Hey all Just wanted to make a small post on how to keep your forums account more secure. Check out this wiki page to learn how to activate Two-Factor Authentication on your account. No matter how long you've been on EMC, or how popular you are, I highly suggest activating 2FA if you haven't already done so. Also, remember to use good password practices, such as: Instead of a bunch of numbers and characters, use a long phrase that is easy to remember. Example: Instead of making your password something such as "Un1c0rnzR4Le", try making it more like "turtle curtain wardrobes carpet". Easier for you to remember, so you won't have to write it down, but it's also harder for a computer to crack. NEVER share your password!!!!! Just don't do it! Use different passwords for different sites. If somebody knows your password for one website, you don't want them to also know your password on every other site. Have any questions or more tips? I was feeling guilty for commenting here and thought I should probably pm you, but then I read the 'or comment down below', so here I am anyway. I wonder why? Two-factor authentication makes things slower. Why would you want that, if your account is already protected with a password? Also, I understand that you need to resend a code every 31 days and when you have used a third device. 31 days is fairly long, but I use 3 devices frequently (laptop, tablet, desktop).
So, say somebody is trying to hack into your account. All they have to do is enter in your username and password, and then they gain access. In some cases, passwords can be easily cracked by programs. However, if you have Two-Factor Authentication, a person trying to gain unwanted access to your account will be met with another obstacle: an extra code that they are required to enter. This code is random and changes frequently, making it much more difficult to get correct. Also, this code is accessed through your personal devices, and it is unlikely that the person trying to access your account will have those.
