Yeah but I just need something that can run a web browser, Microsoft Word, and I've really wanted Garageband for a long time now.

Do note that Apple's Word is slightly different from Windows' Word (not sure by how much though). Also, you could download Garageband via a MacOS virtual machine. :)

Honestly forgot that virtual machines exist. The dealbreaker for me though is that say what you want about them but Apple products are a fantastic build quality. Whereas the laptop I've had since 2012 has been held together with glue, 3 keyboard replacements, and the screen no longer works, all as of 2015. Same with the previous laptop. I just need something to get me through uni without breaking apart :P

(don't worry I'm not trying to prevent you from buying something Apple, I'm just trying to help you with getting the best you possibly could :) ) That build quality is definitely true, but it also definitely wasn't for all MacBooks. I don't know before which generation it was, but there were some generations with relatively shoddy build quality, and durability issues.

Sucks you've had that experience. :/ I personally have a second hand (from someone who used it as a work laptop, I believe!) Dell Latitude E6420, and for anything that doesn't require a lot of power (such as what you're describing) it does the job really well. It is sturdy as heck, and as I've replaced the HDD with an SSD it is really quite snappy too. The RAM can be easily upgraded too if needed.

The battery is meh (2-3 hours ish), but it charges really quickly, so that's a plus. I can vouch for this laptop, as my mother AND my sister also have one. :P

The ironic thing is that I'll probably have to get a different laptop myself when I go to university this year, but that is more to do with that they seem to require a lot of power for the applications that I apparently need to be able to run, so ugh lol. Good thing is though that my university has some program thing that sells the laptops for like half price, so yay. :P

nah it's fine, I'm not completely sold on it so it's good to have an opposing opinion and the recommendation :P At the end of the day it comes down to what my budget will be at the end of July. So we shall see. The MacBook has 16GB RAM, an SSD (never had one before tbh), and it's £400. So, yeah we'll see, it's decently weighted against the alternatives :P

I'd think about getting a slightly newer one, the 2012 ones would really be getting towards the end of their guaranteed lifetime. But I think any from 2012 onwards are pretty good, and the 2017 ones onwards and great (apart maybe from the 2016/17 ones lol)

Also apple will give you an education discount on new ones. I got close to $600 off mine when I bought it.

That's decent but Apple does their thing through UniDays and I don't have my signup for that yet, don't know when I will either lol. Only does 10% off the £1,200 too. ugh

Ah 400 pounds, you're into a much more expensive territory than U first expected. :P I bought my Dell E6420 for like 150 euros a couple of years ago.
Definitely get something with an SSD (or something yiu can put an SSD in).

Look online to see if you can find anything on their build quality - Windows laptops have also improved massively, but there are still the shoddy ones out there, so be sure to grab something that is decent. :) Looks - whether it looks properly built or looks like a glossy plastic mess - often say half of the story. :P
