How does one be a good person?

  1. I'm interested to hear some opinions on this. What is your definition of a good person? What does a good person do? What things are essential to being a good person?

    Opinionate away.
  2. You're born being good. One does not simply turn good.

    Not done~
Okay, I'm really pissed off. I had this wall of text in the progress. I was really inspired and my lights went off. Yh :/

  3. By the post-modernist standard of our world, good is something relative. Everyone decides what is good on their own, and their are sure to be conflicts. I believe that God has defined for us what is good and righteous, and what is sin. That is the moral code I strive to live towards, even though in the fallen state of man I cannot come even close. Most moral codes in world seem to correlate closely with the Bible's, but this is my basis for what is good and what is not.

  4. That is a good question, i guess everyone is their own version of nice in a way, i cannot exactly say what "nice" is or isn't, but i can give the EMC version of "Not Nice" I guess "Not Nice" would be someone who is rude and unpleasnt to talk to in general, one who lies and swindles others for their own personal gain, one who constantly causes issues with the mods and breaks the rules. now everyone slips up sometimes and says something they shouldnt have or is rude. But if that person does the same thing over and over and does it blantantly and with complete defiance of the rules, then i guess they could be qualified as "Not Nice". You want my example of a "Not Nice" Character. Ask anyone from Smp7 about 621op -_-

  5. There is no such thing as a good person. It is simply impossible.
  6. I believe the Bible correlates with naturally selected human morality, not the other way around. Now both our opinions have been aired on the topic, let's leave it at that and not derail it into a deathmatch against the religions.

  7. So there is no such thing as someone who is generally morally upright? We're all wild ravenous apes?
  8. Good idea.....i have seen that happen before and it isn't pretty
  9. It depends on what religous stand point you are looking at
Christian is someone who Loves God with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength, and is willing to give his life to him.

In an atheist standpoint, A Good person is someone who never holds a grudge, someone who very rarly gets angry at another, and always looks on the postive side of things.

  10. Good things involve actions that may not benefit the doer, but a number of others. Whether it be holding the door for an elderly person or renovating a classroom in a third world country, you're doing something good. Those who do it may not even receive a reward, never stopping, never asking for thanks.
  11. "Good" and "bad" are relative terms defined by society.

And according to the Price Equation there is no such thing as true altruism.
  12. Step 1) Don't do wrong things. (Or "evil things," if that seems better; I just don't care for the word because it's so overloaded.)

While doing #1 may not make you good in everyone's eyes, you're at least not overtly bad. Still, it could be considered by some to be bad to just stand on the sidelines if you see someone else actively doing bad things, which brings me to #2:

Step 2) Actively seek to do good things, including actions that prevent others from doing bad things.

Of course, this requires you to define what "good" means in the first place—but I believe, aside from sociopaths/psychopaths—that we all have an innate sense of right and wrong in most cases, especially when this innate sense has not been overridden by being indoctrinated with so-called "morals" by, e.g. religious institutions or racist parents, say.
  13. I believe being good directly correlates with The Golden Rule: One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. And on the flip side : One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated.

  16. That is a fascinating question. A good person is one who informs and follows their conscience.

Another way to put it is, "Do no harm."

  17. You become a "good person" when you realize that building lava walls to charge people entry into the wild is a bad idea.
  18. Everyone is good in some way <3

  20. Magic.

But in all seriousness, being "good" depends on yourself. How do you define good?
