[SUGGESTION] Reduce Adverts

Discussion in 'Suggestion Box Archives' started by Aliyaxoxo, Jun 15, 2017.

  1. Ok so I know this has been suggested before by Finch, but seriously this is really annoying.

We on EMC have an advertisement that is not only multicolored, but also takes up 6 lines of chat, AND literally all it tells me is that EMC has 10 servers. Most people know this already, so why can't we shorten this down a few lines? It doesn't need to take up so much space in chat, it makes them way too spam-my. And this isn't the only advertisement like this, most are relatively understood already, and like I said before, they're way to spam-my
  2. This has been suggested a few times, and as with every one, I give a +1 (even if I didn't actually say so)
  3. I agree. Most advertisements are for the Empire's social media or an event broadcast. They take 1 line - 3 lines at tops. If it's busy and there's people advertising their mall, Casino etc it could get very messy. Especially if you're having a conversation and your message gets wiped off screen by an advertisement. +1
    Zrugite and EmpireMall like this.
  4. This is a temporary broadcast, set up just this morning to encourage multiple server interaction for players. We currently have no way to limit the broadcasts to only newer players, so we decided to do this for a week and see if it made a difference for those players confused when there are low numbers online. It's the beginning of summer so we get a lot at weird hours. For this reason it is meant to stand out so it has the extra spaces.

Chickeneer is working on a code fix that will replace this broadcast need. It's only once every 2 hours for a week until then.

As for other broadcasts, I think there are only 2 others live. One being the voting (not going away) and the other being social media info. Servers make messages in-game all the time in order to highlight certain things for players. If you are on all the time, then you'll see them more, but not everyone has that ability and we can't do once per day. It's meant to stand out and be noticed, not fade into chat.
  5. Would it not be possible to create a permission group for new players adding a permission to see the new broadcast? If you show up on /newplayers you see the broadcast until you no longer show up on /newplayers then you won't see the broadcast anymore. After the duration of showing up on /newplayers you would move to the normal group and you wouldn't see the broadcast anymore.

I may be wrong but that seems like an easy task. It should stop the older/more experienced players from seeing the broadcast and being annoyed by it (If it's even possible).

  6. Asked for it many times. Something prevents it currently.

Along with something to detect if you voted already and stop the vote one from showing up.

  7. I feel that this should have been there from the start, Then you could have targeted broadcasts but if there's something in the way I guess it's not possible until that obstacle has been cleared?
  8. Yeah having them appear to only certain permission groups would be great. The whole system would likely have to be re coded though. It's OLD!

  9. Uh oh. Some pressure to get that done now xD
  10. In my defense, you offered =P

  11. Why can we not send in a massive spam of them ONLY when a player joins? Anytime I player disconnects then reconnects, they get the broadcast, and that's it, no interference with gameplay.

  12. Can you elaborate further on this statement? I'm not sure I understand how you feel the broadcasts are interfering with gameplay.

  13. It's extremely distracting
  14. I think this does happen already...I'll vote and it goes away.

  15. How is it distracting? I get distracted quite easily, but these messages don't distract me at all. To be perfectly honest, I find the event messages much more "annoying" than these, since they are sent quite often, and are done much more excessively. I understand why though, so I just "deal with it", it's not that big of an annoyance for me.
  16. Is everyones chatbox that big? It looks really big to me but maybe im just remembering it wrong or theres a setting or something... idk?

But anyway I dont get why its such a big deal, I find them pretty easy to ignore if I dont want to read them and even when im reading announcements it takes like 2 seconds.
  17. I think that's an altered chat box. (Not too sure) but there is a setting go to Options > Chat Settings and there's a few options.
They're not distracting at all. I may stop and read one but it takes a literal 10 seconds. The only time a 6 line broadcast would annoy me would be if I was PM'ing someone and their recent sent message got wiped off screen by it.
  18. -1

I think this advertisement was a very good call for EMC to make, also because I've somewhat seen the effects of said broadcast. Just because we all know about the different SMP's doesn't mean a new player also does. It gets mentioned in the tutorial, but only briefly if I remember correctly. So this could be a good wake up call for those new(er) players.

    +1

I also agree that there are times when you'd rather turn the whole thing off. Been there myself a few times too. Would be very cool if those broadcasts could be done through a channel which people could then turn on or off as they please.

But in general I'm indecisive. It hasn't reached a point where I really started disliking the ads. Also... Not fully related but do keep in mind that EMC is quite mild when it comes to in-game advertisements. I've heard and seen servers where there's more or less constant advertisement for voting, buying in-game items, more voting, an event which is already long over, another ad. for the main shop, and something about the rules. Basically you'd get an ad. almost every 5 minutes, while the server is pretty much nearly empty (5 - 10 players).

Unrelated, but "it could be much worse" is still something to keep in mind I think.
  19. I think this is player to player... I do not mind @e, these message, general @l or @t discussions. I am able to block that out when I want or get involved when I want. However, since I have 5 in my family on the same server I know that one of my kids and my wife both are completely bothered by this and it is an annoyance to them for pretty much all chats. So while it does not bother me, I think the review of possible options and minimizing these is not a bad idea.

Though, as we are all really just guests of EMC remember that it is only through donations, volunteers, new players, and advertising that the server exists. So to expect nothing to ever come through may be a bit unfair to the staff and owner.
