75hz came around when CRT monitors were everywhere. It was designed mainly to reduce headaches that CRT monitors caused some people when operated at 60hz. Even though there was almost no content online that used all 75 frames drawn each cycle, it did, however, reduce the headaches that some people suffered from.
My original post does not change, most LCD screens do not go up to 75 hz my guy, let alone do most programs draw that fast outside of games. Hence proves my first point correct:
You will not see a difference unless you use a program that uses it. Most programs do not, so unless you game the entire time you use your computer, it's almost a waste.
Of course more than 60 FPS only makes sense when you have a monitor that supports more than 60 Hz, "my guy". Most programs do use it. Even moving a window around looks better on a higher refreshrate monitor, let alone any kind of gaming. It's definitely not a waste.
Those programs are far in between Tom, 60 is more than enough for most users. Hence why most monitors are sold with 60 (I've even seen 59.97) refresh rates. If you want a faster one, you need to pay more for a gaming monitor, which, once again, proves my original point correct. Outside of gaming, there is not much of use for 60+ refresh rates.
You haven't made a distinction between casual vs competitive gaming. While it is true that your grandmother would probably be fine with (even sub-)60 FPS, and while I don't personally need 144 FPS because I don't play many games other than Minecraft, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice, but I'm also not going to pay the extra premium for it.
My opinion on the matter is basically: get what you want! If you think that 60 FPS is fine? Go for it! If over 60 Hz is what you personally prefer, and you're able to get it? Get it! I don't think that people should be excluded from using what they want to use just because someone else believes that their choice is too slow or too fast.
"Want vs need". Most competitive gamers "need" a high refresh rate monitor, otherwise their performance will suffer (in most cases). Those who are not competitive gamers do not "need" a high refresh rate monitor, see my original parent post for my original claim before you and Tom joined.
There are legit only a few select instances where one would benefit from a monitor with a refresh rate quicker than 60hz, who is not a gamer, but they do not make up the majority of the public. If the average person had a high refresh rate monitor, as I said many times to you and Tom, they would see almost 0 difference unless they used a program that used those extra frames.
Yeah, you don't need it, but that's not the point he's trying to make. To quote him directly: "It just looks nicer", and that's how higher-refresh rates are in his eyes.
Yes Tom, you could "move windows" around on your OS quicker, but most people do not make that their basis for buying a $300 monitor with 420hz or whatever. Usually it's because they "need it" for something they use frequently, such as competitive gaming, or the other select few instances where one would actually benefit from a high refresh rate monitor.
"Looks nicer" is very subjective Waffee, as I just stated. You will see near 0 difference unless you actually "use" those frames. Of which most programs do not.
lol that's just not true. A higher refreshrate is already noticeable when moving windows and when scrolling. It's very noticeable when playing ANY game that can run above 60 FPS, which is most games, and not just competitive games. It will just look nicer at a hogher refreshrate, just like it will look nicer at a higher resolution.
High resolution monitors don't need to be that expensive. A good friend of me bought a new (!) 144 Hz monitor for just €200. He isn't a competitive gamer. He just plays for fun, and he bought a high refreshrate monitor to increase that enjoyment, which has definitely worked well.
When you're living under the effects of American capitalism, my laptop cost roughly €170 cause that was all I could afford! :D eBay in a non-working state with manual additions. :P
