EMC Updates

this is the SECOND time I've had to redo my whole minecraft edition because emc wants to apparently "update" (I use this term extremely sarcasticaly due to the fact that the editions seem to be REGRESING in number)
I used to be able to use 1.12.1 JUST FINE
now I can't even get on!!! @_@

Something must have gone wrong during the updating process, or it's still updating. Also, use this thread to discuss or report issues you encounter with the server.

I just posted about the same thing on the "Server Problems" thread.
Apparently, staff are currently on by themselves testing new voter's items.
An announcement would have been nice to have for sure.

The voters items part was a joke, but the servers have been updated to 1.12.2 now.

so you're telling me-
that they locked everybody out of server...

Yeah, that's sort of on me...didn't catch the sarcasm in that one myself

The servers are up now, but they're restarting to fix some bugs. You don't need to reset anything to update to 1.12.2, either. You can choose the latest version using the client, and then go to optifine.net/downloads (click on the latest mirror link for no ads) to install OptiFine. If you don't use OptiFine, now would be good time to start using it, too, if you want your gameplay improved.

I bet they had everything ready to go and upon deploy something went wrong. Took them less than 15 minutes to fix it, so it's not that long of a downtime. Things like that happen sometimes, it's tough to predict 100% of the stuff that will be affected post update.
I've been on their side and can attest to the extensive bug testing and fixing before any update to ensure the smoothest transition to the live servers.
You should be able to connect using MC's latest version, 1.12.2

Try using direct connect and smp#.emc.gs.

if they're going to be updating the server they NEED to ping people in an announcement letting them know-
instead of just springing it onto us without even so much as a heads up

I definitely agree. Usually they send a 1-5 minutes announcement so people can get ready for the update, but there were a couple times where, for some reason, the timer didn't work and the restart was immediate. Probably what happened today, and to add up to the bad luck, there was an issue with the Bungee servers.
Aikar said it should be fixed now, but if you still can't login, try what Floorfne said ^
