With the reborn interest in this event and now that I am trained in staff events this will be making a return! I am going away this coming friday but will see if someone can fill in for me. Or I may do this Thursday at the same time if people are willing to do so.
This is always a fun event when we can actually get a group together. Group mining perks ROCK! It's really hard to carve out a couple hours of time on any night, but I always check in on this topic when I see activity and hope to join in. We need a mining channel or group of some type, like the /staff command, so that people who are mining can find each other no matter what time or what server they call home.
Yeah, I'm not necessarily married to Friday, and can do this on really any day of the week, generally speaking. Now that this is a watched thread, I'll be sure to keep track. Hope to join in and be joined for some good mining!
Okay, this is perfect. I am now married to Friday (for this week, anyway). The Wastelands are being reset at 8:00pm EMC time Friday night, and this, to me, seems to create a perfect opportunity for Friday Night Miners. I haven't been to one of these yet, so I don't know how structured it is (do we all follow samsimx, stay close together, etc.), but I'd like to suggest that we systematically tear down the End Portal Strongholds, server by server, and collect cubic buttloads of mossy/cracked stone bricks. Unless I'm mistaken, there will be 27 new strongholds for us to mine up, so there will be PLENTY of the stuff to go around. I remember back in the old days, my shop's hottest items were mossy/cracked stone brick that I got from one of the original smp2 strongholds, but as a result, I have none left, and of course it's a finite resource, so when a new batch comes in, it's good to get it as quickly as possible. I think other people might also be going for this, too, so we gotta go fast. We'll need to bring plenty of eyes of ender, as well as some ender chests for additional storage (make sure to have silk touch to collect these), and we'll be going back-and-forth between the outposts and the strongholds to transport the materials back. I don't know, maybe I'm alone in my desire for mossy/cracked stone bricks, but I'm a sucker for limited-quantity blocks/items. Basically, I'm going to go do this anyway, and if people want to come, I won't complain. I mean, I don't need ALL of it... ...Well...
When 1.8 eventually is released, the cracked and mossy versions will be craftable, so I think the value of those items has a shelf life, but I don't see anything wrong with your idea. I don't think you will be able to organize groups to hit all the servers in one night, and maybe not even all the fortresses on a single server. Based on past outings, I think you can expect a little less production, but still lots of fun. First, as a group we pick a server to do the event, then once we have 3 or more people ready at one time (hopefully more to start) Then we start a chat group which will share xp and produce special mining perks if we stay together. It's a little harder to travel as a group, but the experience is interesting. Once we find a good spot, the leader will try and make sure the basic outpost organization is done or will find someone to do it. Set up some light, shelter and chests/enderchest. Others will drop a mine shaft and still others chop wood, or kill mobs, or maybe make an ender portal to take advantage of those possibilities. Then, we all enjoy doing normal minecraft stuff, but surrounded by friends. I highly recommend using mumble if you like to chat, or even just listen in to the group if you are shy or don't have a mic. People join and we will try and direct them to our location and invite them to the group during the event. Last time we had a good sized group and it was a ton of fun, but has been a little while since we were able to get organized like that again. I am pretty good on about any server currently. Some people have outposts in the distant frontier and don't want to travel all the way back to town for an event, so if you have a no-go server, it's best to mention it asap. It's a good plan to have a set of armor and some diamond tools/weapons in your vault in case the server that get's picked isn't one you are currently using much. We should ask Krysyy which wasteland will get updated first, because sometimes the process takes a while and it could get late before we are able to really get started.
Oh wow, I didn't realize mossy/cracked stone bricks are craftable in 1.8! Well, in that case, I'm not super fussy on hitting the strongholds, necessarily (unless other people want to), and we could just do some normal ore-mining in the brand new world instead. It'll be good because the walk back to store your loot will be much shorter than normal. Yeah, I'm up for whatever everyone else wants to do, and I agree, we should see which server will be ready first. The only thing is, I'd rather not do smp8, if that's okay, because I'm far out with a base in the frontier there. All other regular servers are fine by me!
So I'm a little confused... Mining a full inventory takes about 10 minutes. What do you do after that?
We can still go to the strongholds to get things like bookshelves and the chests and such. A plan could be to go to the stronghold get said items then strip mine? I am going to be going to Philadelphia this friday but in the hotel there should be wifi. We setup a little base with a bunch of chests in it and you can just keep filling them up. When the event is over you just pack-mule the items back to town.
With the Wastelands reset, we can mine a stone's throw from the Outposts, so it'll be really easy to transport our goods home, rinse, and repeat.
Unnghhh, I apparently won't be home on Friday until 8:30ish, probably. Is this too late? Maybe I can come find you guys if you're out there.
No advanced sign up is required. Anyone wanting to do group mining on friday is welcome to post in this thread and meet up at any time. I don't expect the wastelands to be ready until after 8pm, so we would have to start, or restart after that. Hopefully all the server and connection issues can be resolved before that.
Thanks for replying : ) Also, do we do groups for tokens and bonuses? Also, how do we split up the loot. Do we all just bring back our own stuff, help each other bring and honor system, or split it up evenly?
The group bonuses are incredible when you have a bunch of people working closely. It's typical to use all the group features during a mining event. We should all be able to just bring back our own stuff. There will be no shortage of items to collect. A bunch of chests in a central location are good for an honor system to collect less valuable items that fill up inventory slots while mining. If you are set on collecting something specific (besides diamonds maybe) then you will usually get lots of help from other players. It's a good idea to team up with someone with a fortune or silk touch pick for ores like redstone or lapis or diamonds. Keep in mind that these ores are worth 2-3 times as much as their drops. Even if you had to split the profits, it is worth mining around them and allowing for the enchanted style collection. If a player is willing to stand watch, it's always a nice idea to offer them some loot as it comes. It's hard to plan to collect everything and distribute it at the end because not everyone will join at the beginning or stay to the end. Those are some of the mining manners that I have found make group outings more fun and profitable. They are open to discussion or adjustment based on what any particular mining group wants. Some of the most valuable things to have on a big group outing would include, enchanted tools, fire protection potions for everyone or potion ingredients in general, eye of enders/ enderpearls, one or more beacons and blocks to activate them, maybe an enchanting table or anvil. Things that are easily found along the way include, wood, food, bone meal, iron, coal, bed, obsidian, etc.
Type /time in game to see what time it is in EMC time (which is the same as EDT) and then you can look at the time difference between EDT and where you live.
I can confirm I'll be in this event. Hopefully the outcome will be better than last time. Preparation is a key factor.
