?

Do you think this is a good idea?

  1. I think raising awareness about the tools available is the best thing for the community. The compass and the dynamic map are very helpful. I do not see a need for any new features when the current system works just fine. :)

I know some players are more frequent than others on EMC, raising awareness would be the best choice and will help acquaint new players with the already-existing helpful tools. :D

If the new players simply refuse to use the tools that are at their disposal, then they are free to leave EMC. No one likes complainers.

  2. There is always ways to get back to town fast (even if it's taking the ol' Ender chest + death trick). People just gotta know that there is no fast way back save from walking back or death. If they don't adhere to the warnings given, they already have the tools necessary to get back. If they refuse to use that, they can either wander until they find it (even though coordinates are set where the outposts are) or just stay lost. I have no sympathy for those who refuse to even try.

  3. To be honest I did not read most of the posts above mine. There is a lot of text. So please let me know if my comment has already been said.

For the last few months I have been saying the tutorial needs a rethink. I think it is appropriate to have a tutorial because of all of EMC’s custom features. However the tutorial should NOT be about the rules, rather teaching new members how to use the custom plugin that powers EMC. It should be short as well, and absolutely NOT require having to access a separate website. This is not an actual statistic, but I estimate around 20% of players do not complete the tutorial and another 70% do not stay for more than three or four days after joining. This could be because they are lost, or that they just do not know how the server works.

Part of the tutorial should be about the waste and frontier/wild. It is a major part of gameplay. Sure, you can mention that griefing is strictly forbidden. However players must also be taught how to access these worlds and how to get back.

EMC has so many amazing custom features. Custom mobs, custom plugins, etc. So, why is our tutorial about the rules, and not about showing off these features?
  4. I find this a bit ironic, because this is the main reason why this is an issue: new players don't read the information presented to them because there is a lot of text. :p

Well, I think the chance of a new player leaving after getting lost in the waste is significantly slimmer than the chance of a new player leaving after getting banned. ;)

  5. Although I do not have the numbers, the amount of players that leave after a few days is obviously higher than the number of players that are banned. Those that are banned are often purposely joining the server to cause trouble, so the rules in the tutorial would not change anything. And for the minority of players that are banned for reasons they did not intend, these bans are frequently not very long and can be appealed.

  6. It will be a disservice in the end. If you get lost, you should ask for help and have the opportunity to get to know the live map, compass, etc.

  7. Does anyone know if the Compass is shown by default? When I switch to an smp I haven't been on for a long time I need to enable the display of it. Then I have to enable the 'X' to point to the nearest spawn. Setting the display of it by default will be one less obstacle a new player needs to deal with.

I also noticed it is not a dynamic pointer. If I'm near the North spawn when I set it to point to the nearest spawn it will still point me in that direction even if I am near another spawn. A trivial point for new players but I just wanted to bring it up.

I think that new players could rely on this too much and when the time comes to where it goes away, the player will be lost.

Maybe have it to where the emc assistant has a setting where it can point to the nearest spawn??

  9. Agreed. This is a useless idea when we already have tools that help players be self-sufficient on their own.

    This already exists.
