I tend not to use any armor. Is that weird? I tend to use stone tools too, except for a single iron pick when I'm mining in the deeps. I almost never die besides to creepers and lava, so maybe that's why. Once I get some levels and make a nice set of blast resist armor, maybe I'll change my mind about it.
It's not weird, but I know that my methods changed a bit as my goals changed. It certainly helps me to wear armor but I tend to get into close combat with monsters very frequently. Unfortunately I think most of my deaths are due to lava accidents though :/
I can definitely see the point of armor if you spend a lot of time at a wilds outpost. Just saving yourself from the trek alone would make it worthwhile.
