?

Do you remember the previous (and first) Minecraft update that was split over two major releases?

  1. Hi, it's me again!

As you will probably know, the Caves & Cliffs update that was intended to be 1.17 was split into two updates when Mojang realised that the terrain generation was going to require a lot of tweaking and feedback to get right. Now that 1.17 has been released, Mojang have been releasing experimental snapshots for 1.18 to test the new terrain generation. These snapshots are not compatible with other versions of Minecraft and have a lot of major changes between them, but it might be exciting to see screenshots of some of them! It's definitely not only the look of caves and cliffs that will be changing. I don't think Mojang anticipated that this update would be so big. ;)

Here are some images grabbed from Google; most of these are probably from the first 1.18 experimental snapshot, which means that the latest snapshot will not look (exactly) the same.

I think I'll generate a creative world in the latest snapshot myself soon. :)
  2. Thanks for making this thread, 607. :)

I'm genuinely curious how Mojangs new terrain generator will handle older chunks. I've heard that they'll "blend" it to the new terrain, but... until we get a snapshot that supports the data migration, (sadly, the experimental snapshots do not) my curiosity continues to suffer... :(

Definitely looking forward to the new caves! They look total boss, and they revive that old Minecraft meme of "Do not dig straight down!" :D
  3. Of course! They saved the best for last. I have been watching closely as time narrows in on their due date. My hunger to have better, mountains! Mountains! And caves the size of mountains… think about it.
    That’s mountainous! :<3:

I wonder if Anony will commission another big dig event! Y’know a group effort to see who face plants into a cave first. Totally worth it! We should do that…yeah…

The dangers of the deep are returning. This is good news! I’m curious enough to go and meet this new warden creature. Hopefully it’ll be balanced for a good fight, but I don’t know, killing a player in two hits with full netherite armor? Better bring some friends sacrifices! :lmao: Sorry, Varua!
  4. Now if only we could walk up a slope instead of hop-hop-hop-hop-hop-hop-hop...
  5. Can't wait for it to be our Christmas presi or somewhere near that!

It looks amazing, only change I am wondering is that mobs now spawn the Same amount no matter the y lvl

So u could have a farm at the bottom of the world and it would preform the same at the top of the world.

  6. Huh, do you remember where you heard this? I was assuming we'd just have the ugly clearly visible borders that previous terrain generation updates have caused.
You could turn on auto-jump if you want. ;)

  7. Hey, them are significant landmarks! Fewer of us remain now, that were around then to see those suddenly unexpected chunks loaded in bizarre formations… we were truly dumbfounded at the scene of it. Why, back in my day, we used those landmarks to know we were going in the right direction. It wouldn’t be the same without it. I remember boating through oceans and the chunk would load, and bam! Instant cliff! Rip boat.

  9. You piece of uncooked chicken.
  10. The entirety of that video is actually quite interesting, and fun to watch!
    Thanks for sharing.

  11. In the most recent experimental snapshot, cave generation was added back to oceans! There used to be underwater ravines, but these were completely separate from other cave generation. Now ocean caves can connect to non-flooded caves.
    Cool!

  12. The first regular snapshot has been released!

    What do you think?
I like the meadows and the aquifers a lot. Still haven't taken a look myself, though! I'd enjoy doing it together with someone else, but it'd either have to be a housemate (huh, could be a fun idea) or we'd have to set up a server.

  13. The terrain looks awesome! Those mountains look really sick, as well as those deep dark caves I cannot wait to go mining in them~

I'm glad that the audio engine of the game finally got some long-deserved attention. I have multiple audio devices and switching from one to another, then back again, kills all sound from Minecraft and I will continue to hear silence until I reload the game. This was never fun... Glad to see that they are allowing me to configure my audio devices in-game! I am very joyous of this!! :D

  14. Roaming around and I found this. Still amazed at the new generation.

  15. Wow, that is impressive, thanks for sharing!
I feel like this might be a bit too much, though? I guess it's better when you move around, but as a static picture there is too much here to process at a glance.

  16. I see this being a nice view for an underground base. Keep in mind that I am flying and using night vision. This all would be dark except for the occasional glow lichen.

But yeah, it is a lot.

  17. I second this! It’s a very beautiful place underground you’ve discovered, and although a great mix usually contains a wide variety, I personally, feel like there’s too much to look at.
It’s an incredible find with serious potential nonetheless, thanks for sharing Unoski!

  18. I agree that it is a lot all in one picture alone. But odds are this isn't final and there's still plenty of work that needs doing for cave generation to make sure it doesn't end up looking like a bunch of stuff mashed together like this. So I'm not too worried for now.

  19. I'd like to have seen it without night vision! It's good Sky pointed that out, I hadn't thought of it at all. Caves have always looked a bit weird with night vision, I think.

  20. This is what you would be seeing. I placed those torches on the bottom left.
