Ponies: A Guide

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous' started by MigrantMove, Feb 25, 2013.

  1. Well as of late, we seem to have a lot of My Little Pony popping up. It appears that numerous people are quite curious about this sudden event, so I will do my best to explain it. First of all, the sudden emergence of pony avatars, sigs, etc. are probably coincidental. Now I have seen people asking as well as many opinions, both positive and negative, and I just want to inform everyone. Now I will be doing this quite different then the average guide. Ask what you want to know and I will update the OP with the answer, and inform you. Please don't be shy, I am more than happy to help!

Q: What is a brony? (Asked by: N/A)
A brony to be put quite simply is a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic from ages 13-30. While mostly a male group, there are many female bronies and the term is therefore gender-neutral (Although pegasister is a term sometimes used to describe a female fan). That is really the only definites I can give, but I can attempt to summarize this iffy topic. The brony is community is very active and fan driven. Fanfiction, music, art, comics, etc. are commonplace in the fandom. I would have to guess that about 80% of all content consumed by bronies is fanmade. As of late, games have been popping up, but many are getting C&D notifications from Hasbro. That's really all I can say for this.
That is probably one of the best questions that could be asked. It all depends on the kind of person really. If you really don't mind judgement or don't think you will be judged, you can just come right out. However, a large portion of bronies are afraid of others knowing and hide this fact. We refer to these people as "closet bronies". Let me tell you (from personal experience) it isn't fun. I was a closet brony until about last Thursday in fact. But the message to take from this is that for the most part, people are either open or closet.

Okay, this is always a tough one. The reasons for people liking MLP are as vast and varied as anything else, including Minecraft. Some people like the art style and animation (it is basically the pinnacle of error-riddled Flash). Other people like the storylines in the show, something uncommon for a children's cartoon. One big seller is the characters, which despite being ponies are very human and relatable. The characters each have distinctive personalities and character flaws. This may be a children's show, but it is very well written and made. Some people like the innocence of the show considering what is on most of TV, some like the ideals of friendship, and some people just watch it because it's ironic (we generally don't talk about those people though...).
First of all, funny you should mention a documentary. http://www.bronydoc.com/
Anyway, now to answer the question. In a relatively short time? Absolutely not. Now I must admit that a large amount of people are fine with bronies, but there are still plenty who aren't. Because people are pretty stubborn, it would take a long time to flip the public opinion. However, cultures always change and I am confident that one day these arbitrary and outdated gender expectations will be torn down. It will take a long time however.
Okay, I can agree on this. We don't need to shovel MLP into everything or on everyone. I think the reason we attach it to everything is because each brony has different interests, and they want to combine them with other things we like. This is at the center of all fan driven communities however, MLP is not an unusual case at all.
I can't really answer that. Whenever people get over themselves I guess.
  2. How do you and other bronies explain to people in real life that you are a fan of MLP?

  3. Why the hell do people like this?
  4. Don't be so intolerant, not everyone has interests considered normal by mainstream society.
  5. They just enjoy watching it ;)
I have a friend here on EMC that likes MLP, its nothing weird.

  7. What I said came out wrong. I just want to know what people who watch it find appealing about it.

  9. I know a few open bronies, I think it's ridiculous that out of everything you can judge something on, there are people within society who would discriminate against people who like a television show. I did hear about a brony who committed suicide due to being judged by others. Do you think that eventually MLP will leak into mainstream culture and become more acceptable? And I don't mean one mainstream documentary doing a piece on it, I mean something which will acquaint society with this fandom and lead to open understanding and tolerance of bronies.

  10. I hate how everyone thinks people who like MLP (Like me ) Are weird and call us names and stuff, YES granted the fanbase can get....weird. but not everyone is like that. A Bronie is simply someone who likes MLP...nothing more...nothing less.

  11. Well, you just be honest. It doesn't hurt as much if you admit it behind a computer, but in real life, it is extremely hard. My friends have been accustomed to my MLP liking, and their fine with it.
  12. I just kinda showed up one day wearing a shirt.....no one cared.

    IMAGINE THAT

  13. Well, as well as I know, I think that it's just a natural signal that goes of your brain. The show WAS only for 5-6 year old girls, but eventually, teenagers, adults, and many more kinds of people enjoy this show.

    Otherwise, I'm not that sure.

    XD
  14. I didn't do that o_o
  15. Yeah, if you think about it, if they judge you something that YOU enjoy, it doesn't really help anyone in the world. It's basically like the quote,

"Don't judge a book by its cover"

EDIT: Why did I just triple post?? O_O
  16. Is it really needed that it seems every MLP fan and their Grandma seems to find a way to throw MLP into EVERYTHING?}
  17. Question answered!
  18. Exactly :p
  19. Those haters just wish they were as cool as this
(Edit) Holy crap that wasn't supposed to be that gigantic ()_()
