  1. I definitely think it's absolutely awesome to give new players basic tools, food, torches, saplings, bone meal, shears, a horse, chests, maybe a bucket of lava and water... All these are things that help them get started. The last thing we want is a new player who can't figure out how to get something they absolutely need and would normally get pretty easily in vanilla Minecraft, end up feeling frustrated/helpless and stomping off to the void.

Diamonds are different. You don't NEED them. You can do almost everything in Minecraft without them. You can mine, build, and explore. The only thing diamonds are absolutely needed for is obsidian, and even that you can get by without. In every other case, it's a convenience.

In the vanilla game, it takes hours to acquire them. Remember when you first played Minecraft, how long it took to get them and all the adventures you had in the process? Remember how big of a deal it was to find your first diamonds, and how excited you were when you finally got deep underground to a vein and took your iron pickaxe to finally get that life-altering moment of revelation. (Assuming they weren't next to lava like my first diamonds were - in which case I was positively devastated and that moment was postponed until the next vein I found.)

Granted, it isn't quite as exciting or meaningful the second time you do it, or the third time, and most players who join Empire Minecraft definitely have some past experience with the game. But I'm sure you can admit, there is definitely still a good feeling to finally getting your first diamonds every time you play. And I'm sure you'll admit that even though getting free diamonds is nice, it doesn't even come remotely close to the great feeling you get when you actually mastered some challenges and got them through your own blood, sweat, and tears. :p

The possibility of buying diamonds from a player shop or voting for them doesn't take away from the fundamental feeling or concept of acquiring them. Whether a player goes mining in the wasteland, buys from a player shop, or votes, it has a huge impact and it's definitely something we want to encourage. Imagine trying to live life on EMC without understanding how shop signs work or how to get out to the wasteland or things like that. This is reality for a lot of new players. Whether acquiring diamonds gives them something to do so they stay around a bit longer and learn these skills, or whether it is the reason they learned to use shops or vote, it's a huge benefit to EMC as a whole.

So really, there are two choices:
We can hand every new player free diamonds, thus they skip all the adventures and learning and engagement they'd do to acquire them.

    -or-
We can let new players acquire their first diamonds in whatever way they end up doing, gaining knowledge and experience and possibly making new friends along the way. We can have them feel the sense of accomplishment when they finally get their first diamonds. And we can benefit from the higher likelihood they stick around because of everything they got in the process.
  2. Sooo... you're saying we shouldn't give diamonds to new players? Or let buy them for say? And make them work for them? This doesnt seem fair to new players because older members don't have to work for theirs.

  3. New players are given diamonds now? When did that happen?
  4. I sort of agree as when myself and many other older players joined the empire we got.. bread I think? Just food and wood maybe.. and now new players are given armour, tools, animals, money and many more resources. And now with the ware lands it's even easier to gather the items you need.

On the other hand.. a lot of other servers offer 'starter kits' I guess you could call them. They might be put off as EMC seems a little harder to get into?

Either way this is only my opinion. I'm drawn in the middle at the moment. I can see both sides?
  5. Been that way since I've joined in summer of 2014
  6. You can get by without diamonds to make a netherportal, there's a really neat trick to make one with 14 buckets of lava and a water bucket. +1,
Actually older players had to work to get to the point where they could just buy diamonds when they need them or be on a super high vote streak.
  7. But why MAKE them work. They have rupees when they start, they can spend them if they want, on what they want.

  8. I don't recall getting diamonds, but I haven't taken the tutorial in a long time. I probably just don't remember.
  9. What I get out of this thread is you want new players to have to find their diamonds. I am good with that, but why not also take away their free 1200 rupees as well? It's been a while since I joined and I think that's what I got. Not really sure what new players get. That way they can't buy the diamonds they have to go find them like most of us do. I can't help but notice the op also has malls selling diamonds and buying them I believe. I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong. Are sells down or are too many people selling you too many diamonds? Why does it really matter if you give people a few diamonds? How many do new players get? As it has been so long since I was new I don't really know. Just my opinion btw.

  10. I think its up to the player whos helping them. I give diamonds away to new players all the time but not to all new players. it really for me depends on the new player. some new players I will even give away extremely great enchanted tools to give them a boost. diamonds arent hard to come buy in EMC and you can by them for as low as 25 - 50 r at some shops

  11. Gotta disagree here. Those free diamonds I got when I joined came in very handy for crafting a diamond pick. Besides we're talking about 16 diamonds here. Nothing game breaking. You would get more from just voting for a week.
  12. They should have been in the chest thst spawns on your res.
  13. Where is this coming from? You get diamonds from voting too. Do you want that taken away as well?

It's not like it's a boat load of diamonds. I think it's 16 and that's only after you register your email for the forums. Plus aren't shops also stopping newbies from that adventure of coming across some diamond ore?

  14. When I joined there was way less items then now. I think it's good with the items as then they don't start out with nothing. diamonds, even though it's 16 they can make tools, sell or keep them. It's up to them. Some new players get mad when they come on and see everyone with Diamond everything. if we take theirs away they won't like the community as much.

I would type more but I am on my cell phone.

  15. I personally think it's more fun to earn the things you have by going out and finding them. However, I can't ever see that happening on here because (a lot of) people just want things given to them and don't want to put the effort into going out to get them. So, EMC isn't going to risk losing new players by actually making them work for something.
  16. Ill cast my two cents in on this discussion. I can understand your thoughts behind this, I get it. But like you've already stated everyone who joins the Empire have already played mc before hand. So making new players pretty much start over will defiently drive them to boredom rather quickly. Meeting people and making friends will happen as soon as they join the town and everyone greets them. While its true most people play mc to build and be creative and yes gather, some people play online just to meet people and make friends and i dont think they would want to keep asking people for diamond pics and be a burden. And like another player stated, the diamonds they get in the begining will not alter emc.
  17. When I was young I had to walk a thousand blocks just to see a chicken. Young people today just fly there on their high falutin elytras. What is the world coming to. jk.

  18. I don't know about everyone else, but your argument is making me more in favor for the suggestion. I do in fact believe people should work for things. Shocking. :p It should also be noted that OP doesn't discourage people from buying diamonds.

It was stated in the /shop closing thread that a majority of its customers were new players who didn't know better. It could be that they are given diamonds for free in order to stop them from blowing all their rupees on overpriced items. But, given that /shop is closing, it may be more beneficial to take diamonds out of their freebie package. It will encourage people to go out and find player shops and the wastes sooner after the tutorial than later. This means that they will be more likely to remember the details, and we won't lose those shy members who are afraid to look stupid by asking questions.

Granted, we will lose those members who cry when they don't get free diamonds with their starter gear, but I think that is for the greater good.
  19. We don't have to work for ours? Please do explain. Because last I checked my several chests full of diamonds didn't just appear on my residence.

At the start you get about 20k. It's a lot and I don't know why it's necessary. This is, of course, including a refferal and joining forums.

The passive aggressive feel in this post was great <3
  20. I could be mistaken but I think there's a small misunderstanding. As far as I know new players don't get free diamonds, they get some starting gear and a few rupees but that's it. Basically they get wooden planks, spawn eggs, starter tools & armor, soulbound torches, but that roughly covers it. I'm somewhat sure because I specifically kept the whole kit in GripCEO's /vault.

However, they can get their hands on free stuff (including diamonds) by finding the easter eggs in the tutorial.

Side note: is it possible that this suggestion got triggered by your comments on the EMC Shop closing thread?

I ask this because when Krysyy & ThaKloned were talking about things for a new player they were talking about the ability to buy those from the quick shop. You know: the pillar with shop signs on most outposts. See Krysyy's post and the one below it.

So I can't help wonder if there is a misunderstanding here.
