There were a lot of parts where it was just mining and not much talking, so it wouldn't have been fun to watch.

Depends what you look at. Since English came from German, its best to look at that. Just an example, "center" in German can (several spellings) be spelled as "center", rather than "centre" as many non Americans spell it.

English is indeed derived from German roots. If you look at old English, its very noticeable. The spelling of a lot of our words later took a more turn towards the latin based side, even though, English is not based of latin, like many other languages that look very similar. Spanish and Italian are perfect examples. You can see many similarities of the words that we have, with theirs, however, they are Latin based languages, while English is German based.
