[DEBATE] PVP servers and shop updates

Discussion in 'Community Discussion' started by Herbrin3, Aug 11, 2012.

  1. I mean people against this will voice their opinions MUCH more then those who support it.
  2. not many people no this but smp6 had aarow pvp it might still be there
  3. I'm in the middle of transitioning my server to new hardware

A lot stronger to run minecraft on and cheaper...
    Code:
    Price: Old: 100$/mo
              New: 70$/mo
    HDD: Old: 7200 rpm 1x 250 GB
              New: 7200 rpm 2x 2000 GB (RAID 1)
CPU: Old: Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2344 HE
              New: Octo(8)-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 3280
    RAM: Old: 4GB
                New: 16GB
    BANDWIDTH: Old: 5TB
                                New: Unlimited

My server will be back up soon as I'm done transitioning.
Also, my server is not a permanent server. I will occasionally wipe player data if needed during my development of the PVP server. So you can have fun on it (I have a free for all pvp zone and such) but it is not a "guaranteed to build on" server.

Also: to clarify... the PVP development stuff will not be accessible by anyone but staff + my family until we reach a "beta" period.

If you connect, you will not be able to see the PVP game world.
  4. Thanks for the code, and i know its not a build Pvp server. I was on with Bigdavie to test that *Winks to Bigdavie*
  5. ok this description makes me want to do PVP and i usually am not a fan of PVP

this is gonna be like Rampage-style PVP, if anyone remembers that game... except we won't be giant lizards/dinosaurs LOL
  6. Lol
    Like for you.
  7. Like I said before, this style of pvp will make non pvp'ers want to play it... Think of it like the monsters got smarter, and you gotta destroy their strong hold.

I will finish up the post this evening (ill try to work on it during work) with the full details.

Summary: You have a base, you earn money from killing others, you earn money by finding/mining resources in "The City", you find shops to sell them to for increased profit, or sell for bare minimum prices back in your base.
You work on improving your bases defenses as a group, and then build up an attack force to raid the enemies base.
You destroy the enemies base defenses, then go for the kill, and victory...

Constant action, Objective based, Team Oriented, 15-1hr (or longer depending on how good the teams are!) games!

  8. What if u have no teammates?
  9. Ya. That was the esimate for a Guild Wars 2 Beta PvP thing for one faction to dominate, or take every single point. And after the beta, they concluded it was a 17-29 hour. Just though I would put that out there. :p Also, I know you will probably say no, but do you need any help building the map? Since I want to contruibute to SOMETHING on EMC, that isn't one stupid random command.
  10. We are using a special World Generator that will generate the map differently every game :) Basically we will be modifying the world gen to tie into its creation of stuff, and "know" whats around, and then prop in our own stuff into the city.

Say, as the world gen is building a building, we will randomly place treasure chests, shop signs and such in them. So players will want to explore these buildings to find good stuff.

Static maps are a nono... Long time players will learn the map and know how to take advantage of its design, making it unfun for new players.

This is the point I was trying to make to Herbrin3, other servers do not do PVP correctly, and we will be making significant efforts into doing it correctly so the pvp REMAINS a fun match for all players, new and old, and equal grounds for every match.

  11. Here's a question. Why does the staff need to do a survey at all to add or change features on THEIR servers? They are out to make the biggest server ever, with the most people. They think this can do it. So who cares what you think? We don't control what they add to Emc. Arguments against anything added could be raised which is probably why he is keeping it a secret.

  12. Eh, I understand the point your trying to make, but the wording is a bit off.

I think the better way to phrase it is we have a vision of what we want to see EMC be, and gameplay designs and experiences is something we "guide" and "form", but then we come to you the players to help us fine tune and tweak.

The shop system was brought to the public the way it was because it has some major changes to an existing system.
The PVP server design has been behind closed doors for alot for 1) It was me designing it, and wasn't to the polished state I now have it, and 2) it's not affecting existing users.

It's something we can build to how we want it to be, but take user feedback on how to make it better. Telling us to scrap the idea is not constructive feedback, the same with the shop system.

It's something we want to be apart of EMC, and we feel will be a great help to the future of EMC.

The EMC staff has gotten EMC to where it is today, why would we all of a sudden want to sink EMC?

The point of user feedback is not to let the users design the system, its for the users to provide more ideas and data to the designers (us) to convince us that idea is valid, and is going to make the system better.

Justin and myself are both developers with our hands in the gaming genre.

I was a lead developer for the http://windower.net project for many years, where we GREATLY shaped Final Fantasy 11 farther than the game developers (Square Enix) would take it.

The changes I brought to that game were drastic and very loved. I single handedly changed how end game players played the game. Sure there was opposition to my development just as there is here, but guess what? Nothing bad came out of it

I'm also plotting/designing my own MMO game I hope to one day launch... if I ever get time, which means I would need to break off of EMC to get back working on it.... :(

Justin also previously worked for a game company (not sure where he just now went to with his new job), so he also has experience with how games are built.

We have experience, you need to trust us that the overall goals we are going towards are good for EMC, and we want feedback to help us shape it for the better, but telling us to completely abort ideas due to worst case scenarios is not helpful.

As for the shop system, experience and hard evidence says fees are needed. This is something we NEED to do, even if the shop system was to never come into play. So ignore fees in relation to the shop system.

If you want to opt out, disable quickbuy on your shops and dont use the new system. You will still be listed, so players can find your shop and /shop visit you (if you use the new system commands to that level at least...)

But as far as the whole normal "Shop experience" will be the same for YOU, but don't be alarmed when you get less customers because you want to opt out and others have better prices than you.

Don't count the fees as part of the system, because they honestly are not totally related, just its the "appropriate time" to introduce them.
  13. Random map generator! HALL YES! Though, does in generate a different LAYOUT of buildings everytime, or make entirely new maps, with new buildings and such? The 2nd one, while quite a feat, seems unlikely.
  14. I am completely for PvP, however there is one thing I'd like to see with it. When you login to a non-PvP server, you get the message (or similar) "You have logged into an SMP, non-PvP server. PvP in anyway will result in a permaban - no ifs, no buts. If you wish to engage in PvP, please login to [server IP]" appear in chat, and when you login to a PvP server, you get the message "PvP is allowed on this server. However, this is not the case on all EMC servers. PvP on a non-PvP server will result in a permaban". That way, people can't use the excuse that they didn't know.

  15. It'll be the overall same appearence, but the layout, building design and everything will be different every match...
    Example:

Ignore the wild on the right, that will be disabled for our maps.

IE: 1 match could have 5 skyscrapers, the next have none, and every building design/style/placement will be different each match.

  16. That is a good idea and very easy to do. Will very likely happen.

  17. Unfortunately I am on my phone. And wordy posts like aikars are notprudent or possible :p but I'm sure the point of my reply was made regardless.
  18. You have made my day. Cities. Thank you.
  19. I suppose now Aikar has clarified what he is planning it sounds ok and shouldn't damage EMC so long as precautions like what JackBiggin suggested are put in place. Am I right in thinking player names are also not displayed too? If so then I guess it won't be too bad. Just a shame EMC can't say "No Pvp Anywhere" any more. :(

On a side note, will it all be city generations or will there be other 'themes' like caves? dungeons? nether? I don't know the possibilities are endless.
  20. "No PVP Anywhere" still applies to all our SMP servers so you can still say that if you plan on only using those and never doing PVP. PVP isn't really a bad thing. It's just when people try to mix PVP with SMP that things get bad, which is why we're handling both completely separate, which they should be. :)
