If the Catholic church didn't exist Canada probably wouldn't have an entire First Nation population who were stripped of their traditions and culture. I'm not surprised a bunch of kings in the 16th centuries left the Catholic church for Protestantism either.
By the way, faith is not the only thing one can be radical about. My ex-Latin teacher, who is still a friend of mine, isn't religious. However, she is radical: she doesn't eat animal products in any circumstances, and heavily protests against meat and animal abuse where appropriate.
We're talking about radical religion, not radical vegans. Radical Religion as in ruining everyone's culture and tradition, killing those who do not believe and basically ruining everything.
"Radical Religion as in ruining everyone's culture and tradition, killing those who do not believe and basically ruining everything."
... Where did you get thát definition from?!?
Jesuits during the colonialism era, ruining First Nation culture, wiping out 90% of the population with disease, as well as forcing Native kids into boarding schools, they would return home forgetting their entire language and culture they left with.
ISIS in the middle east, an Islamic group, doesn't need to be explained either. The Catholic Church also burned people for "being witches" even though they were not, and they even tried to exterminate Martin Luther for wanting the bible to be read by everyone, and wanting a religion where it isn't run by popes and bishops.
There's so much I could say, but the Catholic Church is the complete opposite of what Christianity should be. I don't mean all Catholics though, but the people who run the show.
Yeah. That's sad.
However, it's not relevant to being radical. If the Catholic Church would be the complete opposite of what Christianity should be, then obviously they aren't radically Christian.
Thanks. "associated with political views, practices, and policies of extreme change" Hm, I wouldn't quite agree with that, but as a modern dictionary, I suppose it is a good description.
However, this still doesn't say anything about "ruining everyone's culture" and "killing those who do not believe". (Phew!)
607 is known for creating discussion on what english words mean lmao, we are going to be talking about the english language all day rather than radical religion which has ruined the world.
i respect people and their opinions and beliefs but someone who is a natural english speaker i feel should perhaps know more than someone who speaks it as a second language..
I figured you would think so now, but I am in fact not talking about the English word. This word exists in most languages, so what language we're talking about doesn't matter. But _because_ it's quite a universal word, it's very concerning that some people (it's not only you, even some journalists do it...!) attempt to RADICALLY change its meaning.
607, times change.
Maps change.
People change.
Words change.
If you can't accept that, you'll be very, very doomed.
The only permanent thing is change.
You have to understand; it doesn't matter if a word gets new meanings.
It means nothing. Radicalism has changed, morphed.
We think Radicalism means something else now; the dictionary says otherwise.
Who's right?
The people are right. Words have no inherent meaning. They are symbols. Symbols can be redefined.
See? Everyone is using it in a new context!
New Context=New Meaning.
People don't care whether you don't like the meaning, and I sure don't. There's a new meaning now.
At first sight it might seem like it doesn't matter if a word gets new meanings. But it does. Because if a word gets new meanings, the chance is there that in time people will forget about the other meanings and always interpret the word with its new meaning. That means that the original meaning will be lost.
This certainly is bad, and reminds of George Orwell's Newspeak.
Whereas Newspeak is the Madness of Destruction, new meanings is the Joy of Creation. There is a certain fun in the creation of new meanings, is there not? You conflate new things with destruction, but in its place comes creation.
Creation is an art, and one should never underestimate new ideas. It is a gamble, but when has anyone ever succeeded by not gambling something?
Words change all the time. A word for 'happy' became one for 'homosexual'. A word for 'weird' became one for homosexual too. 'Awful' used to be used in the same context as 'awesome'. 'Cute' meant 'smart', now it's a descriptor for an attractive person or something that makes you say aw. Words change all the time and every single one of them can.
This isn't newspeak. Newspeak was a commentary on how the Soviet Union abbreviated their words, e.g 'Politburo' = political bureau. It was used to enforce the laws of thoughtcrime. Natural evolution of a word is not a step in that direction.
Fear not the Joy of Creation.
There is hope in Creation, and none in Maintenance. Even if it is not broken, one should fix it, make the World Brand New.
With creation, we can make the World new again. A World of which you speak would decay to oblivion, 607.
I fail to see the faults in the natural evolution of Words, I fail to see the faults in Creation.
Old things have been phased out for a reason. I see little value in continuing to put on life support that which cannot live on its own.
However, I will say that 'radical' is not a BAD word when used outside of the context of religion. As you said, vegans are radical but they have the wellbeing of animals and the entire planet in mind. Sometimes they go a little bit overboard and annoyingly evangelical, but it's for the right reasons. When it gets put into a religious context it is now colloquial with 'extremist' though.
I can't put it better than Jamie.
Still, I've found out that most people see being radical as a bad thing, which it clearly isn't, so maybe I should write a column or sourced article about that some-time, which I can direct people towards.
Radicality's a word! Used mostly in the medical field although it also refers to someone's radicalism - e.g "His radicality is at the forefront of his message."
