The fall of the USSR was a very bad thing for about every in-USSR state.

It was a good thing for the world, no more arms race and no more US trying to stop the spread of communism, aka no more wars. Sadly the "no wars" thing didn't help, but I believe it could have been much worse if the USSR still existed and had a huge feud with the US

marxism is largely unrelated to the bad things done by the USSR

The thing about Marxism is that there is so many ways it can be done, I haven't done the most research but just the basic ideal of what communism is, is a turn off for me.

Funny, the ideal is very attractive to me.

    In practice it'll never work

As long as we require human labor to achieve productivity, it will never work.
However, in a Post-Scarcity Society, Marxism becomes the only viable solution.

Marxism is not communism. Communism is what happens when you take all the greed of capitalism and put it into Marxism.

Saying that I think the most successful close-ish implementation of it is Clement Attlee's 1945-1951 government. Worked extremely well until Winston Churchill abused the electoral system because he couldn't win an election without that, then the Conservatives messed it up and Margaret Milk-stealer Thatcher came along and destroyed it all.
