I am thinking about adding a castle near a village and am looking for inspiration? Do you have a book or movie that has inspired one of your builds? Please let me know. I am currently reading Michael Sullivan's Legends of the First Empire series and R. A. Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt series. Nothing is jumping out at me yet, but I thoroughly enjoy the books.
I have always enjoyed big blocky structures. With minimalistic spaces inside, dull or a slight manufactured facility feel. I want to walk in and find the vast scale of things surrounded by a muted environment. Limited colors so that the color it does have pops. I may not be good at translating it with my builds, but I am happy with the outcomes I build.
Andelkrag from Prince Valiant is always a nice model, just google it. Would work fine with the copper in 1.17 as well. The castles in Imrryr from the stories of Elric of Melniboné is always a favourite as well. Tall, jagged and slender spires.
I visited York Cathedral in early 2019. It looks like crap on the inside tbh, like most Anglican cathedrals, but the outside is just the pinnacle of gothic architecture and I love that vibe. It's also massive - I backed up the street as far as I could and I still couldn't fit the entire thing in my field of view. It was quite awe-inspiring. Liverpool Cathedral (the Catholic one). My dad got confirmed there and my parents got married in it, so I saw it in a picture of him and in my parent's wedding video when I was growing up, and Liverpool is where I'm from I've always walked/drove past it whenever I'm in that area. I finally went inside it in October last year and while the outside isn't as impressive as York Cathedral (it has this modern architecture style I've grown to hate), the inside felt very.... decadent, futuristic (almost Blade Runner-y). Feels kind of homely too - the congregation for Catholics, a minority and historically persecuted group in the UK, in the UK's only Catholic city. Loved it. Beyond that I often find myself building in Japanese architectural styles, particularly Shinto shrines. I look to religious buildings, pretty much lol As for drawing inspiration from fictional worlds: Bloodborne and, depending on the biome, I like recreating that Studio Ghibli ‘mundane looks beautiful’ vibe
I take a lot of inspiration from gothic and baroque architecture. Since 2018 I have been working on recreating the Duomo of Milan in Minecraft. I have also taken inspiration from Alice in Wonderland for the 2020 Easter build, Easter Wonderland. khixan created a beautiful Queen of Hearts castle. A few residences on EMC that I visit for inspiration are jennypoo10-3 on SMP2 and Eviltoade's spawn residence on Utopia. If you haven't seen them before, go check them out!
