What the heck has happened with the value of shulker shells??

  1. The tldr is the title lol. In my mind, ever since big shulker farms have been built, the value of shulker shells has been 1-2r each. You can get nearly a lifetime supply from a few hours or an overnight afk at the public shulker farm (thanks Fred :p ). Why then, do we continually have auctions for a couple nights worth of afk time going for hundreds of thousands of rupees? Originally I just thought it was a fluke. People who haven't played in a long time not knowing they're way overbidding. After the auctions were over I'd try and inform people, like "hey, you can buy skulker shells at the exchange (/v +ne on utopia) for 1-2r. That's the going rate." But those insane auction prices just keep going. What is happening?? At this point it's not a fluke, because the auctions just keep going. That is the price now, and the exchange has been bought down to match. It just seems rather unusual for an item that's been farmed into oblivion to suddenly 10x in value.

Side note, there's no rules against it obviously, but it does feel a tad bit scummy that I'm pretty sure most if not all of the at this point hundreds of DCs of shells have come from public farms. I could be wrong, but I believe there's only one public farm and I'm not sure if there are any working private ones. That's a lot of time to be hoarding a farm, especially one that takes manual upkeep.
And least I sound like I'm up on my high horse, I have done the same. I have privately sold boxes full of shells from the same public farm. I do try and be courteous to other people that want to use the farm, afking at off hours and being fine with someone else using it while I'm there if I don't notice someone waiting for a while. Also, donate to Fred_TWK if you use his farm on smp3 :p

Anyway, I just am trying to make sense of the market. After posting this I'm going to try and be off the crusade of devaluing shells and just let it be lol.

  2. Because people are lazy :p This is probably the most simplest answer to it, or people have more then enough rupees to buy the shulker shells they need, therefore can AFK at other farms etc, or if they don't wanna run there PC overnight, because many of the people that bid on my auction, all of them were very experienced / mods , so most likely because they have the rupees , and it's chump change :p

  3. It's the same with all public farms, item prices dropped and destroyed the market, it also took the fun out of the game for a lot of players.

Spending days or sometimes weeks clearing and building your farm only to find some has made one public and no one wants to pay for items any longer.

I do believe they should not be allowed, you should have to pay.

EMC is meant to be an economy based server not a free for all server.
  4. I believe the auctions fetching way more than the shop prices are from players just having fun bidding against each other. At this point 98% of the players in game have been around long enough to know there are farms to get items for free. It's similar to watching two of my roosters fluffing their feathers in front of each other, which one will out do the other.

The thought of charging or controlling players that use public farms is not a good one. If someone sits at a public farm with the intention of flooding the market, well, that's their take on the game and is just something that can happen. The bidders on high quantity auctions, which most are long time players, are the only ones to control how the market is driven. I haven't been bidding on the high quantity auctions because I don't want to provide incentive for other like auctions.

Only you can control the direction of the economy!

  5. Why allow these public farms and not stuff like machines using tnt dupers? It's basically the same. Both work according to game code. Mining machines and wood farms still require work.
  6. Ha. The "economy" died years ago. With the abundance of public farms and the lack of any anchors in the market, the price of most goods has just plummeted to near zero. Shulker Shells, Nether Stars, Blaze Rods, Prismarine, etc. Doesn't matter the goods, that is the fate of all items in the game as Mojang just adds more ways to farm things rather than actually going out and gathering materials.
  7. I believe the economy isn't completely dead. We do have quite a few new players that right now buy from/sell to shops. Once they accumulate a good amount of rupees there is the possibility they will join in on the auctions. The problem I see, and sorry for possibly side tracking this thread, is the trend to sell huge amounts in a single auction, thus starting off at a value too high for new players.

It might be wise to impose a limit on how many of one item can be auctioned at a time.

Using shulker shells as an example, if 2 DC's of them are auctioned off they might fetch a high price but subsequent autions will see smaller final prices because the initial frenzy would have died off. I would think the seller would realize the diminished returns not being worth the effort then hold off on creating repeat auctions and just sit on the vast stock they might have.
  8. Don't blame farms. That's lazy. They've been around since MC came out. These farms were not an issue when the servers were full. This is the biggest problem. There are not enough people anymore to match the supply. The supply hasn't changed, just less to sell too. Public farms at the beginning was a good thing with good intentions but also fell victim to low player base.

I still build farms, dig out areas for them, "play my way", I just don't really sell the stuff. For me it keeps me supplied for other things. Telling or forcing people to not make these things for public/private use is not going to fix anything and only hurt the server more potentially by driving more people away.

  9. Personally, EMC hasn't evolved with how Minecraft has. I've played on quite a few different servers during my time away the past couple of years and have found that promo-based (crate econs) aren't going to thrive in the long run. Especially when player pop drops like we've seen here on EMC. Might want to consider incorporation of additional features. Artmap is great, money sinks like blackmarket, etc. There are plenty of ways to breathe life into this aging server, I just don't think there's enough staff or interest to do so.
  10. EMC has seen the golden days, now we're seeing the darker times. I've come on from time to time to check out the shops in the past and the prices are just insane. --- I believe the two posters above me explain it best.
  11. Yeah, I'm back and don't even see the point of opening a shop. Low player count means minimal demand vs work required, and pricing? Just pointless lol They need more economy features fr fr
  12. Reminds me of 2018. I left my original res on SMP6 due to +gg being hacked and never coming back, due to low player count, and ManicMiner losing his res due to being derelict (lost enthusiasm due to low player count), and so on. I hardly come on anymore, unless it's to check in to see how things are doing or say "Hi" to anyone. Though that's become less and less common nowadays.

Not only due to me being fully-employed, rather less and less people are playing, at least the ones I'm familiar with. People are growing up~
