[Suggestion] Adding non staff to the development team.

  4. Who said it was locked to only staff? Now, staff are ideal candidates, as trust/maturity is a huge part of it.

    However, you mention just_five, it's worth noting he was not staff when he became a developer. he ended up inheriting moderator powers with the developer rank and ended up moderating.

    So when he grew inactive of development, we let him transition to moderator.

    But, we are investigating more people for developer role (who said its only chicken and I currently? ;)), but not many people have demonstrated ability to develop.

    Also, we do have a strict rule of 18+ US citizens only, as have to sign a legally binding contract (essentially stating that the position is a volunteer contractor and that all code written relinquishes copyright to me and that you also won't share company secrets, typical legal protection stuff for myself).

    Also, would really need someone who has been around for a while and really active on EMC and has a perfect history...
    I've tried to get help in the past who was new/not active members, and it just didn't work out.

    Adding a new developer slows everything down for a while.. and if they aren't experienced enough, it causes more harm than good overall.

  6. Well you and chickeneer are the only ones who's ranks state that you are developers.
  7. I just went by what EpicMinerMan321 told me because he said he once tried to become developer and you said no because he wasn't a staff member.
  8. Serious harm can be caused if the wrong people are givn access. Reaching SS ranking is pathetically easy compared to becoming a developer. Record would have to be extensive, beyond reporach and mad coding skills would be necessary.

    Think about it this way. I dunno how compartmentalized Aikar can make things, but one line of code can wreck hundreds, if not thousands, of lines of code dealing with just about any element of the server. Worst case scenario if staff goes rogue is a rollback and a small PR mess to clean up. Worst case scenario for a rogue developer is no more EMC (dunno how accurate that is, but I think its a fair assumption).

  12. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but you've clearly never led a development team of any size.

    That's something you should try before criticizing the way someone else does it.

    Building EMC is not about 'figur[ing] something out faster', it's about building code that works, is bug-free, can't be exploited, and can be maintained in the future. Think about how each person is different and all the things that everyone is working on have to be coordinated to make sure they work together. Remember that each new person also adds a line of communication between them and every member of the team. For example, with a team of 7, you have 6+5+4+3+2+1 = 21 different relationships that all have to function effectively. With a team of 23, you have 22+21+20+19+18+17+16+15+14+13+12+11+10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 253 different relationships. The team size only increased by 3 times, but the complexity of the human network increased by a factor of 12!
  13. Uhm, as AmusedStew also noted earlier: Mustang isn't criticizing anyone, just wondering about the possibility of adding more developers. To be honest I think its a fair question, also because most developers seem to be hidden.
