  1. The Neorepublican Voice has it's first official members! Jake_bagby and Luke4214 welcome to the party! :D

  2. Sorry for double posting, but I was wondering, how many elected GDA members does a party need to be classified as an opposition?

  3. Most likely majority. If the GDA is 5 people, 3 people would be needed to be in the GDA, and your party to be classified as an opposition.
  4. The Liberals are the current opposition in the Canadian Parliament, with 36 out of 105 seats, if that helps.
  5. To form an official opposition, you just need to be the largest party that isn't in government.

  6. Ok, thanks!

But I'm confused, the current government isn't a party, so it isn't in power. The current mix of parties and individuals will become fairly confusion come election time...

  7. That actually made more sense the second time I read it...
EDIT: I should make a Piratepad With a list of parties.

  8. Guess what? I've made a piratepad about the political parties. It's in heavy construction so add info about your party, or just expand on the topic!

  9. I've made it more of an unofficial website for the NR.

If anyone happens to have a copy of the Constitution could they send it to me and I'll put it on.

  11. Ok, how does the NR's Government voting work?

  12. I don't think anyone knows exactly how it works...

  13. Well, if you want to stand in an election for the Grand Democratic Assembly, you tell the Election Commissioner appointed by the First Minister.
He adds you to a list which appears on the voting form.
Then, you can vote using an Empire.us poll, in game with Written Books, or by PMing the Commissioner. The voting is done through the single transferable vote, meaning you do not choose one candidate, you rank as many or as few candidates as you like in order of preference.
  14. Great job man! Keep these great news pieces coming, I found them quite useful having just returned from vacation :p Do we have an official news company or anything? It could have its own headquarters and employ journalists and writers around the NR, just a thought ;)
  15. I would prefer to avoid any Imperial entanglements. That is the plan though. One day, we will have an internet radio station, video updates, an in game newspaper, and IRL newspaper. And yes, i will be looking for workers soon.

  16. I will try to explain it here as best I can, as there is quite a bit of confusion. Now I don't know when the GDA elections will take place, but in the system I believe we will be using, here is how it will go:

-Political Parties will contest elections rather than individuals.
This will mean that elections are less of a popularity race, but one where voters choose the party whose policies best suit the interests of themselves and the NR.

-In order to be eligible to participate, a party must have five or more members
This will simplify the election greatly. It will prevent the dilution of the GDA with independents or tiny parties whose sole agenda is to sabotage proceedings. With this system, it is not possible as malicious parties can be outlawed.

-Any individual may be a member of two or less parties
If a voters favorite party is ineligible to participate in the election, the person can join another party who also satisfies their interests, giving supporters of smaller parties a voice in the GDA.

-Depending on the percentage of votes a party collects, the leader of parties who have made it in will then select individuals to take seat in the GDA representing the party.
The individuals who the leader intends to choose would preferably be made clear before the election, so the people know who they are voting in. It may be difficult to get ones head around the percentage bit, so I will give an example:

(Assuming the GDA has 7 members, which it may or may not do)
Party A polled 68% of votes. 68% of 7 seats is 4.76. That would be rounded up and the leader would have the right to choose 5 members of the GDA. *Anyone can be selected to be in the GDA regardless of any other roles they have.

Party B received 23% of votes. 23% of 7 is 1.61. The leader can then choose 2 people to sit in the GDA, as 1.61 rounds up to 2.

Party C received 9% of votes, equal to 0.63. This rounds to 1 seat.

This is a complex part of it.
Since A got 5 seats and B got 2, there should be none left for C. However, if this situation were to arise, both B and C would get 1 seat each. This is because 0.63 is closer to 1 than 1.61 is to 2.
If C's votes had rounded to, say, 0.59, then they would not get a vote, as it is further from 1 than 1.61 is to 2.

I hope this has cleared up any confusion. If anyone has further questions about the Catterson legislative then ask away!

  17. This suddenly reminds me of those annoying word problems i had back in high school.

If sally has 5 cookies, and she eats one, but gives 2 cookies to dan, and dan bakes 7 more cookies and gives 2 of them to sally, then how many cookies does sally have?

lol dean, you remind me of rainman sometimes...
