Minecraft Scam Convention

Discussion in 'General Minecraft Discussion' started by wisepsn, Mar 26, 2014.

  1. You know what, I take back what I said. Maybe I was a little too aggressive, but I wasn't exactly aggressive. This person did FRAUD. Don't believe me? Check notch and mojang's twitters. They ALL say that they are taking the matter serious and saying it was a scam. This convention was and is a scam. They forgot many things and Kevin still hasn't explained about Nickelodeon sponsoring the convention.
  2. I thought Pab10S wasn't actually choosing a side and trying to defend it, but just compared what we know and what we don't know(most of the things we actually can't know) and explained a different look at this.

  3. I understand the different look, and I have as much information as you all. Mojang and there twitters have already stated that the convention was scammy and they are taking it to a serious matter. As some of the others have said on the thread, no matter what, a lawsuit is being made soon. I have already heard for the convention in New York some people called a complain to the New York department. Sorry I sounded so aggressive in my last posts.

EDIT: No matter what, I will still think this Kevin Roman guy is DISGUSTING and I hope mojang, nickelodeon, etc, sue for him using their logos.
  4. The use of logos is questionable and worth raising an eyebrow over, but quite frankly, the internet hate-machine is already in full gear over this and I refuse to add to it. The only mention of "scammy" Mojang's made of this is a tweet by Notch that was re-tweeted by Jeb, and a link to the same video posted in the OP - and I'mma be honest, I do not know who this "BebopVox" guy is (or much care), but he spends the first three minutes explaining how "disgusting and awful" this is, so I'm not inclined to regard his highly opinionated video with journalistic integrity.

Now if you want a more honest breakdown, I suggest this set of posts by "lionhart280" over on reddit. Seems they actually bothered to take some time and dig into the matter, rather than throw more coal in the hate-furnace.

  5. It wasn't just Notch, it was:

So... I'm not seeing actual claims of "scamminess" in any of those, just responses to the collective outrage.
To be fair: You can bet your ass they're looking into it good and proper, but until Mojang is ready to come out and say officially that this was an outright scam and not just a poorly planned / poorly managed convention (and I mean more than Notch's initial response), I'm not jumping on this bandwagon.
Now if it turns out the guy is every kind of loathsome reptile and meant to rip people off from the beginning, then I agree with you. He absolutely deserves all the hate he's been getting, and criminal charges besides. But right now, just from the information we have available? I'm not seeing it. I'm not saying we shouldn't look, just that the situation ought to be approached with sense and reason, not blind hate.

  7. Plus, second one isn't even Mojang

  8. I guess that is a fair response. I can't argue with that. I just guess I will have to wait another few weeks and here more official information and more posts from mojang.
  9. I tagged the wrong one actually, it was a suppose to be a tweet from Planet Minecraft, which kinda has connections with Mojang :p
  10. From the bottom of the Planet Minecraft website. (Bolded emphasis mine)

  11. Well PlanetMinecraft technically has connections with mojang, and by connections I mean they like KNOW each other, lol. Empire Minecraft has the same message, but our admins and moderators still sometimes like talk with mojang via twitter and they respond.

Well whatever, I am going to wait a few days and see what else is going to happen(especially with the so called convention that is suppose to be this weekend.)
  12. Talking with each other is fine. Being able to speak on Mojang's behalf though, that's another matter entirely.
I'm not trying to defend the guy, mind you. :) I'm just pointing out that it's important we keep our facts straight.

  13. Why?
  14. The real question is why not.. :] I'm not breaking any rules and I never got any red text saying "please don't bump," so I have the right to bump it. No real reason to question it.
  15. Technically, its not a scam. He didn't steal anything from anybody. OK, he broke a few laws, infringed copyright by slapping on a couple of famous logos onto his images, but he didn't actually scam anybody. The closest thing he did to scamming was giving out pens instead of prizes, but maybe the prizes were pens? And also only giving out one PS4 instead of ten.

And as BritBrit said, anybody over 18 (I personally think 13 >.>) stupid enough to believe this should be stripped of the ability to breed and sent to Mars. Once we can get a colony of smart people there, we throw them off the planet and leave them to drift in the vacuum of space :)
  16. Well yeah, I totally agree now with you and Kephras. It isn't technically a scam, but he was infringing copyright, and I REALLY hope that Nickelodeon sues this guy for using their logos.

But like in the video, I felt really bad for the child who was really excited to go here on his birthday. I guess it wasn't a win win for everyone. :/
  17. He is saying that this thread has turned into a "beating a dead horse" thread lol.
