Video Game Music Appreciation

  1. Awesome! Thanks for the verification guys, because I love those games that use a form of FM Synthesis or the chiptune sounds.

(I could list all of the systems I like that have game soundtracks that I like, but it'd make my post much much longer than I think any of us would want it to be. lol)

I'm not against streamed audio, but they usually have lyrics, which I do not find that appealing to me...

  2. Check out the artist Les Friction, they'll change your mind ;)
  3. I'm not sure if you're right, to be honest. I was trying to argue, but I'm getting stuck in the terms, as I'm not sure how to differentiate things from each other. But two of my favourite soundtracks couldn't be nearly as great as they are without 'streamed audio', and they don't contain lyrics (Simcity 3000 and Super Mario Galaxy).
  4. I made a video containing my 15 favourite themes from credits/staff rolls. :)
It's a very long video, but you don't need to watch it all in one go! ;) Also, you could do something else on the side, but it could be nice to still have the video displayed on a screen, as there are many comments that appear at certain points in the video. :)

  5. I like this! It's nice just to have playing in the background

  6. There's quite a lot of variation in it, isn't there? It's interesting how there are so different approaches to a staff roll piece. Laid-back, upbeat, emotional, epic, et cetera...

  9. I started replaying Doom recently. You know, everyone's favourite game about demons from hell getting stuck on Mars with the best soldier the world has ever known.

IMO the best video game soundtrack I've ever heard in terms of how good it is/its blending into the action.

    Main Menu/Hellwalker: https://youtu.be/zRkA1xYBZBQ

Honestly I let that play all the way through before I start the game.

Game's intro/At Doom's Gate (missing the shotgun click that completes the last 2 chords though, sad): https://youtu.be/Jly9qp40rfw

Original At Doom's Gate from the 1997 game: https://youtu.be/BSsfjHCFosw

    Combat music/Flesh & Metal: https://youtu.be/KqMQsxbpS4U

Cyberdemon boss fight/Cyberdemon (with one of the coolest easter eggs of all time): https://youtu.be/8v_o8AWu2N4

Anyway yeah me likey and I thought I'd share here.

  10. This game was published in 1996 for the Game Boy, and in 1999 for the Game Boy Color. It's the first soundtrack by Alberto José González I write about.
I enjoyed this soundtrack so much that I arranged it for piano, in its entirety. The first track I did was the Game Over theme, so I'll let you hear that first.

Doesn't it sound beautiful? The melody is great, and it sounds great on piano, but besides that there's also the very nice sounds, the dynamics (mainly the bass growing and fading), the vibrato on the lead, and the subtle echo effect.

The second track I attempted is a special snowflake: it actually wasn't composed for the game, but made earlier, on an Amiga. This track's original name is Uncle John's Tale, but on YouTube it is referred to as 'Train', as that's the first level it plays in. This track is actually used in 3 different levels, all of them being autoscrollers, so you'll have something nice to listen to while waiting for the level to progress! ;)

It starts fairly modest, but also fairly bouncy, and certainly fun. But the most interesting part is at the end, where the melody becomes quite fast and really cool. :D

The soundtrack's got some fast themes, but also some slower ones. I love this one.

When listening to them isolated, the melody and the bass are so interesting and fun! This was probably the hardest theme to learn for me, as it's not the most predictable of songs. But it's so enjoyable when you learn it! And I was talking about the bass and lead melody in isolation. But there's more to the song! Like in almost all González' tracks, there are fun arpeggio chords throughout the tune, adding as always. But next to that there's even a subtle but interesting melody in the back! One last thing I like about this tune is how it's got three distinct parts, that are all well-developed, and flow into each other.

My personal favourite from the game is (currently) the theme from the last level in the game.

The track starts off in a very good way with a catchy melody and rhythm. After that parts repeats once, a very different part starts, where the lead melody gets played by a high-pitched flute, playing some very simple intervals. What follows however, is very interesting play between the bass and the lead melody, now down low again! Lastly, the fourth part to the song, the flute takes over again, now playing some more bold melodies, which go greatly with the bass, which is still the same as the previous time. And of course, you will hear the signature arpeggio chords again!

Then finally for this post, one track I should definitely share is the credits theme. Quoting Mr. González:
And for good reason, as it is quite amazing!

Enjoy. :) (no analysis here, although there are some comments in this video)

I hope you will check out the rest of the soundtrack, as there are more great tracks!! I arranged all of it for good reason. ;) (I might edit in a link to the piano covers once I've performed and uploaded them!)
This is probably the best version of the soundtrack on YouTube. It sounds significantly better than the one I used for arranging (and it's the one I've used in this post).
  11. may i suggest the pokemon mystery dungeon gates to infinity + PSMD soundtracks

adding 1fn1n1ty's remixes of some the tracks it's legendary

    pun not intended

  12. I found a video of a long ago NES bootleg of Sonic the Hedgehog. The original game was a mess with really bad colors selected for parts of the game, and very "bootleg" music. Someone had too much time on their hands because they went back and actually made the music sound good! Of course the rest of the game is still a bootleg, but nevertheless, I give this guy respect for doing this!

  13. Super Mario Galaxy - Bouy base galaxy theme

    Full Celeste soundtrack

Celeste is honestly one of the best games I have played in a long time, try it out if you can!

  14. Oh, interesting! That's my favourite from the soundtrack too. Maybe I'll write about it some day.

Thanks for recommending Celeste, but I won't get a Switch soon, so/and it will be a while until I play it, probably!

  17. Somehow my own thread got unwatched! Haha.
Really liking a lot of this music - quite the variety as well. The pokemon games have always held a special spot for me with their upbeat tones, with the same being true for games like Mario. Skyrim is good for background studying or something similar, in my opinion.
I'll have to check out Celeste!
  18. Yes, that is very good! And well-known too, so yeah, it's curious that it hadn't been mentioned yet!
  19. Pretty sure it's on steam!
