Before joining an event you often want to experience an event to see what's it all about. And in my opinion this doesn't help: Why can't we oversee things anymore? This makes it impossible to follow the player(s) you're rooting for. And on that subject I also didn't enjoy staff members advertising cheating. "It's not cheating if I don't win?". Give me a break here.... And that is not an attack on said anonymous staff member but the design of the whole lot. There were staff members (green) all over. I realize that the majority of players apparently don't think this through but... if a regular staff member can start this event and other regular staff members can play.. would you guys care to explain to me how this is still a fair game? If a staff member can run such a game what guarantees do I have that a participating staff members can't influence the game? A feeling that got seriously fed when a staff member plain out told me: "It's not cheating if I don't win". The heck?! (for the record: I know that said member was probably joking.. but how can I be sure?). I guess running games is above senior staff now? And why is that? There used to be a time when EMC tried hard to make sure that any thoughts of bias or possible foul play were ruled out easily. I guess those times have gone. Don't get me wrong here... plenty of players enjoyed themselves and all the more power to you. But anyone who thinks this stuff through will realize all the bias and possibilities for foul play. As mentioned: a staff member basiclally going "it's not cheating if I don't get caught"? It was all in good fun, I admit, but think about the consequences. Weren't moderators supposed to be treated like regular players? If a regular player did this..... Devaluation of EMC if you ask me. And no: I'm sad to write all this.
I do not think EMC has the resources to do that. Kryssy has mentioned it in another thread (so I will keep this short), but they do not have a large development team. Therefore, a lot of EMC stays "as-is". Though, based on her posts in another thread, she has stated that they are working on fixing that.
Hm, your frustration is great. I can't give full thoughts on the issue at hand, as I don't know what event this was, and what it entails. But it would be nice if there were better options for spectating, of course (can't you walk on top of the arena?).
The command blocks have a hard time differentiating for the automatic countdown of players if you are on top. I'll look into the specific limits and see what I can do to maybe at least make the sides more open . As for the comment about mods running the event and other mods participating, I'm never going to keep mods from playing an event unless there is an actual advantage they have. They are players too. Firefloor they have no advantage because it's randomized. I could even technically play and run it at the same time, and have offered bonus versions sometimes where my alts stand on specific blocks and a special prize is given if they stay standing. Should do that again sometime soon... The quote you used I would like to know who said it so that I can get full context though.
As Krysyy, said, this is a technical limitation, not an actual choice. When the command blocks were setup that detect the number of players in the Firefloor arena, they also read if any players are standing on top of the arena. This is an issue with the original design and not some choice that somebody made. I knew of this issue when I was hosting the event and I could have fixed it a long time ago. While a few players did ask for it, it wasn't something that was a show-stopper, necessarily. I only had so much time I could dedicate to EMC events though, so I just left it alone. So in a sense, you could blame me for not fixing it if you like I'd like to point out that nothing has actually changed here. Since Games world has been released, regular staff have been able to run the Firefloor event. In fact, I ran Firefloor many times before I even got the SS promotion, iirc (It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I did xD) So, nothing here has changed except for regular staff hosting the event more often than SS. While I guess I can understand your reservations, nothing has changed about this though. EMC trusts it staff with abilities far beyond just being able to run "Firefloor," which, by the way, is probably one of the most difficult events to cheat at. Not only is the system entirely random, it's pretty much entirely automated. There's not much a staff member could do to influence that event. Well, I'd like to point out here that just because an event that used to be ran by SS, is now being ran mostly by reg staff, does not then mean that running events are "above senior staff." In my opinion, that's a really silly claim to make and you actually have no justification for it. Rather, a more accurate statement would be that the Senior Staff currently on EMC don't have time to host events. I left EMC because I didn't have the time to host events and be involved like I used to. While that was a personal choice of mine, Krysyy does afford every staff member the opportunity to take a break from EMC and retain their staff title while they do. Any issues with this though, are unrelated to regular staff hosting events. [/quote] What consequences? In my opinion, the staff member that made that comment likely thought that the entire conversation was a joke. While I wasn't there, I know that personally if any player were to ask if I could potentially cheat at an event, I would assume it to be a joke at first. These are the EMC staff we're talking about. Not some random player that is looking for their chance to win an event. The staff team is just there to have fun and hang out with the players. Telling staff that they can't enjoy an event with the playerbase because there is a possibility that they might cheat is shortsighted. Any risk there may be of a staff member abusing their abilities to cheat at an event is far outweighed by the benefits of having staff spend time with EMC's players. EMC is made great not by our inscrutable staff who run things with an iron fist - but by our community of players and staff who play together and hang out together. If anything, the fact that there were multiple staff members at that event spending time with our players only improves EMC and the value it brings to the players.
This was Firefloor? Why didn't you say so, Shell? That is a very common and well-known event, and knowing that might have helped the people reading this thread... I wonder what you'll say when you get back to this at day or evening, as while your apparent main point (it being nice to be able to spectate at firefloor from the top of the arena) is valid, 80% of your post seems to be fuelled only by frustration about a single comment made in jest.
Agreed with Sheluser. Being able to have the ability to walk on that top area would be great, and especially since it's literally already barrier blocks. Players have accidentally glitched and got on top of it too, and I see no way in how we cant have access to walk on top. Also those pillars on the glass walls should be removed entirely. It's harder to see and is just an annoyance. Great post shel, even though no one agrees with you and everyone likes the comments of the people who disagree with you, I think you're right.
You only replied to the first 2 paragraphs of 11, though. I think everyone who has replied so far agrees with what would appear to be the purpose of the thread, considering the title. However, most (80%+) of the OP is actually about an unrelated, seemingly rather minor frustration. That's why I think it's not a great post at all.
Not... my choice of words. Personally, I would have said: Though that's just me. All in honesty, he does have quite a bad habit of making quite long posts... :s
It is true... He usually makes very long posts. I've seen some quite substantive posts in the past that were very good, but... this just happens to not be one of them, unfortunately.
Okay let's back off shell a bit. They made a post addressing something he felt. Staff and others have made some posts either disagreeing or agreeing with them. Let's keep things about the topic and not the player.
