For the record: I have been playing some "modded Minecraft" as well as of late (singleplayer). But just as much as I've been playing vanilla+ (vanilla + optifine & resource pack).
Well, most of my friends and people who don't know anything about Minecraft approach it with the idea that it is a "simple game", also due to its somewhat blocky (simplistic?) looks. It wouldn't be the first time when I showed someone some of the stuff I do on my redstone world and they're pretty much speechless due to the complexity of some of the things going on.
