I do not think that they are zombies... Just that their circadian rhythm must have been messed up, causing an incredibly slow pulse. Wow... But how can you believe that a zombie apocalypse or something of the like would actually happen? It might come in handy if a war ever occurs where they live though.
In theory, a zombie apocalypse could happen with many of the parasites and bacteria alive and infecting people right now. However, they would have to spread out of the country (and many of them are restricted to infecting two or three towns because people don't live nearby) they originate from - and pretty much none of them have. Also; a few armed 20-40 year olds against an army taking control of a small street, probably with a tank? They wouldn't get far.

it is Very possible, as all it is, is a infection Virus, just like that virus that was named after a pig a while back (Cant remember the name ger) anyway, there have been incidents at where people had made a virus before and had to close the factory down. A zombie apocalypse wouldn't happen because of a virus. Bacteria can infect the brain and cause you to behave oddly, so it would be plausible for bacteria. A parasite is more likely - they can create zombie slave insects for themselves. Why can't they evolve to do that to humans in the future? Easy. They can evolve (since they are ever so slightly massively larger than bacteria and viruses, it may be awhile ), and may infect humans someday.
You have to remember that the brain is a complex organ and it is protected quite well. As the brain is so complex, it would take so long for a parasite, virus, bacteria, whatever to actually make someone a 'zombie'. I'm just going to say Virus but I mean a parasite, virus, bacteria, whatever, some sort of illness like a fungus etc. - would need to learn how to override so many parts of the brain.
