess I will delay it some.

My plans will actually be smart enough to detect that.
It is still very much automatic. you do not have to do anything explicitly to the machine to operate. You just have to give the server a reasonable belief you are still around and not leaving it AFK for all day.

Spending tons of resources does not buy you the right to then AFK 24/7 using up resources. Iron Farms take quite a bit of server resources to operate, and its not fair for someone to spend 8 hours of resources causing lag when there are other players trying to play the game.

Now if you are at your game, then you will not need to put barely ANY effort in to make that machine run full auto.

Simply moving around *on your own* (not a game action moving you) will be sufficient to mark activity.

    -------
But to alleviate some concern -- how about this: 1 hour before you go inactive (or kicked if server is full).

This is enough time to get dinner or a TV show in, and requires no effort to pause a movie for a second to go show some activity in game.

And Gold+ Can receive 2 hours.
  16. The way you are saying it makes it sound like a crime. Everybody on the empire is capable of exploring until they stumble onto a gold or iron farm. I have done both.
  17. Yes, thanks for reasoning with us Aikar. I definitely think that this is fair for all players.

  18. Yes, I saw that, that is why I edited the last bit in. "I'm not saying that with afk'ing on an auto farm you are doing something very wrong, I'm just stating that the statememt "it costs effort and money" doesn't work."
  19. Dang I was just ninja'd by everyone DX
  20. I like this. Maybe as a reward for active players, achievements?
