  1. LMAO OMG raining death in the land of the living do it!
  2. My idea of an anti-Utopia is Hardcore - if you can bring enchanted items over then - whats the point... make random spawn points... zero day... if you want xp - go kill stuff... and make enchants only here...

Key to me is - if you die - you die... start from a fresh spawn point - and dont bother getting your gear because someone else snagged it...

Build a fortress with a friend or 5 - man the lava button - and game on.

If you die - too bad... make sure your house is safe... traps everywhere... and BONZAI!
  3. This idea is full of all kinds of win. I can't believe someone didn't come up with it before! I mean the entire MC community at large would love more of a challenge. Great job rayson1357

The community has spoken (15 yes votes, 0 no) and we will almost certainly implement this idea. Now we will just have to workout exactly how it will all work.

From my initial thoughts I feel it would be easiest to make this its own server. The way I see a hardcore server working would be:
    • An insane amount of mobs
    • Always night
    • No Town on the server (this would also allow us to have a higher player cap).
    • When you die you don't drop your items, they go away.
    • Being it is an Empire server it would have the same vault / rupees / cross-server XP (not released yet). The vault would only work in the protected spawn zone (and that would be the only protected area). This would make it an awesome place to earn XP to use on other servers. I am sort of against adding any server to the Empire that doesn't provide the "integrated Empire feel"
    • This would NOT BE PVP
    • Local chat only

At first I thought the random spawns would be awesome, but how would you team up? Would we have a live map?

Lets figure this out community, what do you think?

  4. Go ahead with it!! Its an epic idea :D, who knows, at the rate the community is growing, maybe this will come to fruition by the time I get back from holiday XD
  5. Make it a SEPARATE SERVER. :)
1 Spawn would be great. Have outposts here as well. (Maybe 8 instead of 4. N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW)
It must be integrated same as all servers.
    ABSOLUTELY NO PVP!!
I prefer NO LIVEMAP... Livemap would take away the loneliness aspect. :D
    MR2R2M likes this.
  6. Just curious...

Would the supporter channel be active?
  7. I don't see why not :) Also, I think there could be some discussions on the supporters forum regarding possible perks for us if something like this were to be incorporated into the Empire, what do yah all think?
  8. I've got zero issue with the no PvP - but I'm setting traps around my place... stay out!!
  9. live map is not necessary, its hardcore (bring a compass and a map :D ). Besides, not having livemap will make players happy when they encounter a friendly fort thats well protected and it would encourage players to make ones more often and less distance apart to provide safe heaven to their party and visitors, (imo griefing would be very rare here since nobody wants to destroy safe spots, so thats a big +).

As for spawns, making random spawns would be bad (people would be to far apart to meet up and without livemap it would be impossible), also making 1 spawn would be .... crowded. So solution is simple, make multiple spawn points (like 10 or so) across the world.

as for mobs, i dont agree with ideas of bringing nether mobs here, only standard ones in, not to large number, may be double or triple at best, since to much mobs would pretty much instakill people and make navigation impossible, while having double the amount of mobs is quite a lot already (and you can make adjustments to mob count from there).

  10. Sounds awesome... can't wait!
Question though - will we be able to lock chests in this evil world?
  11. My thoughts on this awesome idea:
    • No live map. This is a cruel world.
    • Needs to be a separate server. Part of the benefit of Utopia is the low population, low lag environment.
    • Monsters:
      • At least double in number.
      • Higher health and damage. Balanced around having full armor. Cruel world.
      • The new AI in 1.2 will be beautiful with this!
      • Zombie pigmen automatically aggressive.
      • Higher drop rates.
    • Thunderstorms, ALWAYS. This would add tremendously to the atmosphere. Cruel world.
    • Thunderstorms 24/7. Yes I said it twice. I'd say it twenty more times, but that's just spam.
      • This would make charged creepers and zombie pigmen a not-uncommon sight.
    • Server MUST be low-lag at all times. Laggy mobs would RUIN the challenge presented here.
    • Local chat only. No supporter chat. Any global channel would seriously harm the atmosphere.
One issue I see here is people camping at the edges of the protected areas, exploiting them to farm mobs easily. The spawn system design should take this into consideration.

    Spawn system:
    • Similar system that we have now, but the central hub is walled off from the wild. You have to use an outpost.
    • It would be really cool to redesign the hubs, with a locked-down theme. The hubs and protected areas would be 50x50, such that the walls end where the protection ends.
    • No-build zone is larger than mob-protected zone. You have to fight mobs off to reach an area where you can build. Also keeps people from building against the hubs.
    • I'll volunteer to help with the design of the hubs. This kind of architecture is very interesting to me.
  12. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to lock chests, it is a much valued safety system for the wilderness and part of griefer/thief protection.

I am interested in knowing peoples thoughts on cross-server vault though. As XP is now cross-server, do you think there is a need to have access to the vault on a dedicated survival server? As Justin mentions in the quoted paragraph below, there will likely be no town on this server, which is usually the place where vault is accessible. I don't know if it is possible to make a small area, such as the spawn point, where vault is accessible, but personally i think it might be more hardcore without vault or store access, and every player has to begin with a completely empty inventory and build their life in the wild from there.

For now though i think if everyone puts some thought into what they would consider to be some great features to have/not have in a hardcore SMP server, and when the time comes bring them up in the appropriate discussions.

    Justin says in smp6 announcement:
"Soon we will also be kicking off discussion for our next special server. It is going to be a hardcore SMP server (without a Town) geared towards those in the Empire that want more of a survival challenge. So look for those community conversations starting soon!"
  13. Yeah, I think chests would be good and probably necessary, but the vault might me too much benefit if this is supposed to be a rough world - I could just import a fully enchanted set of diamond armour and tools, stacks of food and torches, etc... it wouldn't be too hard to survive after that. :p
  14. Wow, I caused a necro bump! I'm amazing! :D
  15. A set of armor should be expected, not a bonus. If we tune this around a naked player, then people with armor won't be challenged. As soon as people get a base established, iron armor will be right around the corner.

Mob damage should be tuned such that they hit full, unenchanted iron armor almost as hard as default-hard mobs would hit a naked player. This allows enchanted, diamond armor to still feel potent, but not invincible.

The real challenge here lies in how big can you build, and how far out.

Keep in mind, the whole point here is to have a seriously HARD server. Establishing a base without help needs to be a monumental challenge; initial building should almost require a group of people. The TeamSpeak server will help groups coordinate as they fight against all odds to build a refuge.

The vault needs to be available, but only in protected areas.
  16. What I in-vision is a central spawn building that has like 30+ portals to outposts. I think allowing use of the vault in the protected starting zone is perfectly fine. After all this is what the empire is all about. I also like the ideas of designing it so you cant be a coward and camp in a safe zone (running in and out).
  17. Double the usual ratio of zombies as compared to other mobs. This is now the zombie apocalypse server.
    Yes, they're the fast zombies.
  18. I suppose it depends on how difficult the mobs are really going to be... if they are modified to do more damage, it could be rough even with armour; but with enchanted armour, ten stacks of obsidian, a stack of torches and food I could run out and build a creeper-proof, non-mob spawning house quickly and relatively easily by myself. From there, I could mine down and collect resources safely... making it less difficult. If there was no vault, I would see your idea of a group effort being more necessary. Not saying I don't want a vault myself, but if it's really going to be difficult I would say no vault or locks on chests. THAT would be hardcore!
  19. I would like there to be vaults and chests, like Justin said, that is what the Empire is about. Even though it is a hardcore server, there will still be griefers so I would very much like my stuff that I have worked for to be safe in a locked up chest thank you very much.
