[Suggestion] changelog command

Discussion in 'Suggestion Box Archives' started by Joy_the_Miner, Jul 7, 2020.

  1. I've been on another Minecraft server (shall remain nameless) where there was this command:

    Code:
    /changelog
It could be ran in-game within the chat window. It did not specify every tiny detail of every update, as to save space within the in-game chat, but it mentioned the most notable major changes in the update the server had recently gone through.

    Food for thought perhaps? :)

  2. I have made your suggestion its own thread.

  3. Thanks so much my guy, I really appreciate it! ^^
  4. +1

"wait you can vault shulkers now??", etc.

Also would help if these forum posts were pinned to the front page.

  5. Chickeneer? What say you about HazardousCode's post? :3c
  6. I have nothing to add at this time.
  7. Does the server in question have a website? I think the web is a much better place for this. But I suppose one might say "Why not both?". Well, (at least) two changelogs would have to be written for each update, one optimised for a web page and one optimised for Minecraft chat. It might be worth it, but I'm not sure.
  8. It could just have just a few basic points listed and say "Go to emc.gs/t/98765 for the full changelog" at the end. What would make it onto the changelog, I'm not quite sure, as some people might consider something a minor change and other people a major change.

  9. Most notable significant major changes since the previous update. Like my original post says. ;)

Though, a full changelog, if staff feels is necessary, could be posted somewhere online and at the bottom of the chat in-game, could be a link to the online changelog with every change? 🤔

  10. Maybe someone from the contribution team could write the chat version based on the full version. :)

  11. Far too complicated to do this and update in-game command to show for every update. Fyi will not happen.

  12. Kryssy, would you say that my idea is not possible/practical to do at all?

If that's the case, you can go ahead and close this thread. :)
  13. The rewrite part of 607's comment is what I was mentioning. Honestly though, if people want to know about updates, they can check the most recent development release threads on the right side of the front page at any time.

Idk if this would really be that beneficial for the amount of work required.
  14. The only problem is that not all new players access the EMC Forums, or the EMC website. They're more likely to get onto the EMC Discord and that's it. --- I don't have specific figures on "how many", but I have encountered some in the past who were not interested in the EMC forums, at all. If they're not interested in the EMC website, they're not going to see the development thread.

My idea is a simpler form of what Lianail had on his thread, it simply removes the "email issue" and has a short list of notable changes in the most recent update, which would be accessible with he "/changlog" command. --- That's where my idea for a link at the end of the short list in the in-game chat to give players the option if they choose to see what all the changes are. (That way they don't have to read through a book's worth of text on the in-game chat. ;) )

  15. If they aren't interested in the EMC website, they are likely not interested in a changelog. The people who care about such things are on the forums for a reason.

Not saying it won't happen, but target audience is low.

  16. I didn't even know the change threads were on the front page. When we updated from 1.12, people were in chat bickering about the new additions and telling people to read the update threads, but it was just, well, chaos. A command that links to that thread isn't too far out there in a reasonable expectation, I think.

Maybe changelog.emc.gs leads to the most current thread or just the appropriate section of the forums, and that link is also accessible via /changelog.

  17. Hm, I don't see how involving the contribution team would increase the complexity much. Someone could be assigned to it and it could be handled through one pm from chickeneer and one pm to chickeneer. Yes, if chickeneer or Aikar were to write it in general it would probably happen faster, but I would suppose that they would rather minimise time spent on superfluous documentation.
Anyway, I don't care about this, so you don't have to bother explaining if you don't feel like it. :p
