One of the things I notice most about new players is that some of them fly through the tutorial. When the welcome message shows, they did the whole tutorial in about four minutes. My suggestion is a chat message/set of messages that appears when a player takes shorter than ten minutes to do the tutorial, and says something along the lines of "Sure you got all of that? EMC is different than every server you have played on and can be confusing if you don't know what to do. We suggest doing the tutorial again." This, in my opinion, could reduce the amount of rush-through-tutorial-quit-and-become-derelict players.
+1 Also, the tutorial in 2013 should be brought back (the interactive one), and the wilderness portal at the end should be removed. -
Perhaps a video tutorial/Interactive tutorial would be best. Watch the video answer some questions about how to do things. Go over what not to do. IDK but definitely getting rid of the frontier portal until newbies have a 24hr global chat to communicate outside of town. Also if they're flying through the tutorial then maybe the teleporters to advance you through the tutorial shouldn't be accessible until the player is more aware of the rules. An added question to get the teleport available.
I'd like to put some extra attention on this because I also can't help worry that this may cause plenty of potential players to leave. Last evening on SMP2 we had around 3 of them in a row (two went to the Frontier together at one time). Several of us started msging and /telling players to do /town and /home and in the end it worked out for them. I think some players rush the tutorial because they think they know the basics. They know better than to grief, they know better than to swear in chat, all they want is to get out into the wilderness (survival) and build. But then they don't come prepared for not being able to chat and cannot ask for help on how to get back (in case they venture out too far).
I think that if players rush through the tutorial, they want to do so, and a message like that won't be likely to change their minds.
The new tutorial is already underway, with primarily the questions that the community sent me. Chicken has developed a chest GUI quiz system that makes answering the questions cleaner and we intend to keep things simple, but still cover the information that needs to be covered. Rushing through the tutorial will still require them to answer the questions we have correctly and they aren't simple yes/no answers. They will be plenty prepared for the environment of EMC, without the confusion that the interactive tutorial caused. I agree that our current tutorial leaves things far too open with regards to 'skipping' sections and that is addressed in the new design.
