I had a cobble generator at one point. Because of the lag, and the fact that redstone circuits can break when you leave the lot I found it an infective way to farm cobble. I was spending more time working on making it work than using it. It really is more effective to just go out and dig. Even in just the exposed areas right outside the spawn. lots of exposed stone with little risk of harm.
