Is gambling banned?

  1. IDK why we'd have 8 and 9 years old in here where the ToS for EMC cleary states that minimum age to play on the server is 13....

ITS A GAME... if you are to put real world rules over a GAME.. then you wouldnt be able to build with sand... lava or w/E...

Gambling is just another way of ppl trying to have fun on this game, whereas by being MULTIPLAYER, interactions between the players WILL occur, and having an economy system always makes ppl willing to have more

While I dont support the scamming part of it (totally against it), I do believe that a fair set of rules and restrictions are fine...

    On another note:

exactly as you promted me on our issue... Just ignore players advertizing casinos if you dont want yor kids to hear about them... soo much trying to "protect" them makes THE WHOLE REST of the community to adjust to YOUR toughts?

And i agree with Keno.. should be a News bulletin stating that casinos are to be closed for now... cant be reading through a random pos on the forums (wich have more than 32k topics" to find this
  2. OK, to be honest I don't have the time in class right now to read all these replies, but I just want to say a few things.

When I can to EMC about a month ago, I had the idea of building a casino. A full out, popular casino, and a casino only. So far, I have 4 real casino games and horse racing (yes, horse racing) available. Since I have started my casino, I have seen many try to imitate me and copy my games straight out, at least on server 3. To my knowledge, I was the first to do roulette, the first to do real balanced slots, not random biased "lucky dips", the first and only to do war, and soon the be the first to do horse racing. Since then, I have seen many players, especially those why have played at my casino, create their own casinos at their res, and butcher the whole thing and turn it into a scam.

For reference, ask zulu9, DangerousPopcorn, d1223m, uriel131, Mr_Greer, brandop, ong, etc where they saw the games first. I'm not trying to act high and mighty, but it does upset me that some people have ripped me off only to scam people and have my main economic means become at risk.

For all my games, I calculate the EXACT odds of each outcome (I have taken advanced engineering statistics courses, so they are guaranteed, not just assumed) and provide a payout for each outcome with a slight house edge for the casino. I post all the odds and the payouts on every game, so the players can see what they are betting on and what they will receive.

I have seen other "casinos" payout 3 to 1 on events that would be a 1 in 6561 chance of occurring. That's a scam, but not because its dirty, since its just a HUGE house edge, but because these "casinos" don't post the odds and the payouts, and even when they do, they are calculated wrong, or not explained well.

Anyway, what I'm asking for is the mods to evaluate these gambling games on a user per user basis and see if they are fair. I'm here to make rupees just like everyone else, but instead of selling items, I sell a chance to win some money, with a decent house edge for profit. And beyond that, I am here to build an epic res that people enjoy coming to. I have ideas for at least 3 more games and even a centralized commodities exchange/market. Maybe some of you think I am taking things to far, but what I find the coolest thing about Minecraft, and more so with EMC, is that with the right systems and setups, I can mimic real world economics to some degree. Like others enjoy building huge, crazy structures and castles, I like economics.

  3. i'd be happy if gambling stayed banned. their whole purpose is to make money of other's misfortune, that just doesn't sit right with me.

  4. So it was you who started all this trouble! lol

Just kidding of course. You can in no way be held responsible for the actions of others... who, in this case, seem to have taken what you have done well and done it badly... to the point where we need to tell people how to do it right to avoid chaos.

It sounds like you know a good deal about gambling games and such. Maybe we should make you our gambling inspector, lol.

I think the gaming regulations we are coming up with will have little effect on those like you who seem to be running professional and legitimate casinos.

  5. I 100% agree with mike, he made a small roulette game to begin with on smp3 and then me and him built a legit casino. Ever since that the people who regularly bet in our casino began to copy and made their own casino's unfair and therefore cheating. Our casino has always been legitimate and hopefully can continue after this debate. At our casino we clearly show odds so people see exactly what they can win with their own risk. Other Casino's didn't and continued to cheat, more and more players started to play in our casino because of it being trustworthy.

  6. One of the reasons I made the casino is because I feel its a nice way for rupees to be siphoned off from the public, to lower the money supply that EMC pumps in daily. If I could be the official EMC casino (as governments in real life usually have) then I'd have no problem giving the profit back to the admins. For me, I enjoy designing and building games, using red stone, and operating a business, but since the rupees are quite useless to me in the real world, I'd have no problem parting with most of them.

This is also the reason I plan on creating a diamond (and other commodity) exchange, in order to stabilize and publicize a market value for them. Profit is just a bonus.

  8. while i am sure your intentions are honorable, my shop does the same thing, it siphons rupees out of the public and puts them in my account, seems i don't spend much, it lowers the money supply. the difference is, after my shop siphons money the person who has been siphoned walks away with a tool they like, and hopefully feeling like they got a good deal. when someone walks away from a casino after having their rupees siphoned off, they just walk away dissappointed.

sure there might be some winners, but you said your self, the odds are stacked for the house, so there's always going to be more losers than winners, so more disappointed people than happy people.

  9. Haha, unlike in the real world, the admin here have absolutely no use for money (rupees) in-game. So the only people who could use it are the players.

If you want to give something back, finding a clever way to give back to the community would totally rock... and if you started a trend with something like that, well... that would rock even harder! :D

"I feel its a nice way for rupees to be siphoned off from the public, to lower the money supply that EMC pumps in daily." ...is an interesting way to say you're in it for the profit, lol. :p

Actually, if you wanted to give something back to the community, hosting free games would be brilliant!!

And yes, building clever games and redstone contraptions is definitely part of the fun of Minecraft multiplayer.

I would be very careful with schemes like commodity exchanges if I was you. Things like that need to be handled with the proper skill, ethics, and professionalism, and the idea will almost certainly get out of hand like gambling has.

...I really like the idea of hosting free games! I think I may actually do that myself. :D

I've been looking for ways to give back to the community too.

  10. There's something really interesting here.

If you think that money transferred from the community/public to you decreases the money supply, then you are assuming that you are not part of the community/public.

This is incorrect. Each one of us is absolutely and irrefutably part of the community/public. So taking money from other people absoltely and irrefutably does not siphon or drain money from the community in any way, it just changes whose bank account that money sits in.

    Interesting huh? :D
  11. yep, you're right. and if all of a sudden i wanted to spend it all i could. but i think gtabmx's idea of "taking money out of the system" meant lowering the amount being exchanged on a day today basis and affecting supply / demand. sure money sitting in a bank account is still in the system, but due to no interest or taxes, as long as it stays there it's benign and wont affect inflation of prices.

at least thats my understanding, i am certainly no expert on economics :)
  12. I am saying money going to me is decreasing the money supply because I would gladly give it away or destroy it. I posted in another thread a while back saying that there is going to be hyperinflation with the daily bonus, nearly unlimited supply, no living costs, and no EMC collection.

If I could, I'm trying to make the rupee economy more realistic.
  13. you can give it to me if you like.
  14. Actually, what you're calling hyperinflation is, in this context, more likely just fantastic prosperity.

This is a semi-realistic simulated economy, and it's become a tremendously prosperous one. The only reason someone might see that as unrealistic is that our real world economies don't have any precedent or example of such prosperity that we can relate what's happening in the Empire to, so it's foreign to us.

Continuous growth and unlimited wealth. It's the ulitmate economic dream.

And yeah, if you have the attitude towards money that you would gladly give it away or destroy it, you should definitely be running free games. That's way better and more practical than destroying it, and it's the same as giving your money away. :)

  15. The more money people get for free, combined with the zero cost of living, is why diamonds went from 25r to 50r+ and will continue to rise as people have more disposable income to buy diamonds instead of trying to find them on their own.

    -Mike
  16. this was discussed on the other thread about inflation. they can't rise higher than the empire shop cap, or people will buy from there. i don't remember diamonds being 25r, but i don't buy them. if anything i think prices have gone down due to more competition. many people run shops because running a shop is fun, not because they need to survive off it, whatever rupees are worth is irrelevant.

  17. Thanks a lot RObbieJo for your kind words, very much appreciated :)

People need to remember that because Minecraft is such an awesome game players come from all different age groups, ethnicities and religions and all these need to be taken into consideration when interacting on any level.

And no Mrlegitislegit she is not my mother :)

  18. OK, so after all this discussion, what is the verdict on gambling and casinos? I just finished horse racing, which took me 2 full days and over 6 stacks of redstone and about 30 pistons and can't wait to unleash it to the public!.

  19. and all those repeaters gtabmx ;)
  20. Yeah, I think the prices have been dropping too... due to an increase in supply I would imagine (more people mining/gathering), along with an increase in sellers.

Incidentally, I believe it's mining/gathering that is the main driving force of item prices. More miner/gatherers lower prices; less miner/gatherers, higher prices.

Actually, a while ago I heard someone say something to the effect of "The economy here is going downhill, everything is free".

That made me laugh, because in an economy where everything is free an ideal level of prosperity has been reached.

Of course, not everything is free, but several things have become so abundant that many people are willing to give them away for free.

I think that's fantastic! It's like living in a dream economy.

I mean, can you imagine if we had such an abundance of something, anything, in the world that it became free? Like, what if we found a way to make food so abundant that it was free? Wow!!

Ooh, wouldn't that make marketers, profiteers and other capitalists so mad?

I think what we're saying when we say we want to 'balance' the Empire Minecraft economy is that we want to make it match our real world economy, a scarcity-based economy, more closely. I'm not sure that's realistic, as any Minecraft economy is one based on unlimited potential for wealth... and this is because there is an unlimited amount of resources available to anyone and everyone who cares to put the energy into going to get it (which is pretty easy overall; anyone can do it).
