Debate/Argue Thread

  1. I recommend you get yourself a copy of the book called Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed at All and see if you are as confident in your statements about Jesus afterwards.

You may also want to take a look at these YouTube videos, they're very informative regarding various aspects of the Bible, especially its historical accuracy and its origins. If you for some reason can't be bothered to see them in full (though I strongly recommend that you do) you can watch only from 2:43 through 9:15 in the first video. I cannot trim anything from the second one, however.

Of course, I even more strongly recommend you see the whole video series, but that takes a while (3 hours 45 minutes total), and if you're not particularly interested, I'll understand if you won't. :p

  2. Easiest way to start a flame war on EMC is:
"Copherfiled is God, EMC sucks" - If you said this you'll be hunt down by a flock of cows (inc. ICC) and killed

  3. So you think i'm a lazy christian? (Watch what you say next....)

Have you ever heard of the expression "Read between the lines"? That is what i'm doing. If you take time to study the Bible, God will reveal SOME of his secrets to you.
  4. Why would I bother to study a book full of flaws, contradictions and forgeries like the bible? You should take a look at the book and videos I posted earlier to see why the bible is a pretty worthless document.

    Also, relevant to earlier discussion:

  5. That's what I said.
  6. Oh, like the scientific conclusions made in the last five decades have not also been filled with flaws, contradictions and forgeries?
  7. Yes, but good scientists attempt to correct any inaccuracies, whereas Christians make no attempt to correct inaccuracies.
  8. On what basis do you make that statement? Thats kinda false, and biased
I do know how much of the Bible you have read, but this is not really what the majority of the Bible focuses on. It puts faith in Christ as definitely the most important thing.

" 'Teacher (Jesus) which is the greatest commandment in the Law?' Jesus replied, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" -Matthew 22: 36-39

I would say this pretty clearly states what the most important message of the Bible is.

  9. I'm not too happy that you call the Bible "A worthless document"
The Bible is the teachings of God and Jesus when he was on earth, and it the most reliable thing in this world you can read.
All of the other books have had Christ erased, because the government wants everyone to belive THEY and only they are in charge.
And i will not read your books or watch your videos, becuase they will just waste my time.
  10. Jtc, if you won't respect his opinion and listen to his argument, please don't expect him to listen to you. The point he is making is a valid one, there is a lot of controversy over the accuracy of the Bible over time, and blowing it off like that is not respectful, or helpful to a healthy debate.

  11. Even if I did listen to his arguement and respect his opinion, he would not give it back to me. (And i do forgive him for that)
If he attacks my religon, i will defend Christ.
  12. So far, everyone in this debate has been very respectful, and just because he is not agreeing with you does not mean he is not respecting you. That's how debating works, please don't make it personal. Also, he is not attacking christianity, merely debating its value's against those of a modernist/scientific viewpoint, which is exactly the point of this thread. By all means counter-argue, but don't take it personally.

  13. Star Wars and Star Trek is for fail at life and cant realize Doctor Who is a way cooler and better and that Star Trek didn't come first and neither did Star Wars. Because Doctor Who came first and is way better.

  14. No no no.....Star Wars is set a "long long" time ago, Star Trek is in the future, and Doctor Who is our time period (I think). So Star Wars is first, and better :)

  15. None? Anywhere? Anywhen? Ever?

    You are still HyperboleNinja. ;)
  16. Okay, that was a general statement. From personal experience, I have never met a Christian who admitted there are mistakes in the bible.
  17. While I'm no expert in the Bible myself, I have learned that you're not always supposed to take things in the Bible literally for today's life. A lot of things, yes...however it's also a book of stories of how people lived back in THAT time it was written, so it's not really mistakes, but just a history book of what happened in the past, so we know where we came from to where we are today.
  18. In order to understand the Bible, you have to be able to understand the context. If you think about it, some of that stuff was put to paper 1,950 years ago. The historical and cultural context is different from our own. Also, all we read are translations of the original texts (unless you read Koine Greek and Aramaic). These are considerations one must take in understand what the Bible is really saying.

  19. Something I have always wondered: what do Mormons think about the episode of South Park on Mormonism?
