Please nerf iron farms

  1. I agree iron being cheap isn't such a bad thing, I believe there are enough exclusive things way harder to obtain to profit from. I don't have access to an iron farm, I was once given a few stacks but still, I find loads of it mining in search of diamonds so it wouldn't affect me much.

It's true too that seeing big iron buildings is not so impressive because of iron farms but hey... There are still many options to make your building look amazing.

I just don't think one material which is so common anyway can ruin the economy by itself.

  2. Minecraft is a sandbox game, there is a virtual world with it's rules. Mojang does not prescribe nor recommend how to play. The did not "add grinding" into the game, but the rules of the game allow for grinding.
Mojang does change this world and its rules, but as this is an external change, it is like weather / climate naturally changes IRL. We have to adapt and this is part of the fun, at least mostly. :)

There is no "right" or "correct" nor "wrong" nor more nor less "valuable" way to play Minecraft survival.
If someone has fun with building an iron farm and then using it (by staying afk) that's perfectly ok, same as digging like a manic miner. :)

Changes in supply and/or demand for an item or group of items happen because of many of different reasons and are normal. This does not nor it can "ruin the economy."

An economy is ruined when people are not able to exchange goods and services any more - when selling and/or buying goods and/or services becomes too cumbersome.
Changes in demand / supply / price of an item or group of items does not ruin the economy.

(The biggest threat to EMC economy is high inflation (through free rupees), there are several discussions from the past about that.)

Getting mob drops / items through grinding is in no way cheating, because it happens according to the rules of that virtual world.
Cheating is (e.g.) when items are created besides Minecraft rules, for example duplication due to bug/glitch or through some sort of /give command.

Staying afk at a farm is in no way cheating.
Getting free rupees and then going to the /shop ... well think yourself...

  3. Your right about the Non-Vanilla aspects of EMC. Like the ability to fly in Utopia town.

  4. As you can see, I requested the title be changed. I'd also like to remind you that I don't want them because of 1) such little effort in most cases and 2) the price going down - no, not because I own a store. Also, I said that it's "part of minecraft" in the OP, so no need to bring it up. Continue. :)
  5. So you should probably edit the OP a little, even the first sentence is contradictory to the title.

  6. this guy has a gold farm and sold me a ton of gold until he ran out. he then went to the nether(undetected on live map because of supporter status) and afked at a gold farm and got more again. if afk farms stay then i think at least people should share them with 2 or 3 people.
  7. as I said earlier in this thread, Iron farms specifically will not be banned.

The only thing that will possibly change is the AFK rules.
Long as your 'playing' while using your farm, then all is great!

Mine a cobble/obsidian gen, brew some potions, chat with friends, strip mine (well in a small enough area to activate pods still), do some smelting, build something!

plenty of things to do around your center point while the golems are dying :)
  8. Alex, I am completely in favor of this. Even though I KNOW it won't happen, (See post right above this) I would really love it if this happens. I think there should be something added to make these more restricted.
  9. It is extremely unlikely that that will happen. It would create chaos for the mods.
  10. Where / what is the problem in constructing an apparatus to get something with less effort?

Where / what is the problem when some item becomes obtainable with less effort and its price going down?
  11. Don't wanna see iron ores being worth more then ingots.

To my knowledge, a lot of people that get all these dc's of iron didn't build the farms themselves.
  12. Has this happened? I've been getting kicked from Utopia for AFKin'g on my res today.

  13. This is actually kind of frustrating, considering we now have to stand on top of our crops, animals, etc to get them to work. You create more reasons to have to afk near something - then make it harder to afk. I see nothing at all wrong with AFK ing as long as the player cap has not been hit. I know many who share this philosophy with me.
  14. Don't buy or sell iron then.

Dwight5273 built me a beautiful iron farm. It is small, only 1 tower. It is deep in the wild and suits my needs for iron. I wont be trucking it into the town to sell it. Why are you trying to take that away from me?
  15. If you built [any mob type] farm, and someone else AFK'd there for 14 hours straight, how would you feel? It is my personal belief that any AFK farming >10/15 minutes is excessive. And by that, I mean straight time. If another user comes to ask to use the farm, and there is no reply for hours, then I (again, personally) consider that disrespectful.

As for the Entity Activation Range, 1 1/2 chunks distance is pretty much your entire residence. If you are at the absolute corner of your residence, that is still 1/4 of your plot that can be farmed. I'm not sure how far you expect to travel...

  16. I share my iron farm with several people. We don't seem to have this as a problem. Perhaps you should share your farms with less rude people, if you are having this problem.

Edit: And not just iron farms.. skele, zombie, anything you can think of - we have all shared at one point or another. There have been little to no problems. So why are you guys trying to create one?
  17. Well, Mojang didn't add grinders into the game, the players found out how to make them, so its really our fault for it.
  18. I think you misinterpreted my question. If someone who you did not know were to stumble upon your grinder, and use it for 14 hours straight, would you have a problem with it? Despite what you may believe, this situation occurs quite often.

Also, I do not understand what you mean by "trying to create a problem"?

  19. I meant that with several people using a grinder - we have no problems. However, if you guys make it harder for us to use the grinder. Having to constantly be paying attention to it. There very well could become time issues for their use.

If we had a stranger stumble upon a grinder - and we have before. Although mostly just to steal or grief. No one has claimed use. We would talk to the player - invite him to share it with us following the same code of conduct we all apply in our share of the machines. If the player declined to be obliging we already have plans of action in place that we deconstruct our grinders and move them to a new location.

  20. TBH. I don't play survival, just economy.

I guess putting villagers to not breed with time could cause iron to drop as making the farms would be more difficult but the farms already made are still many so won't change much.

Nerfing iron farms sounds nice. If they don't get nerfed I don't care either way, I don't use iron at all besides buckets nor have a shop. I'll wait till they're at 10 ingots per rupee and build a castle.

    Keep on Iron farming!
