  2. If Holiday is vacation, what do you call holidays?
  3. That's what I thought too =P

  4. In came from the middle east of England and it literally means holy day which was a free day of labor. So in England we always called Vacation "holiday" :)
  5. You were in Gaydon? That is about 2 miles away from my cousin, but the other side of the country to me.

  6. Nope, sorry to disappoint ;)
Eh? It's just holiday, we don't say vacation here :p
Indeed, for a couple hours or so, went there last year too :D Good cars at the museum there! :)

Day #7 coming up in a minute, I'm going to upload some pictures and write it all up and I'll post it below when I'm ready!
  7. What have you been photographing of mine this time! Also it has been 28 minutes and no day #7

  8. Day #7
Today, we went to Beamish, an open air museum that has many different areas based in various parts of time, for example a 1900's town and an 1840's farm. There are old buses, trams, cars, bikes, shops (some of them are actually functioning too, we bought bread from the bakery in the town!), many of the buildings are accessible and full of old items, all of the staff are dressed in classical clothing, there's a mine, over 350 acres of area to explore, it was a great place.

After that, we ate at Pizza Hut, and the car park there is massive, so seeing as how it was a Saturday night with youths having nothing to do, a large group of cars met up there. VWs, Fords, classics, JDM cars, Nissan and Subaru, some really nice cars turned up. Didn't manage to take any pictures but it was a nice sight to see!

I had some difficulty uploading images, however I did get one to upload from today :)

  9. How am I suppose to know where you've trespassed this time without any pics? :(

  10. Had some trouble trying to get the images up still but one of them should have gone up... I can't see it because this internet is so bad in the hotel but hopefully you can see it :p Maybe the internet will be better tomorrow, see y'all ;)
  11. Day #7 Continued
So, Beamish. Lots of old transport and old areas to take a look at. I have pictures of many things from the day but I have to share this one...

    PONY!

    Day #8
Beamish was such a big place, we went again for a few hours the next day! We bought some confectionery and visited the rest of the areas, and I managed to bag a picture of the car that I was trying to hunt down the day before!

We then traveled to Tanfield Railway, went across the whole line from the... Middle to the back to the front and then got off in the middle again? Something like that. Got a few pictures there too, I'll share one below!

    Day #9
Ah, the long travel home. First, though, we went to Chesterfield to visit the Crooked Spire Chapel. A very unique and interesting building, where the spire is, well, crooked. Picture of that below.

Upon entry to the car park again at Chesterfield, I saw this awesome Audi R8. Had to snap a picture...

That wraps up my journey! I'm now back home, trying to catch up on things, and soon to be sleeping for a very long time! :p I'll keep the thread open so you guys can keep commenting, but other than that, it's it from me, I hope that you have all enjoyed! ;)

  12. Oh, I only just saw this >.<
I've never got the "vacation/holiday" thing, I just say whatever I feel like :p
    Aw... <3

Okay, he's blue and he's a steam engine. But apart from that... he/she/it doesn't really look like Thomas, honestly (but you may be able to convince me if a picture of the front shows a face).
Hm, don't like this one too much :p

Ooh, that one is nice, though...

Where do you find all of these?

I live next to the railway, and haven't seen a steam engine in a really long time :c

This was a nice thread, I did enjoy reading!

  13. Thanks 607, glad that you enjoyed it! Here in Britain, there are still quite a lot of what we call "heritage lines", where old steam trains are preserved and still run on a regular basis throughout the spring and summer at least :) When rail transport was in decline a good few decades or so now, many lines were shortened or completely dismantled, though the small lines that remained were eventually taken up by volunteer groups that started running preservation lines, and there's a few of those around today that you can pay to enter and enjoy! :D

As for the train you didn't like too much, that is the APT-E. This stands for Advanced Passenger Train - Experimental. It was a project first thought up of in 1960 something by British Rail to make travel much faster and easier, by introducing a long train capable of tilting inwards on corners to maintain speed. Eventually, the experimental was born, and this is the only one that they made that you see right there! The experimental seemed to be a good idea at the time and eventually the project turned into APT-P, I believe this meant Advanced Passenger Train - Prototype. In the early 1980 period, there were a few APT-Ps built and it wasn't long before they entered service! The APT was probably in service for about a week on train lines, but after testing and reports of passengers actually becoming sick because of the tilt system, the train was deemed a failure. British Rail also went through many management issues at the time, and the plan simply fell through. Some APTs were scrapped, only the experimental at Shildon survived, and also one of the APT-Ps made it through, but last I heard, it was starting to fall into a bit of a bad state, but it housed at a heritage centre.

So, is the experimental ugly? Sure is, but it lead on to the APT-P, shown here...

Even though the plan became a failure, the tilting idea was a system that companies even now have adopted and put into use. For example, the Virgin Pendolino, produced by Alstom I believe, uses a tilt system and is very successful. Sure, the British system went wrong, but it was a good idea and turned into something great!

    Here's a Pendolino:
