I think you should put in your real name and birthdate when asked for it. The former avoids potential organisational or legal issues, and the latter avoids deviating statistics.

@607: But that stuff isn't something you want to be telling people you've only met online, necessarily. For example, I can't see any reason why providing either of those would be necessary to be given on EMC, even if volunteered

Obviously if you need that site for your employer or governmental stuff that's different. But like waffle pointed out, there's absolutely no reason to volunteer that info here. And I'm not just out here going "the boogeymen might get you!" because no.

They might not track you down irl. But some people will use their knowledge over you as power to get something out of an interaction with you they wouldn't have tried otherwise if they didn't know your age. Some friends people make on the internet are true, I don't deny that, they've been some of my best friends. My point was just...be careful. A good friend won't force that info out of you any how.

I'm kind of limited to what I can say about it here, both by EMC guidelines and the fact many here don't really need to know the deep details. It's why my last post on the smp8 PWU was so vague. 🤷‍♂️

I think that people should stop saying "it's my birthday"... combined with your age, people now have your whole birthday ._. I will gladly tell people my "online birthday", which just happens to be EMC's anniversary hahaha.

For online people, when they get pushy for my name and I don't trust them, I give them my "online name". I have a bit of an "online profile" with "online personal information" that i use on people who i refuse to tell real information to.

For more safety, you shouldn't have one "online profile" with all of the same information, either. For example, my "online birthday" is currently EMC's anniversary, but I've had at least 3 different "online birthdays" in the past. For EMC, my "birthday" is its anniversary permanently because it's funny, but I may have a different "birthday" for another game.

That seems overly convoluted, SteamingFire. :P Can't you just tell people you don't want to share you birthdate and given name?
@Slvr: I thought you were talking about sites, not people. Considering 'random' people asking for personal details you'd rather not share, I agree.

@607 I'm talking about the people who won't stop asking. They need something, so I give them something. If I tell them no, they just get more determined.

I wasn't expecting to be in a case like this myself so soon after arguing about it. :P I'm questioning on whether to join a Facebook group with 111 members of a web community... at the moment, only about a dozen of the people there know my real name, probably. If I'd join, many more would lay the link, I suppose.

At the same time, people already could if they really looked into it, as I liked a post of a meeting that I was at, and I have the same profile picture on Facebook... but that doesn't seem like a valid justification to make it even easier to make the link. :P
