  2. I think you've massively misinterpreted what the OP says.

  3. Leave it up to an Empire Mall to know their diamonds :D

That means I need to have a good talk with GripCEO, seems he has been holding back on 16 diamonds then. (Either that or I forgot completely about it, but I like my version better).

I think it's fine the way it is. Because if a player wants money then they might start trying to sell those diamonds. This could be a sure way to get them to find player shops. I think it's even a better way to persuade them to go out looking so that they can sell them than to merely give them rupees to buy stuff.

New players & freebies... I have a bit of a history with that :D

Every once in a while you come across a new player of who you think that they're going to be enjoying themselves and will make a really nice addition to the server you're on. When that happens I often can't help myself but to drop my own version of a "starters goodie bag" on them. This usually consists of all available sapplings (4 for the bigger trees), some chorus flower + end stones, some building materials and some optional stuff (varies on my mood): a beacon or nether star, some expensive blocks (gold, emerald, diamond), a vault voucher, a promo (very, very, VERY seldomly, only happened once so far) and any other nice things I can think of. Oh right: last time I dropped a mansion treasure map.

I've had very different results. In fact, my policy has changed over the years in that I now try to restrain myself from doing this on a new players first day. I wait a few days and then...

Because trust me: cool stuff is no guarantee that the new player will actually stay.

This happened on SMP1 last year: I was greeting a new (talkative!) player on SMP1 and he was really busy! He had already used his starting materials to lay out a nice house design and yeah, that looked promising! When I arrived I noticed and immediately felt the urge "goodie bag". But it seems I'm not the only one on the Empire who has those ideas from time to time, there were 2 - 3 other players (sorry, I don't recall the names) who had the same idea as I had.

That turned into a mini giving competition :D Yes, we were stupid (we all agreed to that amongst ourselves) but hey; it's not every day where you get to meet a new player who's actually busy doing stuff. Hmm, come to think of it... ;)

That new player was most definitely on of the richest new players on the Empire. We went crazy, I think someone even threw some gold & diamond blocks at him, I threw a promo and other stuff... yah, crazy. "because we could".

Now... I don't keep close taps on SMP1 but to my knowledge this player left and was never seen again :D

I know a lot of beacons which live in the realms of the derelict :D

But yeah... I think it's fine the way it is.

  4. I don't think it should be a question of Diamonds or no Diamonds. I think we should instead consider how we can start a player out that is most successful. I do not think Diamonds are necessary for that, but if they are, that is fine too.

I've met plenty of people here who were able to take whatever they started with and make it work. The items maybe saved time for them but were not critical to their enjoyment of their time here. I've met some who did not have the patience to work toward goals or tried to use shortcuts to get things without actually mining or gathering them. I don't think anything we start them with helps really and maybe encourages their behavior.

I've also met discouraged players who were reluctant to go out of Town because they always seemed to have unfortunate things happen to them. They fell in Lava, went mining without food, or picked losing fights with mobs, then couldn't find their items after they died. A lot of this was lack of knowledge and experience. I think these cases are where starter items could make a difference.

I think they need guidance rather than items though and Diamonds are meant to be a pinnacle crafting material. I think we are giving them in some cases to players who are not ready to use them and for the rest it doesn't matter. Whatever we start players with, it should be helpful but not so much that it discourages them from desiring more or makes them feel that a setback like dying is a catastrophe like higher end items might.

Someone recently suggested putting starting items on Residences and I like that idea because it encourages a beginner to earn their starting items in a controlled way rather than giving items to them then leaving them with a choice of Town or Waste to survive. I am pretty sure that when I started I got iron armor and a pick, some bread, and 1500R. I remember standing on my plot of dirt and thinking of what I needed to get on my first mining trip: Seeds, Saplings, iron for a couple of Water Buckets...

I think a couple of trees, some Grass, a Stone outcrop with enough Iron and Coal Ore under it to make some armor and tools, and instructions on how to get to the Waste and back to Town would be better than handing out crafted items like we have been doing.

Rather than: "Here's some stuff. Good luck.", I think it would encourage players to think along a path more like I did on my first night: "Ok. I've mined this stuff and crafted armor and a pick. Now I need to make some Bread and figure out how to get to the Waste.".
  5. lol hahah now that was funny!! you had me laughing here. ohh sorry to break the conversation carry on

  6. Nope, im not sure i think u get 5 diamonds when u start, and can get like 16 by finding secrets in tutorial :)
  7. I clearly remember there were daimonds in the chest when I claimed my first res after I joined.
  8. Mustve changed, its empty now, i have had many alts and got some no less than a month ago on emc and the chest is empty, some reses dont even have the sign and chests, everything appears in your inventory. Im thinking of getting a new alt soon so i may be able to clarify this.
  9. I think it was me u and runder, i remeber when he chucked like an SC of chicken eggs at the newplayer lol :D

Let me also add shel (not to brag :p) i had 100k and 3dcs of promos 2 weeks into emc :p funny thing is i was reported for duplicateing multiple times when id advertise and some guy would see a 2 week old player was richer than them xD (and i surprisingly didnt recive much help, fbuilders gave me a meteor bow but thats about it :p)

  10. Ok so I finished the tutorial like 3 days ago on an account, and skipped all the easter eggs. I got 16 diamonds.

  11. Well 1/4 a stack of diamonds is a bit, i think it should be lowered to 6-10 if not completely removed
  12. I never knew 16 diamonds was a economic problem to big businesses. Its not even enough to make an armor set. 16 diamonds for a new player are used up supremely fast. They will be buying diamonds from shops in no time. Remember, they don't have enchants on these diamond picks they craft. Much of their picks are destroyed in the cobble mining process. So unless cobblestone/stone is your business. Then there isn't much to worry about.

  13. It's been this way since we last updated tutorial, which was ages ago. The diamond amount was thought of as a way to give the player enough to craft some items, but not enough for a full set. Why is this discussion just now coming up? Is there something major that I'm missing that happened?
  14. I think azoundria is just worried that the thrill of mining is taken away from newplayers because of the starter diamonds.
  15. I don't think it comes up much in conversation due to it being a one time event on your join day. I would say that most people largely forget about what they had gotten by the time they come join the forums.

But, since /shop is closing and discussion has been happening over how it affected new players, somehow the starter items got brought up. Now with it brought up, I think people are realizing/debating how unnecessary it is to give diamonds, in any amount.
