Do I need to have a Witch's Gem equipped when I first load a chunk with a chest, or just when I open the chest? I was disappointed that I found no enchanted golden apples, Swift Sneak books nor 5 disc fragments in that ancient city. After the 1.20 wastelands reset, I'm determined to leave no stone unturned. I'll try very hard to explore every desert and jungle until every temple is looted (not to mention that I enjoy those two biomes anyways). I'll also try to search under every mountain peak biome or badlands with a mountain peak for an ancient city. Nonetheless, I don't know when I have to wear the Gem for it to have the desired effect. Enchanted golden apples are rare.
afaik, the loot is not generated until the chest is opened. and fwiw, I got ~2.5 stacks of enchanted golden apples from ancient cities across 2/3 smps
