Using past simple instead of past perfect

  1. Also, note how "I shoulda went sooner," or similar phrases, are incorrect in most forms of English -- however, it could be grammatically correct in a specific dialect.

  2. I just heard a Brit on The Retro Hour Podcast say "We've not really spoke about it too much". So yeah, can confirm with SoulPunisher that it happens there too. ;)
  3. Another update: I've been reading books by Francess Hodgson Burnett, from the late 19th century, and in there working class people use the same construction! So it appears that it has been around for a long time. Which also suggests to me that in prescriptive English use, it will be considered 'incorrect' for a long time to come, if not forever.
    I wonder if this also occurs in Shakespeare, now... o.(o)
