Yesterday/today was a short day followed by a red-eye flight home which was miserable (left at 8pm, arrived at 6:45am). I was sad to leave but damn, my home internet is so nice :D Jun 20, 2023

Only local foods that I had were Halibut and Salmon. I was not super interested in Caribou/Reindeer sausage (or Elk)! On our last full day we were lucky and got to see Humpback, Fin, and Killer whales as well as Dall porpoises.

If you are wondering about the Mt. Denali pic, the mountain is the bright white cloud just to the right of center in the picture :D

That is a great picture Blockhead. It really shows the vast open terrain. Are there any local different meals you have tried?

As beautiful as Alaska is though, I would never survive the winter temps and darkness - the days are as short as 5.5 hours in the biggest city, Anchorage and practically non-existent in some places north of there

Yeah. Juneau's and Sitka's climates are milder, but they're isolated from any other settlement by road/rail and still cold and gloomy. Even Sitka can't even support palms despite its mild winters; the growing season is just too short. As for further north, Fairbanks would be brutal!

Visiting the 49th state. What a beautiful place. I'd kill myself if I tried to live here though ;) As an example of the beauty, we were lucky to catch a glimpse of Mt. Denali: https://photos.app.goo.gl/TN9ov3L9NsbnKLTV9

Yeah. Denali is the only place outside of Antarctica known to drop to -100 degrees F or lower (which has been confirmed by the NWS). It's stunningly beautiful, but the extreme altitude in an already-freezing place makes it even colder than Greenland and Siberia!
